A serial airline stowaway who has been arrested at California airports six times has finally managed to fly without a ticket. Marilyn Jean Hartman, 62, who is a well-known plane-hopper, sneaked past a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint at Mineta San Jose International Airport on Monday night and boarded a Southwest Airlines flight to Los Angeles. She was only caught after the plane landed at Los Angeles International Airport and the crew counted the passengers who remained on board for the final destination to Phoenix. Hartman was hauled off the plane and charged with trespassing by the Los Angeles Police Department. Hartman´s antics - which

The “Hard Choices” book tour drags on. Last night, author and former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton walked onto the set of “The Colbert Report.” In what was presented as a surprise visit, she appeared just as Colbert was fake-denouncing various passages of “Hard Choices.” “This book is 656 pages of shameless name-dropping,” ripped the host, highlighting a sentence in which Clinton talks about hanging out with Tanzanian Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda. After highlighting other such moments in the book, Colbert asked, “There is no way on earth one woman can be in so many places at once.” At

Media bias in the Christie

If you are going to have a scandal, it really, really helps to be a Democrat if you are worried about media coverage. Consider the cases of neighboring big state governors Chris Christie and Andrew Cuomo. Christie’s “Bridgegate” scandal was a tale of political revenge involving the placement of orange traffic cones. Cuomo’s “Morelandgate” scandal is about a governor shutting down an investigation into political corruption (by the Moreland Commission) when it started getting close to home. Let’s see: which is worse: snarling traffic or covering up potential corruption? From the media response, you’d think traffic cones are vastly more

The irony is thick with this one. A government audit has found that a website dedicated to making federal spending "more transparent" can´t find $619 billion. USA Today: And the data that does exist is wildly inaccurate, according to the Government Accountability Office, which looked at 2012 spending data. Only 2% to 7% of spending data on USASpending.gov is "fully consistent with agencies´ records," according to the report. Among the data missing from the 6-year-old federal website: The Department of Health and Human Services failed to report nearly $544 billion, mostly in direct assistance programs like Medicare. Saturday, August 9 marks the fortieth anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s resignation over the scandal known as Watergate. It’s hard to believe but 40 years after Nixon’s resignation the American public still does not know who ordered the Watergate break-in, what the burglars were looking for and why they did it. The mainstream media narrative about Watergate is a grotesque and fantastic distortion of historical fact. No one has sought to control this narrative more than former White House Counsel John Dean. Through his books, interviews, paid speeches, lawsuits and litigation Dean has spun the myth that he was a naïve and

About a month after asking states for help finding temporary shelter for undocumented child migrants—sparking much handwringing over the issue—the federal government now says it no longer needs the help. In a Tuesday afternoon letter, a federal Health and Human Services official thanked Massachusetts for its offer of assistance, writing that “HHS is no longer seeking facilities for temporary shelters for unaccompanied children at this time,” due to a decline in the number of unaccompanied children apprehended by and in the custody of Customs and Border Protection. “Thank you for your offer of two Massachusetts facilities to assist with the humanitarian response

A second American infected with the potentially deadly Ebola virus arrived at Emory University Hospital on Tuesday from Africa, following the first patient last weekend. Both were greeted by a team of highly trained physicians and nurses, a specialized isolation unit, extensive media coverage, and a storm of public reaction. People responded viscerally on social media, fearing that we risked spreading Ebola to the United States. Those fears are unfounded and reflect a lack of knowledge about Ebola and our ability to safely manage and contain it. Emory University Hospital has a unit created specifically for these types of highly

HOUSTON, Texas -- Despite claims that the number of apprehended unaccompanied alien children (UAC) has recently declined along the Texas-Mexico border, a shocking estimate from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) states that in Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 more than 127,000 foreign minors will attempt to illegally enter the country. That is more than double the number of UAC who will to cross the border this year. DHS´ projection for next year is more than 20 times greater than the number of UAC who entered the U.S. illegally in 2011, which was 6,600. A DHS 2015 appropriations bill said, "Over the

We’re now witnessing the worst Ebola epidemic ever — and on your list of worries it belongs .?.?. nowhere. Here’s a rule of thumb about diseases: The rarer and less likely they are to kill you, the more hype they get. The New York Times ran more than 2,000 articles on SARS, which ultimately killed zero Americans. This is only the deadliest outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease because past ones were so tiny. At this writing, there have been 1,603 reported cases in Africa and 887 deaths. That’s too many. But every day about 600 sub-Saharan Africans die of tuberculosis, and contagious diarrhea

Attorney General Eric Holder argues in a new interview that activism is the proper role of the nation’s chief law enforcement officer — and it is precisely this radical conceit that by itself ought to disqualify him from holding the office. “If you want to call me an activist attorney general, I will proudly accept that label,” he told left-wing journalist Juan Williams. “Any attorney general who is not an activist is not doing his or her job,” Holder pontificated, skating over the long-recognized fact that an attorney general is supposed to enforce the law, not fundamentally transform the nation.

If you like your Obamacare plan, you can keep it—but you might end up paying a whole lot more. People who decide to stick with the coverage they´ve already gotten through Obamacare, rather than switching plans, are at risk for some of the biggest premium spikes anywhere in the system. And some people won´t even know their costs went up until they get a bill from the IRS. Insurance plans generally raise their premiums every year, but those costs are just the tip of the iceberg for millions of Obamacare enrollees. A series of other, largely invisible factors will

Not an outlandish question. The water main that broke near UCLA last week was ninety years old, which isn’t unusual here in the City of Angels. The only things more common than fault lines running under this city are ancient water pipes. It’s a situation that even the mayor admits isn’t going to get better soon. As is typical with bureaucracies, the problem is blamed on a lack of money. As is also typical with bureaucracies, it is really more a problem of prioritization and budgeting than available funds. The Islamic State organization is continuing to make gains on both the Syrian and Iraqi fronts. The advance and consolidation of the jihadi entity which today stretches from Mosul in Iraq to the outskirts of Aleppo city in Syria is a development of profound importance for the future of the Middle East. Global media attention has been focused elsewhere in recent weeks, of course. The Gaza war — which has changed precisely nothing — has been hitting the headlines. The real Middle East action, however, is taking place far from Gaza. The Islamic State is on the march. After its capture of
