In February 2013, Move America Forward announced an ambitious fundraising goal. The charity, launched in part by one of the most prominent figures in the Tea Party movement, had adopted the 800 Marines in a battalion fighting in Afghanistan and wanted to send them all care packages. “For some troops, these care packages are the only mail they will receive all year,” the group said in one email solicitation. The charity later described the fundraising drive as a rousing success: In less than five weeks, all 800 Marines in a 1st Marine Division battalion nicknamed Geronimo were sent care packages and notes

NDTV shot this video over the last two days, but didn’t publish it until after their reporters left for … well, the obvious reasons. Note the time of the rocket fire, too — 7:50 am, just ten minutes before the cease-fire began today. Could these have been the missiles that hit the West Bank? (Snip for video) It began with a mysterious tent with a blue canopy that bobbed up yesterday (August 4) at 6:30 am in an open patch of land next to our window. Rep. Michele Bachmann has suggested the federal government levy a 100 percent tax on money illegal immigrants send back to their home countries as a way of remedying the border crisis. In addition to building a secure, well-lit, fully staffed border fence, the Minnesota Republican said there should be “a 100 percent tax on remittances, the money that illegal aliens send back to these countries.” “Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, those countries are laughing at us because they’re making money with their corrupt governments in conjunction with these international criminal cartels, they’re all making money and

This is really not the biggest deal in the world, but every year on August 4, I’m reminded of something kind of creepy in the Cult of Obama. That, my friends, is the obsession with his birthday. I totally get that if you run a monarchy or are a dictator or if you’re a good president, your birthday might be cause for celebration. Oh, it’s the Queen’s birthday? Let’s celebrate. Oh, we’re going to be killed if we don’t pay honor to you, Kim Jong Un (not to be confused with his father who held the titles of “Dear Leader, who

President Obama apparently has dug himself so deep into the black hole called White House public relations that the media world sat up in shock when he told reporters at a press conference: “I’ll take a question,” he said. In fact, he took not just one but two questions from reporters during press conferences last week, Politico reported. The White House is being seen as shifting strategy on its communications, hoping to draw Mr. Obama back to where he’s perceived to shine best — speaking to and in front of the public, Politico reported. The idea is to reverse the president’s poll numbers, which have been faltering in recent months,

ISIL takes control of Iraq’s

Sunni radicals with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claim to have taken control of Iraq’s largest hydroelectric dam. The Mosul Dam, which sits on the Tigris River, could cause damage as far as 280 miles away if ISIL decides to use it as a weapon, experts say. “It’s a horrendous prospect,” Daniel Pipes, the president of the Middle East Forum, told CNN. “If you control the Mosul Dam, you can threaten just about everybody.” Another fear is that the dam could break simply due to ISIL’s ignorance of the structure. Business Insider reported Tuesday that the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers believes the dam is “inherently unstable,”

Outrage in Saudi Arabia at

The unprecedented appearance of a female newsreader on Saudi state television without a headscarf has caused a scandal in the deeply conservative Islamic state. The unnamed anchor, who has previously worn a hijab in clips circulated online, was reading a bulletin from London for the Al Ekhbariya channel. Strict Islamic dress codes in Saudi Arabia require women to dress “modestly” – usually with headscarves, veils and full-length abayas. While women do sometimes appear without head coverings in programmes broadcast by state-controlled channels, newsreaders are never seen without the hijab.

The federal government will close three interim shelters set up on US military bases to house migrant children apprehended while crossing the border, according to media reports. Beginning this week, the US Department of Health and Human Services will shutter emergency shelters in California, Texas, and Oklahoma, The New York Times and Los Angeles Times reported Monday. “We are able to take this step because we have proactively expanded capacity to care for children in standard shelters, which are significantly less costly facilities. Border Surge: The open-border lobby´s argument that the illegals pouring in are just refugees from violence is crumbling. A CBP paper shows border crossers are rolling in from 75 nations. Economics, not gangs, is driving them. Justifying the Central American surge on our unguarded border as a flight from intolerable homeland violence, the political left has attempted to paint this year´s 240,000-person influx of illegal aliens into the U.S. as a matter of refugees — and anyone who opposes the human flood tide as heartless. Their pictures of women and toddlers tug on the heartstrings. It´s rubbish. The border surge is mainly

In postmodern wars, we are told, there is no victory, no defeat, no aggressors, no defenders, just a tragedy of conflicting agendas. But in such a mindless and amoral landscape, Israel in fact is on its way to emerging in a far better position after the Gaza war than before. Analysts of the current fighting in Gaza have assured us that even if Israel weakens Hamas, such a short-term victory will hardly lead to long-term strategic success — but they don’t define “long-term.” In this line of thinking, supposedly in a few weeks Israel will only find itself more isolated than

And as hard as it is to accept for pro-illegal immigration advocates, a chaotic, completely unregulated immigration system hurts illegal immigrants as well as American citizens. And there’s no doubt that the system is broken and chaotic. These stats make that very clear: According to the Department of Homeland Security’s last report on the number of illegal immigrants residing in the US, there are an estimated 11.5

Even in death, you can’t escape the property bubble. From New York to London, growing populations are competing with the deceased for land, driving up real-estate costs well into the afterlife. In Asian megacities, where cremation is the norm, even space for urns is in short supply. “At the end of the day, it’s like any other piece of real estate,” says Amy Cunningham, a New York state licensed funeral director. “Prices have conspired to put burials out of the range of most people’s budgets.” Every week, about 1,000 New Yorkers die. Manhattan is running out of room for them.

CIA director John Brennan did the right thing Thursday in apologizing to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) for CIA monitoring of computers being used by the committee’s staff for an investigation of the Bush-era enhanced-interrogation program. Nevertheless, heads must roll at the CIA over this scandal, including Brennan’s. While what the CIA did was not illegal, its actions were the result of reckless decisions by agency officials in response to misconduct by SSCI staff members. The CIA should have handled this matter by raising it quietly with SSCI chairwoman Dianne Feinstein.
