(Live blog) 23:02 - Palestinian officials confirm truce at 8 a.m.: The Palestinian delegation to Cairo — which includes representatives of Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other factions — tells Egypt this evening that it accepts its offer for a 72-hour truce, beginning at 8 a.m. tomorrow, senior officials in the delegation tell The Times of Israel. The officials say the Egyptians have made it clear that Israel has agreed to the offer in principal. They note that the agreement began as a request for a 24-hour truce to allow the head of the Red Cross to visit the Strip, and was then expanded to 72 hours, with the option of a further extension.

Crying "Ceasefire" in a

It has been encouraging, even inspiring, to read and hear the loud and angry response in Israel — condemnatory across the board, from right to left — to the ludicrous ceasefire proposals that were floated this past week by John Kerry, United States Secretary of State, partly on his own and partly in consultation with two of the world’s most notorious generators of Israel-hate: Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey and the leadership of Qatar. Erdogan had just accused Israel of barbarism worse than Hitler, and Qatar underwrites terrorism and murder all over the world, perhaps more than does any other financial center including Iran.

The New York Times makes history

The Sunday pages of The New York Times ran a historical first for the long-running newspaper — a full-page advertisement for marijuana that wasn’t placed by an issue advocacy group. Rather, the ad came from the Leafly, a website and mobile phone app organization that simply rates marijuana dispensaries, Newsmax reported. “While we have run ads from marijuana advocacy organizations in the past, such as NORML [the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws], this may be the first non-advocacy ad that has run,” one newspaper spokesman told AdWeek. “But since we do not track advertisements by subject,

Sen. Chuck Schumer said the federal government needs to hurry up and issue guidelines to stop drones from spying on innocent Americans. “New York City is the Wild West of drones,” the New York Democrat said, the New York Daily News reported. “The FAA plain and simple needs to stop dragging its feet.” Mr. Schumer said both the Federal Aviation Administration and the Commerce Department are supposed to have privacy flight rules for drones in ink before the end of the year — but that agency officials are moving too slow to keep pace with the rapidly emerging technology. He said he specifically wants guidelines that prohibit drone

The military campaign in Gaza is continuing, and the only element coming to a conclusion right now is the action against the tunnels, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Monday. “The campaign will end only when quiet and security for a prolonged period of time is restored to Israeli citizens” he said, following security deliberations with Defense Minister Moshe Ya´alon and Chief of Gen Staff Lt.-Gen Benny Gantz at IDF Southern Command headquarters. Netanyahu, in his comments, made no mention of reports that US Secretary of State John Kerry was trying to broker another 72-hour cease fire. The last one he brokered,

WASHINGTON — After what was arguably his worst week since becoming the nation’s top diplomat, Secretary of State John Kerry has been conspicuously absent. The conflict in Gaza rages on, fresh off the violent collapse of a short-term cease-fire. I expected Kerry to be everywhere: making on-camera appearances, hitting the Sunday talk show circuit to detail U.S. efforts to try to bring at least a temporary stop to the violence in the region. But Kerry — rarely camera-shy — couldn’t be found. The job was left to President Obama himself and other White House officials. There were scheduling issues, of

Mitt Romney is again teaming up with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. The 2012 GOP presidential nominee will join Mr. Christie for a fundraiser next month to benefit the New Jersey Republican Party, CNN reported. The Sept. 10 event in East Brunswick, New Jersey, is billed as a birthday party for Mr. Christie, who turns 52 next month, with Mr. Romney listed as a “special guest” on the invitations. Mr. Christie was a top surrogate for Mr. Romney during the 2012 presidential race, regularly leading rallies for the former Massachusetts governor. This time it’s Mr. Christie who is eyeing a White House run in 2016.

TEHRAN, Iran — Hamas is able to fire missiles into Israel because Tehran provided weapons technology to the militant group to defend itself against Israeli attacks, a senior Iranian official said Monday. The Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council, Mohsen Rezaei, was quoted by Al-Alam, the Arabic channel of Iran´s state TV, as also saying Hamas should also dig tunnels to be used as shelter to protect Gaza´s population from Israeli assaults. "Palestinian resistance missiles are the blessings of Iran´s transfer of technology. We need to transfer defensive and military technology to Palestinians so that they can build weapons under

Whoopi Goldberg on ABC’s The View Monday took aim at Donald Trump for tweets he put out recently that objected to Ebola-infected Americans returning to the U.S. Repeatedly referring to Trump as “a friend,” Goldberg said Trump’s tweets were “dopey,” “idiotic” and “stupid.” She rightly noted that Ebola is not transmissible through the air, but only exchanging bodily fluids. “Do your homework, Donald. Just do your homework. … Before you say something that dumb– you know better than that. The White House’s emerging strategy for the midterm elections is to run against a “mean” Congress. President Obama has made that tack known more than ever in recent days. In the last week, he’s accused Republicans of getting into disagreements with themselves over the border supplemental funding and for not being able to pass “plain vanilla” legislation. He asked them to “stop hating” and “being mad all the time.” And he mocked House Republicans for suing him and added, “And I said to Speaker Boehner, tell your caucus the best way to avoid me acting on my own is work with me

After calling for President Barack Obama´s impeachment on the pages of Breitbart News for his lawlessness on illegal immigration, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said that more Americans, many of whom have been led to believe by politicians and the media that only criminal offenses are impeachable, would be in favor of it once they found out what impeachable offenses actually are. The United States and most other industrialized countries have experienced a rapid increase in inequality since around the 1970s. Unsurprisingly, the discussion of inequality has become politicized. Some deny the increase in inequality entirely, in spite of overwhelming evidence. Others exaggerate the magnitude of inequality, for example by claiming that all income gains have gone to the rich. The estimates of income distribution by the Congressional Budget Office avoids several common methodological problems. The CBO adjusts for declining household size and uses a broader definition of income that includes pension and health care contributions by employers. Between 1979 and 2010

In a desperate effort to keep the global warming hoax alive even though it is now called “climate change”, the meteorologically challenged print and broadcast media is now declaring all weather “extreme” these days. The Media Research Institute recently analyzed broadcast network transcripts between July 1, 2004 and July 1, 2005, along with those between July 1, 2013 and July 1, 2014. What it discovered was the network coverage of “extreme weather” had increased nearly one thousand percent! As Sean Long reported, “during that time, extreme weather was frequently used by the networks to describe heat waves, droughts, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter

Moral courage is the ability to act rightly, in accordance with our values, in spite of popular opposition, threats of shame and scandal, or discouragement from expected backlash. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “Be with a leader when he is right, stay with him when he is still right, but, leave him when he is wrong.” For the most part, America has been silent on calling out Barack Obama, or even their own representatives, for gross ineptness and an unwillingness to follow the will of the American people. In Washington, D.C., our so-called leaders have arrogantly decided it’s their way, and their way only, occasionally telling us their actions are in

School bake sales haven’t been banned as some recent headlines have suggested. Nor does little Johnny have to bring carrot sticks instead of cupcakes to share with classmates on his birthday. New rules requiring healthier foods in public schools took effect July 1 as a result of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act passed in 2010.

"Ants are changing the environment," said lead study author Ronald Dorn, from the Arizona State University in Tempe. Certain ant species "weather" minerals in order to secrete calcium carbonate — better known as limestone. The process traps and removes a tiny bit of carbon dioxide gas from the atmosphere, Dorn said. This ant limestone factory is a small-scale version of the massive
