Barack Obama to reporters:
´I´ll take a question´

President Barack Obama had just done the unthinkable. He took questions last week from the White House press corps — not just once, but twice. He didn’t call only on the reporters who were selected ahead of time by his senior aides. He even stuck around longer than he wanted at a briefing Friday to appease the room of shouting correspondents. “Hold on, guys. Come on. You’re not that pent up,” Obama joked. “I’ve been giving you questions lately.” This never used to happen in the Obama White House, a place so obsessed with message control that the president could go

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands - A newly formed Hurricane Bertha swirled northward across open sea Monday after brushing the Turks & Caicos Islands and Bahamas as a tropical storm, while forecasters predicted the storm wasn´t likely to make landfall on the U.S. East Coast. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the second hurricane of the Atlantic season also was likely to miss Bermuda while beginning to curve north-northeastward. The current forecast map predicts that the center of the storm will stay offshore as it passes wide of the U.S. East Coast, though it´s hard to precisely gauge

The University of Arkansas library has backed down from its decision to block the Washington Free Beacon from accessing its special collections archives following a month-long public uproar. The library suspended the Free Beacon’s research privileges in June after the outlet published a story based on audiotapes from university archives that included Hillary Clinton discussing her 1975 defense of a child rapist. Library officials said the Free Beacon had violated the university’s intellectual property rights by publishing the excerpts without submitting a permission-to-publish form. However, the library later acknowledged it did not

TOLEDO, Ohio— A water ban that had hundreds of thousands of people in Ohio and Michigan scrambling for drinking water has been lifted, Toledo´s mayor announced Monday. Mayor D. Michael Collins called the drinking water safe and lifted the ban at a Monday morning news conference. "Our water is safe," Collins said. "Families can return to normal life." Ohio´s fourth-largest city warned residents not to use city water early Saturday after tests at one treatment plant showed readings for microcystin above the standard for consumption, most likely from algae on Lake Erie. Ohio Gov. John Kasich declared a state of

The total federal debt of the U.S. government has now increased more than $7 trillion during the slightly more than five and a half years Barack Obama has been president. That is more than the debt increased under all U.S. presidents from George Washington through Bill Clinton combined, and it is more debt than was accumulated in the first 227 years of this nation´s existence--from 1776 through 2003. The total federal debt first passed the $7-trillion mark on Jan. 15, 2004, after President George W. Bush had been in office almost three years. When President Obama took office on Jan.

It is really unfortunate that, when they were being marched to the gas chambers, the Jewish victims of Nazi aggression did not contemplate the effect their deaths would have on the German death-camp guards. Certainly, they are guilty of not having found some way to protect the Nazis from the psychological consequences of being compelled to murder large numbers of human beings. Sound absurd? That is the pristine logic of the UN’s High Commissioner on Human Rights, Navi Pillay, whose term just expired. Her swan song was to accuse both Israel and the United States of human rights violations for

Here’s a wacky idea. Let’s win the war against our jihadi enemies. Yeah, it’s certainly an outside the box idea. All we hear right now – in fact, all we’ve heard for decades – is about peace processes and negotiations and ceasefires. On and on they go, one after another, always crashing on the rocks of intransigence by people who hate our allies and who hate us. Maybe we need some fresh new ideas, some outside-the-box thinking. How about we and our allies destroy our enemies? After all, the best peace plan is victory. Wait, hear me out. You know,

No shortage of dumb, offensive stuff has been written lately about Israel and Palestine, some of it in so-called respectable newspapers, some of it in blogs, some of it on social media. For example, The Times of Israel this week published piece entitled “When Genocide is permissible”. You’d think that sort of headline would be unthinkable under any circumstances. You’d think it’d be twice as unthinkable in Israel, where Jews comprise 75 per cent of the population. European Jews, remember, were themselves the victims of the Nazis’ attempt at genocide in the 1940s. The piece has since been pulled but the moral damage has been done.

Three top secret, experimental vials stored at subzero temperatures were flown into Liberia last week in a last-ditch effort to save two American missionary workers who had contracted Ebola, according to a source familiar with details of the treatment. On July 22, Dr. Kent Brantly woke up feeling feverish. Fearing the worst, Brantly immediately isolated himself. Nancy Writebol´s symptoms started three days later. A rapid field blood test confirmed the infection in both of them after they had become ill with fever, vomiting and diarrhea. The lofty motto of the Environmental Protection Agency is "protecting people and the environment." In practice, however, EPA bureaucrats faithfully protect their own people and preserve the government´s cesspool of manipulation, cover-ups and cronyism. Just last week, Mark Levin and his vigilant Landmark Legal Foundation went to court to ask federal district judge Royce Lamberth to sanction the EPA "for destroying or failing to preserve emails and text messages that may have helped document suspected agency efforts to influence the 2012 presidential election." The motion is part of a larger Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

PHOENIX — On her 71st workday in the basement, Paula Pedene had something fun to look forward to. She had an errand to run, up on the first floor. “Today, I get to go get the papers. Exciting!” she said. “I get to go upstairs and, you know, see people.” The task itself was no thrill: Retrieve the morning’s newspapers and bring them back to the library of the Phoenix Veterans Affairs hospital. The pleasure was in the journey. Down a long, sunlit hallway. Back again, seeing friends in the bustle of the hospital’s main floor. Then, Pedene got back

Meet the lucky man who survived Ebola — the deadly disease doctors fear could be a worldwide killer. Saa Sabas contracted the virus — which has claimed more than 800 lives this year across three countries — while caring for his sick father. The father-of-two’s body temperature soared close to 40 degrees. Aside from the fever, other symptoms included diarrhoea and vomiting. Fortunately the disease was caught early and the pharmacy worker from southern Guinea in West Africa has joined only a small handful of people to survive. Democratic lawmakers left for their summer recess this weekend worried about the midterm elections and despondent over President Barack Obama. Congressional Republicans were torn asunder by internecine warfare, but there also was palpable anxiety among Democrats. Based on conversations with a dozen top Democrats, mostly members, here´s what they might write in a private letter to Obama: Dear Mr. President, We write this in a constructive spirit, knowing you´ve been dealt a difficult hand in foreign policy and face legislative gridlock at home. Yet without significant changes, the next three months could be perilous for you and our party. First, erase the F-word --

The great fear among conservatives, stoked by the actual statements of the Obama White House and one of its chief sycophants, Congress Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, is that the president will step far beyond the constitutional limits of his power and grant amnesty through executive fiat to as many as six million illegal aliens. This would be political suicide for Obama. It would be an act of brazen stupidity and it would likely not only destroy any chance his party has to retain control of the Senate but could potentially fracture his own coalition for future elections. Already Obama polls at

Bill de Blasio became mayor with a vow to enact New York City´s most liberal agenda in a generation, and he´s delivered on several signature campaign pledges. But periodic shifts toward the political center have angered and disappointed some of his core supporters. The rift came into sharp relief Thursday at City Hall as the mayor hosted the Rev. Al Sharpton and black clergy leaders in a summit prompted by the death of Eric Garner after a police officer put him in a banned chokehold. Outside in the plaza, protesters chanting "N-Y-P-D, keep your hands off of me!" ripped into the "broken

Hamas has been disseminating to its followers in the Gaza Strip a detailed terrorism training manual that teaches would-be bombers how to make explosives and conceal them in household items such as televisions, according to documents seized by the Israeli military during recent raids. Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers discovered the handbook on the ground in the Gaza Strip as they conducted raids of homes and other facilities used by Hamas to plan its terror activities. Hamas’ terrorism manuals instruct readers on how to build homemade explosive devices and how to set them to explode in unlikely places. Hamas has even strapped explosives

MOUNT BALDY, Calif. — About 2,500 people were stranded after thunderstorms caused mountain mudslides in Southern California, while one person was found dead in a flooded creek, authorities said. A body was found Sunday in a car that was swept into the rain-swollen water course in Mount Baldy and overturned, San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Chris Prater said. No other details were provided. Further east, flash floods Sunday brought thick debris flows that cut off access to two towns. About 1,500 residents of Oak Glen, and another 1,000 residents of Forest Falls in the San Bernardino Mountains were unable to get out

American University Professor Hillary Mann Leverett told MSNBC´s Melissa Harris-Perry that there is no history of anti-Semitism in the Middle East, no "deep-seated animosity," at least when compared to 1940s Europe. In the segment, Harris-Perry seemed troubled over the idea that the conflict between Israel and Palestine is "ancient" and "visceral." If only she could grasp that this conflict is "relatively recent," then she would be more "optimistic" about the future. Luckily for Harris-Perry, Professor Leverett was there to guide her with this "well informed" commentary: If you look at Jewish communities in other places around the Middle East, there

Business interests are vowing to fight President Obama’s executive order imposing new restrictions on companies who want to do business with the federal government. Obama announced the action this week, ordering up new regulations that would require firms seeking federal contracts to disclose labor law violations and create new compliance advisors at agencies to oversee decisions about which firms get the work. But contractors, already facing executive orders requiring them to pay a higher minimum wage and subjecting them to additional anti-discrimination rules, say the president went too far. “We are concerned these sweeping changes threaten the due process rights of federal contractors

The IDF has destroyed Hamas’s flagship terrorism project: its network of tunnels that snuck into Israel. Hamas spent five years preparing this strategic threat; the IDF wrecked 31 tunnels in two weeks. By Sunday, all of the tunnels that the IDF discovered during the offensive, or knew about before the war, will be destroyed. It is assumed that there are a few tunnels that the army has yet to identify. Many of the underground passages were designed to send heavily armed murder squads into Israeli communities and to attack army positions from the rear. They were filled with weapons, explosives and
