Ted Cruz hits Iowa right after

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz bagged three pheasants on a hunt with U.S. Rep. Steve King in northwest Iowa back in October. "I was laughing," the Texas senator said in a sit-down interview with The Des Moines Register, "because every time anyone shot a bird, everyone would call out, ´Good shot, senator.´ I told Steve, ´This is the only hunt I´ve ever been on where I got credited for more birds than I had shells.´" As Cruz touched down in the presidential testing grounds of Iowa again today, he was yet again a hot topic on the national stage. Following statements from Representative Steve King (R-IA) that President Barack Obama was creating a “constitutional crisis” with his executive actions on immigration that would ultimately leave the House with no choice but impeachment, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace asked Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) how the GOP’s impeachment chatter was different than bills filed by the Democrats to impeach George W Bush. “It’s completely different,” Jeffries said. “Then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) clearly said impeachment is off the table.” “Basically that’s what [House Speaker] John Boehner (R-OH) said this week, too,” Wallace said.

Procedural changes impede the chamber’s traditional deliberative function Americans hold the Senate in low esteem, but the situation is even worse than most understand. The Senate is dysfunctional today because its current leadership has acted to destroy the institution itself. Job-approval ratings for Congress have been in the teens or single digits for more than three years. A poll last year found that Congress is less popular than head lice, root canals and traffic jams. The “good” news is that Congress is slightly more popular than playground bullies, telemarketers and North Korea.

Gov. Rick Perry of Texas recently ordered 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to the state’s border with Mexico to assist the Border Patrol in responding to the growing crisis of illegal entry.[SNIP]The only problem is that Perry’s deployment order is symbolic, not serious, and it won’t do any good until it becomes serious. It is unlikely that Perry is any more likely than any other politician to put his own personal interest second, and the needs of the nation first, but the fact of the matter is we don’t need 1,000 troops on the border, we need 10,000, maybe more.

When he left Guatemala, 16-year-old Jonas Cua thought the professional smugglers his family had hired would get him across the border and on a van to his uncle in Hudson County. But he soon learned otherwise. The smugglers, known as coyotes, told him and the other teens and children traveling with him that when they reached the United States they would be left for U.S. immigration officials to find. And sure enough, his trip was cut short in Texas, where he was detained by Border Patrol agents. (Snip) On Friday, Cua reached his uncle, who lives in Hudson County,

A few days ago, I visited Kansas City to say a few words about our economy and meet with folks who wrote me letters -- and I snuck in some good barbeque, too. On Friday, we learned that our economy added about 200,000 jobs in July. Our private sector has added 9.9 million jobs over the last 53 months, the longest streak of private-sector job creation in our country’s history. Companies are investing. Consumers are spending. And for the first time in more than a decade, business leaders around the world have declared that the world’s number one place to invest

BAGHDAD - Islamic State fighters seized control of Iraq´s biggest dam, an oilfield and three more towns on Sunday after inflicting their first major defeat on Kurdish forces since sweeping through the region in June. Capture of the Mosul Dam after an offensive of barely 24 hours could give the Sunni militants the ability to flood major Iraqi cities, sharply raising the stakes in their bid to topple Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki´s Shi´ite-led government. Islamic State, which sees Iraq´s majority Shi´ites as apostates who deserve to be killed, also seized the Ain Zalah oil field, adding to four others already under

BAGHDAD — Police cars have been repainted to say "Islamic police." Women are forbidden from wearing bright colors and prints. The homes of Shiites and others have signs stating they are property of the Islamic State. And everyone walks in fear amid a new reign of terror. That´s what life is like in Mosul, Tikrit and other cities in northern and western Iraq under the control of Islamic extremists after their lightning-fast military campaign that overwhelmed the Iraqi army in June. The new normal for these residents means daily decrees about attire and raids to root out religious minorities in

SPIEGEL has learned from reliable sources that Israeli intelligence eavesdropped on US Secretary of State John Kerry during Middle East peace negotiations. In addition to the Israelis, at least one other intelligence service also listened in as Kerry mediated last year between Israel, the Palestinians and the Arab states, several intelligence service sources told SPIEGEL. Revelations of the eavesdropping could further damage already tense relations between the US government and Israel. During the peak stage of peace talks last year, Kerry spoke regularly with high-ranking negotiating partners in the Middle East. At the time, some of these calls were not made

At Chapman School in Nebraska, resourceful students hawk pizza and cookie dough to raise money for school supplies, field trips and an eighth-grade excursion to Washington. They peddle chocolate bars to help fund the yearbook. But the sales won´t be so sweet starting this fall. Campus bake sales—a mainstay of school fundraisers—are going on a diet. A federal law that aims to curb childhood obesity means that, in dozens of states, bake sales must adhere to nutrition requirements that could replace cupcakes and brownies with fruit cups and granola bars. Turning his back to the crowd at the podium, Reed caught a pass from former Buffalo Bills teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Jim Kelly on the stage at Fawcett Stadium on Saturday night. Someone we liked lost a primary. Someone we didn’t won. Some piece of legislation we hate passed; some other piece we liked did not. The charter of Hamas, the controlling faction in the Gaza Strip, states, “[Peace] initiatives, the so-called peaceful solutions, and the international conferences to resolve the Palestinian problem, are all contrary to the beliefs of the Islamic Resistance Movement. For renouncing any part of Palestine means renouncing part of the religion[.]” Suddenly, the current conflict between Israel and the Hamas faction in the Gaza Strip comes into striking clarity. In evaluating the violence currently going on in Gaza, it is informative to understand not only how both sides operate, but how both sides define themselves and their purposes.

It’s as if our president has read all of the disappointed head-shaking opinion pieces by Very Serious Liberals and is responding, “Hey, I’m not sad. I’m ridiculous!”Because in the last couple of weeks Barack Obama has reached his Basil Fawlty stage. Instead of John Cleese’s Fawlty rushing around a dismal English hotel trying to avoid insulting his German guests by squawking, “Don’t mention the war,” we have Obama stumbling around the country crying, “Don’t mention impeachment!”The president is, of course, the only American of any standing whatsoever talking about impeachment. At least Basil Fawlty had an excuse for his dizzy behavior:

Second Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, hy"d, who was killed by Hamas terrorists on Friday, was a close relative of Defense Minister Moshe Ya´alon, it was cleared for publication Sunday morning. Hebrew media has yet to officially indicate how the two were related, but the Hebrew phrase--karov mishpaha--indicates an immediate or otherwise very close family relationship between the two. The gag order was implemented on the family´s request, so as to not escalate the situation with Hamas in the event Goldin was alive and being held captive. Ya´alon related to his relative´s death for the first time publicly on Sunday afternoon.

Israel´s military has begun redeploying along its border with Gaza after the government signaled it would reassess its operations. A number of tanks and other vehicles were seen leaving Gaza on Sunday. In a televised address late on Saturday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested troops would reassess the operation after completing the demolition of Hamas military tunnels under the border. Security officials said the tunnel mission was winding down. At the same time, Mr Netanyahu warned Hamas would pay an "intolerable price" if it continued to fire rockets at Israel and that all options remain on the table.

Robert Kennedy’s widow, Ethel, and their eldest son, former US Rep. Joe Kennedy II, favor Warren — the darling of the party’s left-wing base who now sits in Ted Kennedy’s old seat — while Bobby Jr.

The Declaration of Independence is a dramatic statement to the world explaining why we broke away from England. But it’s the Constitution – not the Declaration – that defines how the

This week we learned that former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, the elected choice of the wealthy denizens of San Francisco, believes that Hamas is a humanitarian organization. Qatar, Hamas’ principle supporter, told her so. From former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton we learned that the reason Hamas’ weapons are found stored in civilian sites -- schools, mosques, hospitals, and UNWRA buildings -- is because the area is so small there’s nowhere else to hide them. And from the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, the viciously anti-Israeli Navi Pillay, we learned that the Israel may have committed war
