Even if lightning strikes Friday and Congress OK´s an immigration bill, activists angered with unaccompanied minors swarming over the U.S.-Mexico border plan to invade town hall meetings House members are planning during the five-week congressional recess. The immigration reduction group NumbersUSA is one of those already drawing up protest plans. They distributed details to their two million members on the lawmakers already planning to host public meetings in their district. According to the group, 99 Republicans have scheduled town halls. Just 41 Democrats have done the same. No immigration bill is expected to pass both houses and be signed by

KARNES CITY, Texas — A 29-acre facility which previously housed male illegal immigrants detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has a makeover and a new purpose. The building nearly 100 miles south of Austin in Karnes City, Texas will now be the temporary home for immigrant women and children detained at the border. It will also be a much more family friendly environment. “I am pretty sure you will agree this is nothing like we have seen before,” said ICE field office director Enrique Lucero during Thursday’s media tour of the facility. Previously, the people being held at the

Washington - A $694 million bill to further secure the U.S. border with Mexico, amid a flood of Central American migrants, cleared a procedural vote in the House of Representatives on Friday. By a vote of 218-191, the Republican-controlled House paved the way for debate and a final vote on passage of the bill later on Friday. No Democrats voted in favor of advancing the controversial legislation.

Two Democratic senators, Mark Udall (D-CO) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM), have called on CIA Director John Brennan to resign after he admitted that the CIA had spied on Senate computers used by Senate staffers to research a report on the agency’s interrogation and detention practices during the Bush administration. Brennan apparently called Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, to apologize. Despite this admission, however, neither President Obama nor Feinstein has called for Brennan’s resignation and the likelihood is the president won’t. Why? Because Brennan wasn’t asked to resign for a major intelligence breach that was far

Gaza - The Hamas Islamist group´s armed wing in the Gaza Strip said on Saturday it had no clear indication on the whereabouts of an Israeli soldier that Israel has accused them of abducting, adding he may have been killed during an ambush. A statement by the group said it had no contact with militants who were operating in the area in the southern Gaza Strip where Israel said Second-Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, 23, went missing on Friday, and it feared all had been killed. "We have lost contact with the group of fighters that took part in the ambush and we believe they were all killed in the (Israeli) bombardment.

It´s come to this. Russia is turning to Twitter to drop a sissy bomb on President Obama, using photos to challenge the manliness of America´s commander in chief, while pumping up their main man, President Vladimir Putin. The post by Russia´s deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin included side-by-side images of the two presidents. In one, Putin is confidently holding a majestic leopard. In the other, a notably younger Obama is holding a small, fluffy dog. The caption: "We have different values and allies." Burn. Last week, Arizona executed Joseph Wood. The procedure took nearly two hours and Friday, a Fox 10 reporter revealed that executioners had to give Wood 15 doses of lethal drugs. The Arizona Department of Corrections told reporter Troy Hayden Friday that it gave Wood the drugs over the course of his execution. The revelation that it took 15 doses of the drugs revises earlier reports that Wood was only given two doses. In light of Wood’s death, Arizona plans to review its execution process, the department said. Wood’s execution drew widespread attention for both its long duration, and for conflicting reports that he gasped for air

County Supervisor—with the U.S. State Department’s delaying of visas for the slain student’s parents. “It is unconscionable that suspect Jonathan Del-Carmen-Refugio, arrested for the murder of USC graduate student Xinran Ji, entered the country illegally -- yet the victim’s parents were delayed in entering the country legally to claim their son’s body due to failures in the State Department’s visa

Washington - About 550 Army majors, including some serving in Afghanistan, will soon be told they have to leave the service by next spring as part of a budget-driven downsizing of the service. Gen. John Campbell, the vice chief of the Army, acknowledged Friday that telling troops in a war zone that they´re out of a job is a difficult task. But he said some of the soldiers could join the National Guard or the Army Reserve. (Snip) The Army declined to say how many majors will be notified while they are at the battlefront. As a news story, the economy has been overshadowed lately by war abroad, a border crisis at home, and the escalating fight between President Obama and congressional Republicans on a variety of fronts. But in the long run of presidential politics, the economy is still pretty much the only story that really matters, and, while there´s been some good news in recent days, there are plenty of troubling indications that today´s economic unhappiness will dominate our politics for years to come. Yes, it´s a good thing that the economy grew at an estimated rate of 4.0 percent in the second quarter of

There was a bit of debate over the past few days about the level to which reform movements on the right resemble a mere reworking of “compassionate conservatism”, sparked by this Peter Beinart piece. Ross Douthat responded here. Reihan Salam here. Ramesh Ponnuru, with the most definitive “no”, here. I think Beinart’s piece may not be an accurate assessment of what’s motivating those on the right. But compassionate conservatism such as it is – a marketing gimmick which deploys altruism in defense of big government solutions – is very much alive, even if it has ditched the terminology along the

Alabama Power´s announcement that it would shutter several coal units in the state is tangible evidence that President Barack Obama´s "war on coal" is having negative consequences, critics said Friday. The company announced Friday that it would reduce the amount of coal it burns to comply with new Environmental Protection Agency regulations governing emissions. The changes, which the company said it would phase in the changes by 2016, will affect seven small power plants. Alabama Power said the changes will eliminate 60 jobs in Greene County, although officials said it would reduce the workforce through attrition and transfers,

President Obama defended Secretary of State John Kerry’s widely criticized failures to work out a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. “When I see John Kerry going out there, trying to broker a cease-fire, we should all be supportin’ him,” Obama said. “It should not be a bunch of complaints and second-guessing… nitpicking before he´s had a chance to complete his efforts.” Obama explained that the United States was going to be among the few countries that were actually going to try to negotiate. Even though the efforts appeared to fail, Obama argued, things tended to get better. “More often than

New York Times pundit and economist Paul Krugman says the “overwhelming” consensus among his colleagues proclaims the Obama stimulus reduced unemployment and was “worth it.” But most Americans have no idea that these academics speak with virtually one voice on Obamanomics. More important, over the past several years policy makers across the Western world have pretty much ignored the professional consensus on government spending and everything else, placing their faith instead in doctrines most economists firmly reject. Washington - It just got a little easier to swap cellphone providers. President Barack Obama signed a bill into law on Friday making it legal once again to unlock a cellphone without permission from your wireless provider, so long as the service contract has expired. Copyright law prohibits circumventing digital locks on technological devices. But for several years, cellphones were granted an exemption by government copyright lawyers as a way of making it easier for consumers to change carriers and recycle old phones. Then under industry pressure, the Library of Congress — which oversees copyright law — agreed to let the exemption lapse

That was the most astonishing moment of today’s galling Obama press conference. President Obama had earlier lectured journalists how to do their jobs, ripped Republicans for doing their jobs, and chided everyone within earshot for not wishing him a happy birthday yet. After that descent into pre-teen self-absorption, the president was asked about whether CIA chief John Brennan had lied to Congress under oath when he said that the agency had never spied on senators and staff who were investigating the CIA’s enhanced interrogations of a very few al Qaeda terrorists. Obama glided past the actual question, other than voicing

The Obama administration has said Russia violated a 1987 treaty that bans all U.S. and Russian missiles of intermediate range, meaning those that can travel

Global terrorist enterprises inspired by al-Qaida’s ideology pose a continuing threat to the United States. That threat has been enhanced by the presence of thousands of foreign fighters who have joined al-Qaida offshoots Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, now known as the Islamic State. Armed with Western passports and “clean skins,” these Western volunteers can more easily get past security measures to threaten commercial aircraft or carry out other terrorist operations in the West. When these battle-hardened veterans come marching home, will they seek to bring the violent jihad with them? The United
