Providing women with cost-free health-insurance coverage for contraceptives is one of the “obligations” of citizenship, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Wednesday in an interview with Yahoo’s Katie Couric.(snip) “The decision that an employer could refuse to cover contraceptives meant that women would have to take care of that for themselves or the men who cared,” Ginsburg replied. “Contraceptive protection is something that every woman must have access to to control her own destiny,” she added. “I certainly respect the belief of the Hobby Lobby owners. On the other hand, they have no constitutional

Happy Friday, Mr. President. Overall disapproval: (Tweet) We ran through the immigration numbers yesterday. And now, foreign policy: Foreign policy used to be a bright spot in Americans’ dimming opinion of President Barack Obama. Not anymore. Associated Press-GfK polling found a spring and summer of discontent with the president’s handling of world events. Obama’s consistently low marks across crises such as the fighting in Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Hamas could benefit Republicans aiming to win control Congress in the fall…Asked about world trouble spots: —42 percent say the conflict between

There was a bit of debate over the past few days about the level to which reform movements on the right resemble a mere reworking of “compassionate conservatism”, sparked by this Peter Beinart piece. Ross Douthat responded here. Reihan Salam here. Ramesh Ponnuru, with the most definitive “no”, here. I think Beinart’s piece may not be an accurate assessment of what’s motivating those on the right. But compassionate conservatism such as it is – a marketing gimmick which deploys altruism in defense of big government solutions – is very much alive, even if it has ditched the terminology along the

It is too early to say anything definitive about the Hamas decision to apparently break the ceasefire and attack an Israeli position, except that if it is true, as reports indicate, that Hamas militants came through a tunnel and carried underground and back into Gaza a live Israeli captive, then this moment could represent not another terrible, dispiriting incident in a terrible, dispiriting mini-war, but a fairly decisive turning point in which all swords are unsheathed. (Snip) a) The compact between the Israeli army and Israeli parents is simple: You give us your sons, and we will do whatever we can to keep them alive. This includes conducting operations

Alabama Power´s announcement that it would shutter several coal units in the state is tangible evidence that President Barack Obama´s "war on coal" is having negative consequences, critics said Friday. The company announced Friday that it would reduce the amount of coal it burns to comply with new Environmental Protection Agency regulations governing emissions. The changes, which the company said it would phase in the changes by 2016, will affect seven small power plants. Alabama Power said the changes will eliminate 60 jobs in Greene County, although officials said it would reduce the workforce through attrition and transfers,

President Obama defended Secretary of State John Kerry’s widely criticized failures to work out a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. “When I see John Kerry going out there, trying to broker a cease-fire, we should all be supportin’ him,” Obama said. “It should not be a bunch of complaints and second-guessing… nitpicking before he´s had a chance to complete his efforts.” Obama explained that the United States was going to be among the few countries that were actually going to try to negotiate. Even though the efforts appeared to fail, Obama argued, things tended to get better. “More often than

The science is settled in yet another field — economics — but no one’s listening. Citizens of the galaxy, be afraid. New York Times pundit and economist Paul Krugman says the “overwhelming” consensus among his colleagues proclaims the Obama stimulus reduced unemployment and was “worth it.” But most Americans have no idea that these academics speak with virtually one voice on Obamanomics. More important, over the past several years policy makers across the Western world have pretty much ignored the professional consensus on government spending and everything else, placing their faith instead in doctrines most economists firmly reject. Washington - It just got a little easier to swap cellphone providers. President Barack Obama signed a bill into law on Friday making it legal once again to unlock a cellphone without permission from your wireless provider, so long as the service contract has expired. Copyright law prohibits circumventing digital locks on technological devices. But for several years, cellphones were granted an exemption by government copyright lawyers as a way of making it easier for consumers to change carriers and recycle old phones. Then under industry pressure, the Library of Congress — which oversees copyright law — agreed to let the exemption lapse

That was the most astonishing moment of today’s galling Obama press conference. President Obama had earlier lectured journalists how to do their jobs, ripped Republicans for doing their jobs, and chided everyone within earshot for not wishing him a happy birthday yet. After that descent into pre-teen self-absorption, the president was asked about whether CIA chief John Brennan had lied to Congress under oath when he said that the agency had never spied on senators and staff who were investigating the CIA’s enhanced interrogations of a very few al Qaeda terrorists. Obama glided past the actual question, other than voicing

Rogue agency is rogue. West Virginia coal company, Alpha Natural Resources, told 1,1000 workers to prepare for layoffs because 11 mines across the state are “subject to being idled.” The reason: weak market conditions and Environmental Protection Agency regulations, the company said. The company notified the 1,100 employees late Thursday that “sustained weak market conditions and government regulations have challenged the entire Central Appalachian mining industry.” The layoffs would not take place till mid-October, Alpha said. Washington - President Barack Obama told Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday that the United States remains deeply concerned that Russia is ramping up support for pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine. He later conceded that pressure from recently imposed U.S. and European sanctions "hasn´t resolved the problem yet." In a phone call between the two leaders, Obama also raised concerns that Russia violated a key Cold War era nuclear weapons treaty, the White House said. The Obama administration has said Russia violated a 1987 treaty that bans all U.S. and Russian missiles of intermediate range, meaning those that can travel

Global terrorist enterprises inspired by al-Qaida’s ideology pose a continuing threat to the United States. That threat has been enhanced by the presence of thousands of foreign fighters who have joined al-Qaida offshoots Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, now known as the Islamic State. Armed with Western passports and “clean skins,” these Western volunteers can more easily get past security measures to threaten commercial aircraft or carry out other terrorist operations in the West. The Obama administration on Friday appealed the ruling that some subsidies under ObamaCare are illegal. The Justice Department filed a petition with the full D.C. Circuit Court asking the judges to review the ruling in Halbig v. Burwell that overturned some of the subsidies distributed to help people pay for health insurance. The 2-1 ruling dealt a major blow to the healthcare law, and if allowed to stand could demolish one of the pillars of the Affordable Care Act. “The disruption threatened by the panel majority’s erroneous interpretation and the direct conflict with King present a question of ‘exceptional importance’

The lawsuit seeks to block deportation of just those children, unless the government can ensure adequate legal representation. However, the American Civil Liberties Union, American Immigration Council and other groups involved have also filed a lawsuit on behalf of thousands of children alleging the government has neglected to provide them with lawyers for their deportation hearings.

President Obama´s birthday is on August 4th, and the Republican National Committee is sending him a copy of the Constitution. You know, for review purposes. President Obama was, in a previous life, a professor of constitutional law. That´s what makes his blatant disregard for the Constitution so much more unfortunate. Not that ivory tower academics would be the best judges for the interpretation of the Constitution, but one would hope he´d have some base-level awareness of how it limits government powers. Unfortunately, he´s shown that not to be the case. As the RNC will write to its members: Unfortunately, President

In a speech to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers today, Attorney General Eric Holder reiterated his criticism of mandatory minimum sentences, calling them "outdated and overly stringent." He also questioned the argument that mandatory minimums are necessary to encourage "cooperation": “Like anyone who served as a prosecutor in the days before sentencing guidelines existed and mandatory minimums took effect, I know from experience that defendant cooperation depends on the certainty of swift and fair punishment, not on the disproportionate length of a mandatory minimum sentence.”
