Half a dozen children are listed as plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit naming Attorney General Eric Holder, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, and Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell as defendants. The lawsuit seeks to block deportation of just those children, unless the government can ensure adequate legal representation. However, the American Civil Liberties Union, American Immigration Council and other groups involved have also filed a lawsuit on behalf of thousands of children alleging the government has neglected to provide them with lawyers for their deportation hearings.

U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday called on Hamas to unconditionally release Second Lieutenant (Platoon Leader) Hadar Goldin, who is feared kidnapped in Gaza. [Snip] “I think it’s important to note that we have and I have unequivocally condemned Hamas and the Palestinian factions that were responsible for killing two Israeli soldiers and abducting a third minutes after a ceasefire was announced,” he said, according to the Guardian. “I want to make sure they are listening... That soldier needs to be unconditionally released as soon as possible,” he added. "I think it´s going to be very hard to put a ceasefire back together

President Barack Obama blasted congressional Republicans Friday for failing to craft a workable response to the border crisis before leaving Washington for their summer recess, setting the stage for executive actions to address the surge in child migrants from central America. “House Republicans as we speak are trying to pass the most extreme and unworkable version of a bill that they already know is going nowhere, that can’t pass the Senate,” Obama said in a hastily-announced afternoon appearance in the White House press briefing room. “They´re not even trying to to solve the problem,” the president complained.

The RNC´s Birthday Present to

President Obama´s birthday is on August 4th, and the Republican National Committee is sending him a copy of the Constitution. You know, for review purposes. President Obama was, in a previous life, a professor of constitutional law. That´s what makes his blatant disregard for the Constitution so much more unfortunate. Not that ivory tower academics would be the best judges for the interpretation of the Constitution, but one would hope he´d have some base-level awareness of how it limits government powers. Unfortunately, he´s shown that not to be the case. As the RNC will write to its members: Unfortunately, President

In a speech to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers today, Attorney General Eric Holder reiterated his criticism of mandatory minimum sentences, calling them "outdated and overly stringent." He also questioned the argument that mandatory minimums are necessary to encourage "cooperation": “Like anyone who served as a prosecutor in the days before sentencing guidelines existed and mandatory minimums took effect, I know from experience that defendant cooperation depends on the certainty of swift and fair punishment, not on the disproportionate length of a mandatory minimum sentence.”

WASHINGTON— President Barack Obama says House Republicans are trying to pass the most extreme and unworkable version of an immigration bill even though they know the bill isn’t going anywhere. Republicans are pushing legislation that could clear the way for eventual deportation of more than 500,000 immigrants brought here illegally as kids and address the surge of immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. Obama says Republicans know that legislation won’t succeed in the Senate. He says Republicans aren’t even trying to solve the problem. He says they’re just trying check a box leaving town for their annual August recess. House Republicans

The polls show the American people turning against Obama and left, especially with respect to the chaos on our border. Salon being Salon dropped a quarter in Kim Messick so he could shriek about his paranoid visions of racism for something like 2,000 rambling words: The rise of right-wing “news” platforms (Drudge, Fox, Breitbart) has created an almost seamless web of white rage, a wall of (conservative) sound even Phil Spector would envy. It allows entertainers like Limbaugh to discuss something as “fact” because it was mentioned by “journalists” on, say, Fox News, while the latter can report (and thereby

A small private jet based in Atlanta has been dispatched to Liberia to pick up two Americans who have been infected with the Ebola virus. Officials say the jet can only carry one patient at a time and is outfitted with a special, portable tent designed for transporting patients with highly infectious diseases. The two Americans who contracted the virus are Dr. Kent Brantly, a former JPS Hospital resident in Fort Worth, and Nancy Writebol of Charlotte, N.C., a hospital hygenist. Both work for North Carolina-based Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian relief organization. It is not known which patient will be

The United Nations slammed Israel for possibly committing war crimes in its fight against Hamas — and then backed that accusation by suggesting the Jewish nation ought to be sharing its Iron Dome defensive technology with the very terror group it’s fighting. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said to members of the media at an “emergency” meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council that Israel was falling short in its duty to protect citizens in the Gaza Strip from getting killed by its rockets. “There is a strong possibility that international law has been violated, in a

Now that everyone’s favorite Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat has announced he is prepared to go Total Obama from Day 1 if he’s restored to the governor’s mansion, voters can’t be blamed for wondering whether Charlie Crist really wants the job. Maybe he’s already moved on to the Next Big Thing. After all, the most recent polls indicate thorough dissatisfaction with President Obama. Not only is he upside-down on virtually every measurable facet of his job performance, CNN recently and famously found if we took an election mulligan, the golfer-in-chief would lose to Republican Mitt Romney in a landslide. WASHINGTON — Last summer, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., embarked on what his office trumpeted as a four-day, 1,000-mile trip across his state, with press releases noting he "woke up early to hit the road," making stops at a minor league ballpark, a craft brewery and a Roanoke rail yard, among others. But for several hundred of those miles, Warner was not hitting the road — he was flying a chartered plane at a cost to taxpayers of $8,500. Warner was one of two dozen U.S. senators who flew taxpayer-funded charter airplanes to, from or around their home state last year

President Obama’s federal health care law may be headed to the Supreme Court – again.
The high court has been asked to review a July 22 ruling by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals that declared constitutional all federal subsidies granted to enrollees of the health care system. The losing plaintiff in the case officially appealed the ruling in a petition Thursday to the Supreme Court. The Fourth Circuit ruling contradicted another announced hours earlier by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that ruled the IRS went too far in extending subsidies to those who buy insurance through the federally-run exchange, known as HealthCare.gov. It is likely to take weeks, if not months, to learn if the Justices will even take up the petition. It also is not yet clear how -- or if -- the Obama administration will appeal the first ruling.

House Republican leaders, a day after failing to get a vote on their border crisis bill, are scrambling to piece together a new version before lawmakers break for the August recess -- even though there´s little chance of any bill getting to President Obama´s desk in the near-term. Sources say the Republicans´ new version of the bill adds additional funding for the National Guard and includes additional restrictions aimed at preventing Obama from passing executive orders giving a reprieve to new groups of illegal immigrants. The new measure´s price tag is said to be $694 million, up from $659 million -- but

The Foreign Office is urgently investigating reports that a soldier thought to have been captured by Hamas fighters in Gaza is a British Israeli. He disappeared when a humanitarian ceasefire brokered by the United States and the United Nations collapsed into more bloodshed just hours after it was supposed to take effect. Reports of the kidnapping provoked a furious backlash from Israel, with former deputy defence minister, Danny Danon saying: ´If we don´t get the soldier

"Republicans want to indiscriminately return children to their deaths!" Rep. Cardenas was one of many Democrats who blasted Republicans for wanting to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States. And in a bit of political theater, the Friday morning debate was interrupted by dozens of Democrats stepping forward in futile attempts to bring up the "comprehensive immigration reform bill" passed by the Senate. Slightly more Americans identify as Democrat than Republican, but recently history indicates that edge isn’t enough to make up for the energy GOP voters will hold this November, according to Gallup. “That Republican Party turnout advantage leaves the Democratic Party politically vulnerable in midterm election years when they do not have a significant cushion in partisanship,” the pollsters said. A narrow, 2-percent lead for Democrats is similar to what Gallup measured in 1994, 2002 and 2010 — strong years for Republicans. “In years when Democrats enjoyed a wide lead in partisanship, even as Democrats turned out at lower rates than Republicans, the electorate

Manufacturing a crisis is what pundits and politicians do best, and the media mills are running three shifts daily now to manufacture panic over what the Democrats want the public to think is the impending impeachment of President Obama. This might frighten the horses and scare the women in flyover country, but it’s all fun and games in Washington, with the game recognized by Democrat and Republican for the scam it is. But the purveyors of the scam are determined to turn a profit with it. Sometimes scams succeed. This could be the opportunity to learn a little about impeachment. John A.
