U.S. stocks slumped in a broad decline Thursday, with the Dow and S&P 500 turning negative for July on concerns over the strength of overseas economies and continuing tensions with Russia. Weak U.S. data contributed to the bearish tone as jobless claims rose more than expected in the latest week, and the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index unexpectedly fell in July to its lowest since June 2013. All 10 primary S&P 500 sectors were down on the day, with energy the biggest decliner with a drop of 0.9 percent. About 82 percent of stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange

Israelis wish Kerry would just go away

In his never-ending quest to win the far-left Nobel Peace Prize, John Kerry has deliberately put the security of the state of Israel at greater risk. Sadly, and quite dangerously, this is nothing new for Kerry. In January of this year, Israeli Minister of Defense Moshe Yaalon, recognizing Mr. Kerry’s self-serving endgame, said: “American Secretary of State John Kerry, who turned up here determined and acting out of misplaced obsession and messianic fervor, cannot teach me anything about the conflict with the Palestinians … the only thing that can ‘save us’ is for John Kerry to win a Noble Prize

Trenton — A new poll on the 2016 presidential race shows Gov. Chris Christie´s popularity among voters in the swing state of Ohio is still lagging. The Quinnipiac University survey, released this morning, shows a larger percentage of Ohio voters see New Jersey´s Republican governor in a negative light than those who view him positively — 36 to 34 percent. At the same time, Christie trails Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton by 9 percentage points — 46 to 37 percent — in a mock-head-to-head matchup for the White House. That´s a 1-point drop from the group´s last survey, in May.

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon called on Israel on Thursday to do more to protect civilian life during its military operations in Gaza, saying the conflict was taking too high a toll on civilians. "The civilian casualties in Gaza have been too high. And it´s become clear that the Israelis need to do more to live up to their very high standards - their very high and very public standards - for protecting civilian life," Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said at a news briefing. Gaza officials say more than 1,370 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in the

House GOP pulls border bill

House Republicans pulled Speaker John A. Boehner’s slimmed-down legislation to address the brewing immigration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border rather than see it defeated, amid a conservative revolt that the $659 million proposal did not address the core issues. Faced with certain defeat, Boehner (R-Ohio) pulled the legislation from consideration Thursday afternoon, according to guidance from leadership advisers. With more than 20 House conservatives opposed, Boehner did not have enough votes from his own Republican ranks because virtually all Democrats opposed the legislation. The resulting lack of action would end the congressional summer session in a familiar legislative failure, as

UPDATE: House Republicans have abandoned vote on border security bill in face of tea party opposition, the Associated Press reports. WASHINGTON — House Republicans moved toward a vote Thursday to address the immigration crisis on the border, after GOP leaders agreed to conservative demands for a separate vote aimed at blocking President Barack Obama from expanding deportation relief to millions. The surprise maneuver late Wednesday night appeared to be having the desired effect of locking down conservative lawmakers´ support for the $659 million bill to deal with the crisis involving tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors streaming into the U.S.

It turns out that Bill Clinton had Osama bin Laden on his mind mere hours before al Qaeda attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Speaking to a group of Australian businessmen on Sept. 10, 2001, Clinton said he once had the opportunity to kill bin Laden, but decided not to because it would have led to the deaths of innocent civilians. An audio recording of the remarks was released for the first time today by Australian media.

Perhaps it says something about us that our most interesting presidential candidates swear they won´t run for president. This is true of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and it´s increasingly true of Mitt Romney. As regular readers of this column know, I´ve never been much of a Romney booster. I´ve also expressed skepticism about the notion he would run again. But let´s not let "a foolish consistency" cloud our judgment. There is reason to believe that a third try wouldn´t be an absurd venture. First, in the intervening years since 2012 — and on a range of issues, not the least of which is

North Korean defectors and South Korean activists launched snack-filled balloons across the border into North Korea Wednesday. The balloons—containing cookies and Choco Pies, a popular chocolate snack–were launched from the border town of Paju in South Korea. The Choco Pies, distributed to workers at factories at the Kaesong Industrial Complex, a demilitarized zone, where both South and North Koreans work, were sold on the black market in North Korea and authorities in Pyongyang ordered the factory owners to stop handing them out.

In March, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) revealed that CIA Director John Brennan told her that the intelligence agency he leads had improperly accessed Senate computers and secretly removed classified documents while the agency’s War on Terror interrogation tactics were under investigation. Feinstein alleged that Brennan told her the CIA took that action because the agency believed the Senate might have accessed documents that they were not authorized to see. In a statement, Brennan said the Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman had leveled “spurious allegations about CIA actions that were wholly unsupported by the facts.” While he confessed that the agency had

President Obama and Hillary Clinton will both be on Martha’s Vineyard next month at the same time, The Boston Globe reports. Clinton is scheduled to sign copies of her memoir Hard Choices at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven on Aug. 13. She’s considered the 2016 Democratic front-runner for president if she decides to enter the race. The trip by Clinton overlaps with Obama´s Aug. 9-23 vacation at Martha´s Vineyard. The bookstore appears to only be a 25-minute drive away from Chilmark, Mass., which is where the Obamas will be staying, according to Martha´s Vineyard Times. It’s unclear,

Congress is expected to adopt a bipartisan deal to improve veterans´ health care before it adjourns for a five-week summer recess. Representative Jeff Miller (R-Florida) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), chairmen of the House and Senate Veterans Affairs committees, announced a $17 billion initiative that would help reduce the backlog of veterans who have had to endure long waits before receiving the care they need. The legislation addresses the immediate crisis, but it will not cure a system plagued by inefficiency, ineptitude, and worse. So says those radical right-wingers at the Washington Post. Immigration has emerged as perhaps President Obama’s worst issue — definitely for today, and maybe of his entire presidency — when it comes to public perception. A new poll from AP-GfK shows more than two-thirds of Americans (68 percent) disapprove of Obama’s handling of the immigration issue in general. Just 31 percent approve — down from 38 percent two months ago. Big surprise here. When you encourage and allow chaos on the border, Americans find you in disfavor. Obama has the unique ability to irritate everyone. The middle and right are

"Thank you," Obama replied, as he launched into a partisan speech, criticizing Republicans for blocking his liberal "opportunity agenda" and listing all the things he´s done on his own: "So some of the things we´re doing without Congress are making a difference, but we could do so much

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell complained Thursday that President Obama has gone AWOL on the border surge crisis by refusing to try to work with Republicans on a bill to solve the problem. After initially laying out a series of reforms that could help speed up deportations, Mr. Obama has since retreated, Mr. McConnell said, after “he listened once again to his most partisan instincts instead of uniting Congress around a common solution.” “It’s exasperating for those of us who want to work toward bipartisan solutions. It’s confusing, I’m sure, to Democrats who share our desire to get something done.
