During a hearing with House Democrats on Tuesday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi argued that the bill proposed by Republicans did not have the adequate resources to help unattended minors crossing the border with the immigration court process. The bill, announced by Republicans on Tuesday, would spend $659 million in new spending in response to the crisis on the border. Citing a friend, Pelosi said that “we cannot have deportation without representation,” and she praised the groups that were working to help the detained children. The hearing featured unattended minors, now living in the United States, who complained about how

Former Minnesota Governor and Navy SEAL veteran Jesse Ventura won his defamation lawsuit against the widow of former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. He was awarded a whopping $1.8 million in damages by a Federal jury. Ventura alleges that details of a bar fight that Kyle wrote about in his book American Sniper, in which Kyle says he punched Ventura after he made the comment that the Navy SEALs “deserved to lose a few,” were fabricated. From Politico: A jury awarded former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura $1.8 million Tuesday in his lawsuit against the estate of “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle. On

The Washington Post and the New York Times disagree on the who’s leading the charge in imposing new sanctions on Russia. (Snip) James Nixey, head of the Russia and Eurasia program at the London-based think tank Chatham House said “the truth is we beat Russia in the Cold War, particularly due to our economic strength, and we can do so again if we’re unified.” But unified under whom? The sense conveyed by both the NYT and the WaPo is that Obama is now a peer among equals. Boehner may have decided not to impeace Obama as president of the United

Fresno, Calif. — A California man who disappeared after refusing treatment for tuberculosis, which can be contagious and spreads by coughing or sneezing, was found and arrested on charges of refusing to comply with health officials, a prosecutor said Tuesday. Eduardo Rosas Cruz, 25, was arrested late Monday in Kern County, San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Stephen Taylor said. Before Rosas Cruz can be sent back to San Joaquin County, he has to be medically cleared, which could take weeks, Taylor said. Authorities last week obtained an arrest warrant for Rosas Cruz, saying he was diagnosed with tuberculosis in

The Financial Times reports that a drop in ad sales at the New York Times caused the left-wing newspaper´s profits to collapse 54% in the second quarter of this year. The Times netted only $9.2 million this quarter compared to $20.1 million last year. A fall in advertising revenues and stepped-up investment in digital products outweighed rises in digital subscribers and circulation revenue at the New York Times, sending headline profit 54 per cent lower in the second quarter. Jeff Sessions: John Boehner
´Surrenders to a Lawless President´

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said in a statement Tuesday that House Speaker John Boehner’s border crisis working group’s legislation is a “surrender” to a “lawless president.” “The Obama Administration has openly declared its plan to implement a unilateral executive amnesty for 5–6 million more illegal immigrants,” Sessions said. He went on: This unlawful amnesty—urged on by congressional Democrats—would include work permits, taking jobs directly from millions of struggling American citizens. Any action Congress might consider to address the current border crisis would be futile should the President go forward with these lawless actions. Congress must speak out

With the party united, the odds are now at least even that the GOP will not only hold the House but also capture the Senate in November. But before traditional conservatives cheer that prospect, they might take a closer look at the foreign policy that a Republican Senate would seek to impose upon the nation. Specifically, they should spend time reading S. 2277, the "Russian Aggression Prevention Act of 2014," introduced by Sen. Bob Corker on May 1, and endorsed by half of the Senate´s GOP caucus.

Smith´s commentary occurred during a discussion on ESPN2´s "First Take" last Friday about the NFL´s two-game suspension of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice following charges he assaulted his now-wife. The remarks attracted widespread attention, including a stinging rebuke online from a fellow ESPN personality. Smith issued an on-air apology Monday, saying it was the most egregious mistake of his

Nightline co-anchor Dan Harris on Monday night mocked Sarah Palin for her new internet channel and falsely identified the conservative as "the woman who says she can see Russia from her house." [MP3 audio here.] No, she didn´t. It was Saturday Night Live´s Tina Fey in 2008 who uttered this line. In the tease for the report, Harris played the actual quote: "You can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska." So what is the point of misleading viewers with something Palin didn´t say? Making his contempt clear, Harris derided the Republican as the "former half-term governor of Alaska."

McALLEN, Texas — For nearly two months, images of immigrant children who have crossed the border without a parent, only to wind up in concrete holding cells once in United States, have tugged at heartstrings. Yet most Americans now say U.S. law should be changed so they can be sent home quickly, without a deportation hearing. A new Associated Press-GfK poll finds two-thirds of Americans now say illegal immigration is a serious problem for the country, up 14 points since May and on par with concern about the issue in May 2010, when Arizona´s passage of a strict anti-immigration measure

It may take a while before investors get a clear picture on just how well—or poorly—the U.S. economy is performing. As Wall Street awaits Wednesday´s reading on gross domestic product in the second quarter, two things are becoming clear: Growth is a good deal short of where most economists had expected it to be by now, and even a particularly strong showing over the past three months probably came in large part because the period before it was so bad. "Second quarter, you´re getting a bounce-back from the first quarter," Jeffrey Rosenberg, BlackRock´s chief investment strategist for fixed income, told

The influx of illegal immigrants into southern Texas is depleting law enforcement resources and causing heavy amounts of damage in the area, said several sheriffs gathered for the annual Sheriff’s Association of Texas convention. “The damage is constant,” Brooks County chief deputy Benny Martinez told News 4 San Antonio at the conference, held in San Antonio on Monday and Tuesday. Martinez estimated that 85 percent of cases he handles are related to immigration issues and that his rural county is not equipped to handle the workload. Let’s concede for a moment that most of us don’t believe the United States should be taking sides in conflicts abroad. Even so, most Americans would probably agree that at a minimum our diplomatic efforts should not cause unnecessary harm. Which brings me to Secretary of State John Kerry’s recent misadventure in the Middle East. It seems like a rather big deal that Egypt, Israel, Fatah, Jordan, Saudi Arabia—ostensibly, all allies of ours—agree on anything. This development, one imagines, might be something the United States would be interested in fostering rather than destroying. Certainly, the idea that Hamas’ power should be

A 151-year-old house that was the first in the world to be lit using hydroelectricity is once again harnessing the power of water to light the property. Cragside, in Northumberland, was built by Lord Armstrong in 1863 and he used lakes on the estate to generate electricity through a turbine. A 56ft (17-metre) Archimedes screw has now been installed which will use water to produce enough energy to light the 350 bulbs in the house. Geordie actor Robson Green today turned on the screw at the National Trust property and launched the hydropower project. Property curator Andrew Sawyer said: ‘It

Hannity accused the Obama administration’s head diplomat of lacking the moral clarity to understand the gravity of the threat Hamas has posed to Israel’s security. “It’s so bad, the Israeli cabinet, legendary by the way for its inability to agree on anything, actually rejected Kerry’s proposal 19-0,” Hannity said. “All across Israel, today, there’s nothing but universal condemnation for John Kerry
