One of the heaviest nights of

Gaza endured over five hours of thunderous bombardment by strike aircraft and artillery on Tuesday morning as Israel retaliated for the deaths of five soldiers. From midnight until 5.30am, the western edge of Gaza City echoed to explosions. At first, the barrage was inflicted by heavy artillery, possibly including the guns of warships anchored off the coast. Later, attack helicopters and jet fighters were also overhead. [Snip] At present, Israeli troops and tanks control a buffer zone extending for two miles into Gaza along the territory’s northern and eastern borders. This area already accounts for 44 percent of Gaza’s total

Monday on Newsmax TV´s "The Steve Malzberg Show," Dr. Ben Carson, former chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children´s Center, said he was one step closer to running for president. Host Steve Malzberg asked Carson if he was any closer to making a decision to run for president. Carson replied by saying he was currently "in the listening process." Carson also said it also depends on the will of the American people to go in the right direction and that he explained could hinge on the Republican Party gaining control of the U.S. Senate in this November´s midterm elections,

What do four adult entertainers, 138 engineers, a handful of pilots and a pastor have in common? They all think they have hot tips about an alleged financial fraud. They are also among the more than 6,500 people who have offered confidential information under the whistleblower program of the Securities and Exchange Commission. The agency set up the program in mid-2011 with hopes of eliciting dirt on corporate wrongdoers. It offers a bounty of up to 30% of penalties for any monetary sanctions the agency extracts that exceed $1 million. The potential windfall has attracted tips from at least 68 countries. Nearly

Israel´s prime minister has warned of a "prolonged" military campaign in Gaza, as it saw one of its heaviest nights of shelling since the conflict began. Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would continue to act until it had achieved its aim of destroying militant group Hamas´s network of underground tunnels. Israel made 60 air strikes on targets in Gaza overnight including TV stations and the house of a key Hamas leader. It said militants had launched three rockets at Israel. At least 13 Palestinians are reported to have been killed in the overnight attacks, including six victims in one house in the Bureji refugee camp,

The two-year search for a child molester ended Monday in a wild shootout inside a West Village smoke shop that left the suspect dead and three lawmen wounded. Charles Mozdir blasted away at an NYPD detective and two U.S. marshals with a .32-caliber revolver when the officers tried to pry him out of the Smoking Culture shop on W. Fourth St., where he had been working as a salesman. “They came in to talk to him and he just opened fire,” said Aksana Freeman, a manicurist at a nearby store who sometimes shared a smoke with Mozdir. The IRS scandal has just gained another dimension, and it is more than a "smidgen." Emails uncovered by the House Ways and Means Committee show that the State Department was involved in the IRS’s attempt to deny tax-exempt status to Z-Street, the pro-Israel organization founded and run by AT contributor Lori Lowenthal Marcus, based on Z-Street’s pro-Israel positions that conflicted with Obama administration policy. This is known as “viewpoint discrimination,” and is strictly illegal. The only power plant supplying electricity to the Gaza Strip was knocked out of commission by Israeli shelling, deputy director of the energy authority in the Palestinian territory said Tuesday. Israel´s Channel 2 said that Gaza´s electricity supply has been reduced by 90% since the start of the military campaign there. "Gaza´s sole power plant has stopped working due to Israeli shelling last night, which damaged the steam generator and later hit the fuel tanks which set them on fire," Fathi al-Sheikh Khalil told AFP. The Satanic Temple announced today that it wants its believers to be exempted from reading state-mandated materials and informed consent laws when expectant women try to receive an abortion, and they cited the recent Supreme Court Hobby Lobby decision as a basis for their exemption. In a statement released today, The Satanic Temple states: Informed consent bills requiring abortion providers to give their patients official "informational" material regarding the procedure have been criticized in the past for providing biased and false information to women in a bald effort at dissuading them from abortions. The Republican National Committee will take up the explosive subject of the race-card playing radio ads in the Mississippi Senate GOP run-off election between Senator Thad Cochran and Tea Party challenger Chris McDaniel. The RNC is scheduled to hold its summer meeting in Chicago August 6-9 at the Westin Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The discussion, according to an RNC source, will occur on the morning of August 7 — behind closed doors — at the “Members Only” breakfast that runs between 8:00-9:30. There is no word whether RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, under pressure to investigate the ads, will then comment publicly

Last week, amid alarm bells going off in Gaza, Ukraine, and on the Texas border, and while he golfed and attended campaign fundraisers, President Barack Obama saw his approval rating as measured by Gallup drop to 39 percent. Some 54 percent of the venerable polling firm’s respondents registered active disapproval of the president’s job performance, an indication that America is coming to a consensus around the idea that Obama is a failure in office. This comes with a flurry of mainstream media reports speculating that Obama has checked out of his job, and a growing acceptance of the narrative that the

On July 4, 2014, I wrote an article, “Litigating Lost E-mails,” which proposed using federal judges to compel corrupt bosses to the IRS to force the Obama administration to tell the truth about the “lost” e-mails or face the consequences of lying to federal judges. What I proposed was to do what Democrats did forty years ago this month to Nixon. The case filed against Nixon in United States District Court was decided on May 31, 1974, and the case was argued before the Supreme Court on July 8, 1974. The unanimous decision (Justice Rehnquist recused himself) was decided barely two

The Nogales International reported that "torrent of debris-filled floodwater down Ephriam Canyon and into yards and homes along Western Avenue." I suppose it´s natural that the average American believes that the Crash of 2008 was caused by greedy bankers and that the problem with health insurance is insurance company profits. After all, most Americans work for big companies, and they know that at any moment corporate security could appear at their cubicle to escort them to the exit. Employees know the power their bosses have over them; why shouldn´t the bosses have the same power to work their will over politicians? Not only that, but politicians pose as the worker´s friend. Jeff Sessions is mounting a heroic campaign to persuade Congress to block President Obama’s apparently imminent decree legalizing, in essence, five to six million illegal immigrants by granting them work permits. The Obama administration has been lawless in many ways, but this is stark illegality even by its standards. This is what the actual law says: INA Sec. 274A– Unlawful Employment of Aliens (a) Making employment of unauthorized aliens unlawful (1) In general It is unlawful for a person or other entity— (A) to hire, or to recruit or refer for a fee, for employment in the United States an alien knowing the alien is

If there is one nightmare common to all U.S. senators, it’s the possibility of an unexpected upset by an underdog challenger come Election Day. Not only do they lose their seat, but the shock of defeat becomes one of the most notable parts of their biography. This November, no one wants to be the Senate’s Eric Cantor. For my money, one of the most jaw-dropping Senate results in modern history occurred exactly 50 years ago. It’s barely remembered even by the political community, but it shouldn’t be forgotten. This old race teaches enduring lessons about politics, and in 2014 we’ll see

Employer health insurance

When President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, its requirement that large employers provide health coverage or pay a penalty seemed to many supporters a key pillar of the effort to guarantee health coverage to Americans. Four years later and after repeated delays, the so-called employer mandate has become something of an orphan, reviled by the law´s opponents and increasingly seen as unnecessary by many of its backers. Twice in the last two years, the Obama administration has put off the penalties, citing difficulties enforcing the mandate. House Republicans plan to sue the president, largely over his suspension of the mandate, saying

llary Clinton’s book, Hard Choices, has been something of a hot topic lately, although not in a positive sense. Here is a list of some of the most brutal - albeit hilarious – comments found on Amazon.com’s review page for Hard Choices. Enjoy! 1.) Some found alternative uses:

Imagine you’re about to sit down for supper when suddenly 760 folks show up on your front porch wanting fried catfish and hushpuppies. You’d be fit to be tied as they say in Tennessee. And Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam is fit to be tied. The Obama administration recently released 760 illegal immigrant children to sponsors in the Volunteer State without any warning, the governor charged. There was not so much as a text message or tweet. “It is unacceptable that we became aware via a posting on the HHS website that 760 unaccompanied children have been released by the Office of Refugee Resettlement to

Second-term presidents rarely achieve as much as they did during their four years in office, either because top aides tend to be off their political game or because of external events. Reagan´s second term team, for example, was greatly distracted by the Iran-Contra scandal. George W. Bush´s second term was consumed by Hurricane Katrina and the economic collapse of 2007. As a result, second-term presidents tend to spend their final days in the Oval Office with low public approval ratings and rapidly waning influence on the course of events. President Obama is certainly following the familiar path with approval ratings sinking into

News of a devastating solar storm ‘just missing’ Earth in 2012 made the rounds last week. Turns out that storm was nowhere near us, and similar storms have happened before. The Universe is trying to kill us! Or at least, it’s not a very friendly place beyond the comforting confines of planet Earth. A recent study by solar physicists points out that we had a near-miss with a strong solar storm back in 2012. But how close did we really come to doom and destruction? Our Sun is fairly quiet as stars go, but it does have active times that impact us

The funding will go towards “youth engagement” at the conference, which will feature a “Responding to Climate Change Stream” and a “Climate Change Journey” initiative. Barack Obama’s disdain for the slow, grinding mechanisms of government has become unmistakable of late. So it is little surprise that, frustrated by congressional inaction on his proposal for “comprehensive immigration reform,” the president last month declared that he would “fix as much of our immigration system as I can on my own.” The result, intimated by White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer last week, is a “very significant” executive action to be unveiled by the end of the summer. If reports of the contents of the order are credible, not only will the action fail to “fix” America’s immigration

The current Ebola outbreak scaring medical professionals the world over and spreading at never-before-seen rates began as far back as January, and has been blamed on the consumption of bat soup. Additionally, one of Liberia´s highest-profile doctors treating the disease, Dr. Samuel Brisbane, died over the weekend from it. He was at least the second physician in that country

If an Israeli high-level official were caught on a hot mic candidly commenting on Secretary of State John Kerry’s ill-fated act of Israel-Hamas peacemaking, he might call it “a hell of a diplomatic foray.” Kerry was caught sarcastically describing the Israeli offensive into Gaza as “a hell of a pinpoint operation” during his round of Sunday-show interviews two weeks ago, before telling his aide over the phone, “We’ve got to get over there,” and “It’s crazy to be sitting around.” Kerry’s belief in himself as the Indispensable Man is touchingly quaint. ABORTION REMAINS legal in the United States, but states such as Texas are erecting legal impediments before clinics that perform the procedure. In effect, 40 years after the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade established the right to first-trimester abortion, pro-life groups and lawmakers are negating its effects. Last year, lawmakers in Texas forced through legislation that amounts to a frontal assault on the state’s abortion providers. More than 40 clinics around the state performed the procedure legally and safely when the law took effect a year ago. Today fewer than half of those clinics are still in business
