Desperately looking to fire up their base, Democrats are on the hunt for the next Todd Akin — a loose-talking Republican candidate who can be cast as being so far outside of the mainstream that they tarnish the GOP’s image and dampen its chances of taking over the Senate. “We know this is the Democrats’ playbook and we know that the media will play along with it,” said Kevin Madden, a GOP strategist who worked on Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. “It’s important that Republican candidates don’t allow their races to become some proxy fight over something another candidate said

Anyone who has made even a passing glance at the Israeli media in the past few days will have noticed the incredible chorus of criticism being directed at John Kerry right now. The secretary of state has been lambasted by all sides for his apparent failure in attempts to negotiate a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Here´s a small selection of the nasty things being said. On Monday, Israel HaYom, a Sheldon Adelson-owned free daily, published the following from Prof. Ron Breiman on its English-language Web site. Like a blind person groping for the ladder to climb down from the roof

When first lady Pat Nixon accompanied her husband to Beijing on his famous 1972 trip, she toured the zoo there and was much taken with the giant pandas that she saw. The species lives in the wild only in China and was rarely seen in captivity outside of that nation. In conversation with Zhou Enlai at a state dinner that evening, she enthused about the pandas. An engaging man, he immediately offered to make a gift of two pandas to the United States. (In exchange, the United States government sent over two musk oxen.) Only two months later, Ling-Ling and

A man was under arrest and another on the run Monday as authorities cleared more than a dozen marijuana fields complete with a sophisticated irrigation system in Polk County, according to various reports. A deer hunter on Saturday stumbled across the fields off Old Highway 35 near Goodrich, about 70 miles north of Houston. More than 40,000 marijuana plants have been recovered so far, with many more still to go, Chief Deputy Bryan Lyons from Polk County Sheriff´s Office told Polk County Today. The Montgomery County Police Reporter said teams from several area agencies were pulling up the plants and

The Internal Revenue Service is the House of Representatives’ public enemy No. 1. The agency has quietly admitted that it has lost emails for seven employees at the center of the agency’s targeting of conservative groups, including the former employee at the heart of the scandal, Lois Lerner. The admission of a loss of records during the course of a congressional investigation hints at either gross bureaucratic negligence or a federal agency gone legally astray — perhaps both. However, Congress may be barking up the wrong tree in its search for answers. Currently, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has

Thousands of people have spent vast sums of money installing eco-friendly solar panels but most will have probably had them fitted facing the wrong way, according to energy experts. The solar power industry is being urged to reconsider its approach to installing panels after one of the UK’s leading experts, Professor Ralph Gottshalg of Loughborough University says too many solar panels are facing in the wrong direction. Professor Gottshalg said Germany has too many solar panels which means that its grid is disrupted on sunny Summer lunchtimes with a flood of solar power so cheap it has to be almost given away.

Mitt Romney has used a social media platform to share pictures of a recent family vacation he and his wife Ann took with five of their 22 grandchildren. The Romney clan undertook what the former presidential candidate describes as a ´family tradition´ of hiking through the American West. ´My Mom and Dad began the tradition, showing their grandchildren the majesty of our country and teaching them about the sacrifices and character of the pioneers,´ Romney wrote. Along the way, he says, the Romneys taught their newest members a bit about their ancestry and their ties to the settlement of the

In the world of medical journals, Richard Norris is Mick Jagger. Horribly disfigured after a shotgun accident blew off half his face, the 39-year-old underwent one of the most complex face transplants in history, receiving teeth, a jaw and even a tongue from a donor. The 36-hour hour operation was extremely controversial - it was elective surgery, and Norris only had a 50 percent chance of survival - but the result was not only a new life for him, but a groundbreaking new study for doctors learning to treat soldiers and other victims of severe facial injuries. ´A drop of

A man wanted on child molestation charges in California who was working in a Greenwich Village smoke shop shot and wounded two federal marshals and a New York City police detective on Monday afternoon before they fired back, killing him, the police said. Moments before, all had been calm among the stacks of bongs and blown-glass pipes in Smoking Culture, a tiny store at 177 West Fourth Street, nestled along the causeway of tattoo parlors, erotic shops and bars offering early happy hour — a stretch that can call to mind the Times Square of old. Border surge puts Obama legacy

After two years of playing offense, immigrant rights groups suddenly and unexpectedly find themselves playing political defense, pushing back against proposals to speed up deportations of people surging across the border illegally even while advocates plead with the White House to take politically risky executive action to halt deportations in the interior. The advocates say they have “an audience of one” — President Obama, who for his career in Washington, stretching back to his days as a senator, has tantalized them with promises of action and even delivered some victories, but at times has seemed a reluctant partner.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s anti- Semitism is getting the better of him. Once again, the Turkish prime minister has trotted out the Hitler analogy in relation to Israel and what it has done in Gaza. “They curse Hitler morning and night,” he said of the Israelis. “However, now their barbarism has surpassed even Hitler’s.” Erdogan’s Hitler fetish is both revolting and inaccurate. Hitler murdered an estimated 6 million Jews, not to mention millions of Poles, Russians, Gypsies and, as a group, homosexuals; the Israelis have killed in the current Gaza operation more than 1,000 Palestinians. JERUSALEM — Israel will press its air and ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday, preparing his country for a longer and bloodier campaign and dashing hopes that the three-week-old conflict would end soon. Rebuffing appeals from President Obama, the United Nations and others for an immediate cease-fire, Netanyahu said in a televised address, “We will not finish the mission, we will not finish the operation, without neutralizing the tunnels” through which Hamas fighters have sought to infiltrate Israel. The tunnels, he said, “have the sole purpose of destroying our citizens, killing our children.”

Even as they grapple with an immigration crisis at the border, White House officials are making plans to act before November´s mid-term elections to grant work permits to potentially millions of immigrants who are in this country illegally, allowing them to stay in the United States without threat of deportation, according to advocates and lawmakers in touch with the administration. Such a large-scale move on immigration could scramble election-year politics and lead some conservative Republicans to push for impeachment proceedings against President Barack Obama, a prospect White House officials have openly discussed.

A federal court ruled Monday that the existence of a cross at Ground Zero does not violate the Constitution, slamming the appeal filed by the secular activist group American Atheists. The famous cross, formed by two intersecting beams left standing after the 9/11 attacks, has been a powerful spiritual symbol for many since and even during the tragedy. Frank Silecchia discovered the cross while helping recover bodies from the site. “It was a sign,” he later said. ”a sign God hadn’t deserted us.” American Atheists felt differently.
