The House and Senate Veterans´ Affairs committee chairmen have reached a deal on legislation that will address problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), aides to both sides confirmed to CBS News. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., are expected to outline the deal at a news conference Monday. The two lawmakers released a statement Sunday saying they "made significant progress on legislation to make the VA more accountable and recruit more doctors, nurses and other health care professionals." If Congress is going to address the child immigration crisis on the US-Mexico border before its five-week summer recess, this would be the last week to act. On Sunday, Texas Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar and Texas Sen. John Cornyn were both on ABC´s "This Week," pitching their solution to the child migrant crisis. Senator Cronyn said he expects the House of Representatives to offer a "skinnied-down" emergency funding bill in response to President Obama's $3.7 billion request (Snip) The Cornyn-Cuellar proposal would change the law so that Central American minors are treated the same as Mexican and Canadian minors are now

A North Carolina mayor on Sunday was just a few miles away from finishing his 273-mile walk to Washington to draw attention to the closing of his small town’s local hospital and the plights of other rural facilities caught in financial bind created largely by ObamaCare, a changing economy and less federal funding. “We’re almost there,” Belhaven Mayor Adam O’Neal, a Republican, said as he reached northern Virginia ahead of an approaching thunderstorm. “We’re going to make it.” The mayor and others argue that an increasing number of small, rural hospitals have been shuttered since ObamaCare was signed into law in

Well Being: Melting that
old advice about ice
Philadelphia Inquirer, by Art Carey    Original Article

For decades, the standard method for treating injuries was RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Everyone from Little League coaches to pro sports trainers knows icing is a sure way to reduce swelling, inflammation and pain, and speed healing. That has been the conventional wisdom. Now comes Gary Reinl, with 40 years of experience in sports, fitness, and rehab, with an iconoclastic message. In his self-published book ICED!, Reinl argues that icing is not only wrong - "an illusionary treatment" - but also counterproductive and harmful. "There´s not a shred of evidence that icing is helpful," Reinl said.

NSA losing interest in deal for Snowden

The Obama administration is increasingly less inclined to make a deal to allow Edward Snowden to come back to the United States, according to a top National Security Agency official. "As time goes on, the utility for us of having that conversation becomes less," NSA No. 2 Rick Ledgett said this weekend at Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, according to Politico. "It´s been over a year since he had access to our networks and our information so the need for us to understand that greater level of detail is lesser and lesser." The comment could point to increasing difficulty for Snowden and

Albany, NY - Two U.S. legislators on Sunday urged the government to study whether American passenger jets should be equipped with devices protecting them against missiles like the one that brought down a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine and projectiles fired near Tel Aviv´s airport. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Steve Israel are asking the Department of Homeland Security, Defense Department and Federal Aviation Administration to consider technologies that would shield commercial aircraft. A government study should include specific recommendations on the best technology needed to combat both shoulder-fired and

Unions weep: After becoming RTW

Hey, do you remember when Michigan shocked the nation and became a right to work state in 2012? That was supposed to usher in the end of the world, at least in the view of union leaders and their Democrat water carriers. As Thomas Lifson reminds us at The American Thinker, the predictions were nigh on to apocalyptic. “There will be blood, there will be repercussions,” State Democratic Rep. Douglas Geiss, speaking on the House floor on Tuesday, warned ahead of the votes. And of course, there were predictions of disaster for the “little guy” as ruthless bosses would exploit the defenseless

How Nicky and Willy could

Washington Post, by Graham Allison    Original Article

One hundred years ago this week, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany exchanged a series of telegrams to try to stop the rush to a war that neither of them wanted. They signed their notes “Nicky” and “Willy.” Cousins who vacationed together, hunted together and enjoyed dressing up in the uniforms of each other’s military officers when sailing on their yachts, these two great-great-grandsons of Paul I of Russia wrote to each other in English, affirming their mutual interests and outlining an agreement that would have resolved the crisis on terms acceptable to both rulers.

Emphasizing the need for “an immediate, unconditional humanitarian ceasefire,” President Barack Obama talked by phone Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House said. The discussion came on the same day that attempts at extending a 12-hour ceasefire in fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip came undone, with both sides blaming the other. Secretary of State John Kerry has been pressing the two sides to halt the fighting that has claimed more than 1,100 lives, most of them Palestinian. Detroit not alone in shutting

Detroit has drawn fire from all over the world for shutting off water to customers delinquent on their bills, but the city isn´t unique. Cities across the country do it also. In Michigan, Hamtramck, Warren, Pontiac, Eastpointe, Romulus and other cities have shut off delinquent customers as a way to improve collections. Elsewhere, so have other big cities such as Baltimore and St. Louis. (Snip) "If you never shut the water off for anybody, those people who continue to pay have to shoulder the entire cost of a system that is servicing a lot of customers that aren´t paying. That's not a sustainable business model."

In 2012, four years after sort-of-stumping-but-not-really for her mother’s presidential campaign, Chelsea Clinton sat down for a lengthy, laudatory profile for Vogue. “Historically, I deliberately tried to lead a private life in the public eye,” she said. “And now I am trying to lead a purposefully public life.” Last April, Clinton told Fast Company magazine much the same thing. As she also did with NBC’s Brian Williams, who interviewed Clinton after she was hired by the network as a “special correspondent” — albeit one with no journalism experience. Her starting salary: $600,000 a year. “For most of my life I did deliberately

Let’s put it in context: If John Walsh had plagiarized while working in the newsroom at the Daily Inter Lake, he would have been sent packing. That’s because credibility is the gold standard for a newspaper or any other news gathering organization. Plagiarism — taking credit for someone else’s words — is at its root another form of lying, and a newspaper has no credibility if it tolerates lying. Whether the same standard applies in the Senate is up for debate. A story in the New York Times last week demonstrated conclusively that Sen. Walsh had plagiarized large portions of his 2007 master’s thesis at the Army War College in

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., warned that the extension of nuclear talks with Iran, which freed up $2.8 billion in frozen oil export revenues for Tehran, means that more money will be funneled to militants in the Gaza strip even as the U.S. works to conclude a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Rogers, in an interview on CBS´ "Face the Nation" Sunday, said Iranian funds help supply Hamas with weapons. "That´s what´s so frustrating with the administration," he said "All of this works together. You can´t just pick and choose one particular region; it has to work in concert. Former presidential nominee Mitt Romney would win the popular vote if a rematch of the 2012 election against President Obama were held today, a CNN/ORC poll has revealed. According to the poll, if the 2012 election were held again today, Romney would receive 53% of the popular vote, and Mr. Obama would receive 44%, CNN reported. Obama beat Romney 51%-47% in the actual election. The poll said, however, that the former Massachusetts governor would lose against Hillary Clinton by double digits in a hypothetical election. Cairo - Egypt´s army said Sunday it has destroyed 13 more tunnels connecting the Sinai Peninsula to the Gaza Strip, taking to 1,639 the overall number it has laid waste to. Cairo has poured troops into the peninsula to counter a rising insurgency since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year, and its security operation involves the destruction of these tunnels. The Palestinian militant group Hamas, which is the main power in Gaza, reportedly uses the tunnels to smuggle arms, food and money into the blockaded coastal enclave. Israel has been waging a military offensive on Gaza since

Hamas has tried desperately to achieve a strategic win against Israel during the last two weeks, from firing 2,000 rockets on Israeli cities to embarking on suicidal tunnel infiltrations into Israeli territory. (snip) This week, however, the United States made two ill-informed decisions that strengthen Hamas, isolate Israel and point to a severe misreading of the Middle East geopolitical map: an FAA ban on flights to and from Israel, and pushing for a flawed ceasefire deal that would let Hamas retain part of its terror tunnel infrastructure. The U.S. government thankfully reversed the FAA ban, and now should let Israel destroy

In the coming days, Israel will likely need a massive re-supply of military goods of all kinds. It is then when Obama’s real intentions will be exposed for Israel to see. President Obama is the master of Double-Speak, saying one thing and meaning the exact opposite. Remember how Obama promised, “You can keep your doctor if you like him,” and how it turns out that you can’t keep him because Obamacare won’t pay him? Given Obama’s track record of betrayal of Israel, his hollow recital of “Israel has the right to defend herself,” might actually have a doublespeak meaning as well - that "Israel has the right to defend herself", but without any
