Barack Obama, Benjamin

Emphasizing the need for “an immediate, unconditional humanitarian ceasefire,” President Barack Obama talked by phone Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House said. The discussion came on the same day that attempts at extending a 12-hour ceasefire in fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip came undone, with both sides blaming the other. Secretary of State John Kerry has been pressing the two sides to halt the fighting that has claimed more than 1,100 lives, most of them Palestinian. Detroit not alone in shutting

Detroit has drawn fire from all over the world for shutting off water to customers delinquent on their bills, but the city isn´t unique. Cities across the country do it also. In Michigan, Hamtramck, Warren, Pontiac, Eastpointe, Romulus and other cities have shut off delinquent customers as a way to improve collections. Elsewhere, so have other big cities such as Baltimore and St. Louis. (Snip) "If you never shut the water off for anybody, those people who continue to pay have to shoulder the entire cost of a system that is servicing a lot of customers that aren´t paying. That's not a sustainable business model."

How a ‘weird’ Chelsea Clinton is

In 2012, four years after sort-of-stumping-but-not-really for her mother’s presidential campaign, Chelsea Clinton sat down for a lengthy, laudatory profile for Vogue. “Historically, I deliberately tried to lead a private life in the public eye,” she said. “And now I am trying to lead a purposefully public life.” Last April, Clinton told Fast Company magazine much the same thing. As she also did with NBC’s Brian Williams, who interviewed Clinton after she was hired by the network as a “special correspondent” — albeit one with no journalism experience. Her starting salary: $600,000 a year. “For most of my life I did deliberately

There’s no valid excuse

Let’s put it in context: If John Walsh had plagiarized while working in the newsroom at the Daily Inter Lake, he would have been sent packing. That’s because credibility is the gold standard for a newspaper or any other news gathering organization. Plagiarism — taking credit for someone else’s words — is at its root another form of lying, and a newspaper has no credibility if it tolerates lying. Whether the same standard applies in the Senate is up for debate. A story in the New York Times last week demonstrated conclusively that Sen. Walsh had plagiarized large portions of his 2007 master’s thesis at the Army War College in

Rep.Mike Rogers: Gaza conflict

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., warned that the extension of nuclear talks with Iran, which freed up $2.8 billion in frozen oil export revenues for Tehran, means that more money will be funneled to militants in the Gaza strip even as the U.S. works to conclude a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Rogers, in an interview on CBS´ "Face the Nation" Sunday, said Iranian funds help supply Hamas with weapons. "That´s what´s so frustrating with the administration," he said "All of this works together. You can´t just pick and choose one particular region; it has to work in concert. Former presidential nominee Mitt Romney would win the popular vote if a rematch of the 2012 election against President Obama were held today, a CNN/ORC poll has revealed. According to the poll, if the 2012 election were held again today, Romney would receive 53% of the popular vote, and Mr. Obama would receive 44%, CNN reported. Obama beat Romney 51%-47% in the actual election. The poll said, however, that the former Massachusetts governor would lose against Hillary Clinton by double digits in a hypothetical election. Mrs. Clinton would earn 55% of the vote, with Mr. Romney at 42%.

Egypt army destroys 13 more Gaza tunnels

Cairo - Egypt´s army said Sunday it has destroyed 13 more tunnels connecting the Sinai Peninsula to the Gaza Strip, taking to 1,639 the overall number it has laid waste to. Cairo has poured troops into the peninsula to counter a rising insurgency since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year, and its security operation involves the destruction of these tunnels. The Palestinian militant group Hamas, which is the main power in Gaza, reportedly uses the tunnels to smuggle arms, food and money into the blockaded coastal enclave. Israel has been waging a military offensive on Gaza since

Hamas has tried desperately to achieve a strategic win against Israel during the last two weeks, from firing 2,000 rockets on Israeli cities to embarking on suicidal tunnel infiltrations into Israeli territory. (snip) This week, however, the United States made two ill-informed decisions that strengthen Hamas, isolate Israel and point to a severe misreading of the Middle East geopolitical map: an FAA ban on flights to and from Israel, and pushing for a flawed ceasefire deal that would let Hamas retain part of its terror tunnel infrastructure. The U.S. government thankfully reversed the FAA ban, and now should let Israel destroy

In the coming days, Israel will likely need a massive re-supply of military goods of all kinds. It is then when Obama’s real intentions will be exposed for Israel to see. President Obama is the master of Double-Speak, saying one thing and meaning the exact opposite. Remember how Obama promised, “You can keep your doctor if you like him,” and how it turns out that you can’t keep him because Obamacare won’t pay him? Given Obama’s track record of betrayal of Israel, his hollow recital of “Israel has the right to defend herself,” might actually have a doublespeak meaning as well - that "Israel has the right to defend herself", but without any

The flotilla being organized, called the "Freedom Flotilla II," is the successor of the Mavi Marmara flotilla that sought to break Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip in May 2010. The new flotilla is being organized by the Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief" (Insani Yardim Vakfi), otherwise known as the IHH, (Snip) Israel and the US have both labelled the IHH a terrorist organization.

The president is on pace to double the 104 days he spent on the links during his first term. While many criticize the president for making birdies instead of policy, former Mayor Michael Bloomberg has defended the habit. “They criticize him for going and playing golf with people who he’s got

Despite so many of Britain’s streets being packed with history, it can be hard to imagine what was happening on them 100 years ago. But these composite images show how places across London and further afield looked during the First World War compared to now. In one photo, German prisoners of war are seen being marched on their way to Southend Pier in Essex accompanied by guards in 1914. This archive image from the war has been matched with a present-day photo of the seafront in the sunshine, taken earlier this month. Further up the east coast, wartime bomb damage

The myth of botched executions

On Wednesday, the State of Arizona executed Joseph Wood. The left wing media immediately jumped on the case, calling it a “botched execution.” To begin with, the execution wasn’t botched. He’s dead, isn’t he? Wood was convicted of two counts of first degree ,urder. The murders occurred in 1989. Wood was convicted and sentenced to death in 1991. He spent 23 years on death row while tax payer funded lawyers cranked out every strategy possible to stop or delay his execution. The botching was not the execution. The botching was that it took 23 years. There was never any doubt about Wood’s guilt. He killed the father of his ex-girlfriend

Bush had to cancel his appearance at the three-day Ameriprise Financial conference at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center because of an injured knee.
