The myth of botched executions
Washington Times, by Judson Phillips    Original Article

On Wednesday, the State of Arizona executed Joseph Wood. The left wing media immediately jumped on the case, calling it a “botched execution.” To begin with, the execution wasn’t botched. He’s dead, isn’t he? Wood was convicted of two counts of first degree ,urder. The murders occurred in 1989. Wood was convicted and sentenced to death in 1991. He spent 23 years on death row while tax payer funded lawyers cranked out every strategy possible to stop or delay his execution. The botching was not the execution. The botching was that it took 23 years. There was never any doubt about Wood’s guilt. He killed the father of his ex-girlfriend

Under new rules, Muslim inmates

The inmate in blue jail-issue scrubs turned toward Mecca and sang the midday call to prayer heard at Muslim places of worship around Southern California on the last Friday of Ramadan. About 80 other inmates, many wearing traditional caps called kufis with their jail uniforms, sat in the pews of a chapel in Men´s Central Jail during the service led by a volunteer imam. Before sunrise, the inmates had consumed a breakfast of eggs, peanut butter and jelly, a banana and milk that conformed to Muslim dietary rules. Now they were fasting until their evening meal, which they would eat

Clinton makes splash at Boston

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton preached bipartisanship, plugged her book, avoided talk of a 2016 White House run, and even joked about her role as the last-minute fill-in speaker for former President George W. Bush during a convention in Boston yesterday. “The last time a Clinton replaced a Bush, things worked out pretty well,” Clinton told the crowd. Bush had to cancel his appearance at the three-day Ameriprise Financial conference at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center because of an injured knee. In a 50-minute appearance, Clinton — his hired replacement — warned that America’s image at home and

US Less Safe Than Several Years

ABC News, by Mike Levine    Original Article

The United States is now less safe than it was years ago, in part because a brutal terrorist group has been able to gain power in Iraq after the post-war government there "blew it," a top U.S. intelligence official said Saturday. The frank words came from Lt. Gen Michael Flynn, the outgoing head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, at a national security forum in Aspen, Colorado, where over several days top current and former counterterrorism officials warned of several simultaneous threats to the United States emanating from the Middle East and Africa. Asked if the United States is generally now

In today’s Morning Jolt, I asked readers for any long-forgotten references to National Review in popular culture. The other day in the office, other NRO-niks and I tried to come up with all the movies and television shows that have referenced or mentioned National Review Annie Hall, obviously; spider-killing is proud tradition at NR. Tom Selleck picked up a copy of National Review in an episode of Magnum, P.I. Robin Williams’s Genie briefly imitated William F. Buckley in Aladdin. NBC’s Community offered a bizarre reference, although perhaps the magazine needs a “Make-Out Meter.” Readers already offered three we missed.

Rep. Steve Scalise, the incoming House Majority Whip, said Sunday he will stay in Washington until Congress agrees to an emergency spending plan for the border-immigration crisis, but declined to say whether he will cancel the lower chamber’s August recess. “I’m going to stay until it’s done,” said Scalise, R-La., the Tea Party-backed lawmaker who in June became the No. 3 Republican in the GOP-led House after Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost his re-election bid. In an interview with “Fox News Sunday,” Scalise also laid out House Republicans´ legislative agenda before the November elections, including a vow to agree to

Sunday on CNN´s "Fareed Zakaria GPS," former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discussed the United States standing in the world and said former President George W. Bush is the president who made her "proud to be an American." Clinton then seemingly took a shot at Obama´s current lack of direction in world leadership. "We have to go back out and sell ourselves," Clinton said. "It is not to be taken for granted. What do we stand for and, how do we intend to lead and manage? How do we try to enlist the rest of the world in this struggle between cooperation and order and conflict and disorder which is really at the root of so much

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Hamas is already violating its own cease-fire that it proposed Sunday morning. “Hamas doesn’t even accept it’s own cease-fire. It’s continuing to fire at us as we speak," he said Sunday on CNN´s "State of the Union." Hamas announced a 24-hour cease-fire with Israel beginning at 2 p.m. local time. But Netanyahu said that Hamas hadn´t abided by its own announcement, saying it has not ceased in its campaign against the Israel on Sunday. “Hamas is simply continuing all its operations, and Israel will not let this terror operation decide when it’s convenient for them and not

Every now and then we are reminded by events that providence has saved our civilization from disaster. There was, for example, reminds my friend Narciso, the Bojinka plot In which Ramzi Yousef and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed planned to assassinate Pope John Paul II, bomb 11 passenger planes, and crash a plane into CIA headquarters. A chemical fire in one of the plotter’s kitchens disrupted those plans. (Khalid went on to commit other atrocities -- including planning 9/11 -- but providence cannot always protect us.) Mahmud Raoi, Afghanistan - Taliban fighters are scoring early gains in several strategic areas near the capital this summer, inflicting heavy casualties and casting new doubt on the ability of Afghan forces to contain the insurgency as the United States moves to complete its withdrawal of combat troops, according to Afghan officials and local elders. The Taliban have found success beyond their traditional strongholds in the rural south and are now dominating territory near crucial highways and cities that surround Kabul, the capital, in strategic provinces like Kapisa and Nangarhar. Their advance has gone unreported because most

State Sen. Wendy Davis is making a huge mistake in her campaign as the Democratic nominee for Texas governor. And if she continues doing it, she just might find her potential voters staying home in droves on Election Day. The campaign apparently has decided that Davis has to distance herself from President Barack Obama — avoid being seen with him, resist talking about the issues he has championed even if she supports them, and certainly not ask the president’s help in getting out the vote in the Lone Star State. The obvious reason for this flawed strategy is that Obama is hugely unpopular in the so-called “red”

When the public is more afraid of the cops than the bad guys, the system is broken. There’s reason for some law-abiding Americans to worry about their pocketbook becoming lighter after a visit from the lawman. Bonnie and Clyde never pretended to be anything but robbers. A 64-year-old Texas woman, for example, was accused of being a drug dealer simply because she was carrying cash in her pickup truck from the sale of her land. The cops took her money, though she had never been convicted of a crime in her life. She had to sue in federal court to get all of her money back. Hamas killed hundreds of children in the construction of its extensive tunnel network, built partly to carry out attacks on children across the Gaza border in Israel. That report--confirmed by Hamas itself--emerged in 2012, not from the Israeli government, but the sympathetic Journal of Palestine Studies, in an article that otherwise celebrated the secret tunnel system as a symbol of Palestinian resistance to the Israeli "siege" of the Gaza Strip. The article, "Gaza´s Tunnel Phenomenon: The Unintended Dynamics of Israel´s Siege," was published in the Summer 2012 edition of the Journal by Nicholas Pelham, who writes for the Economist and

When The Times of Israel’s Avi Issacharoff first reported the content of John Kerry’s ceasefire proposal on Friday afternoon, I wondered if something had gotten lost in translation. It seemed inconceivable that the American secretary of state would have drafted an initiative that, as a priority, did not require the dismantling of Hamas’s rocket arsenal and network of tunnels dug under the Israeli border. Yet the reported text did not address these issues at all, nor call for the demilitarization of Gaza. It seemed inconceivable that the secretary’s initiative would specify the need to address Hamas’s demands for a lifting of
