After their 21-year-old daughter Kristina was killed in a tragic accident last September, Sandra and David Chesterman were beyond distraught. Searching through her apartment, they found something unusual for a young woman to have in her makeup bag: a bucket list. Kristina, an aspiring nurse, had been riding her bike near her home in Chico, California, on September 22, 2013, when her life was tragically snuffed out by an alleged drunk driver. Below is a memorial to her spirit.

The grave of King Richard III, immortalised by Shakespeare as one of history´s great villains, was opened up to the public on Saturday in central England. The remains of the infamous ruler were found in 2012 under a car park in the city of Leicester. Around a hundred visitors were on hand to watch city mayor Peter Soulsby cut the ribbon on the £4 million ($6.8 million, 5 million euro) new visitor centre at the discovery site. Early arrivals at the building, in an abandoned school close to Richard´s grave, were able to examine a replica of his skeleton made

New York Times: Legalize marijuana

The New York Times’ editorial board on Saturday called on the federal government to legalize marijuana. Citing alcohol prohibition, social costs and states’ movements, the board argued “after a great deal of discussion” that “the balance falls squarely on the side of national legalization.” “We considered whether it would be best for Washington to hold back while the states continued experimenting with legalizing medicinal uses of marijuana, reducing penalties, or even simply legalizing all use. Nearly three-quarters of the states have done one of these,” the editorial said. “But that would leave their citizens vulnerable to the whims of whoever happens

Earlier this year, Chinese almost-billionaire Liu Yiqian purchased a Chenghua Meiyintang "chicken cup" at an auction in Hong Kong, reportedly paying more than $30 million for the 500-year-old piece. The sale made headlines for several reasons: • The cup is super old and precious. • He paid more than $30 million! • Liu Yiqian drank out of it. Yeah, that happened. When Liu Yiqian bought the cup earlier this month, he sipped tea from it, and the pictures caused a bit of a commotion. (Tweet) When asked about it, he told China Real Time that taking the drink was a

The lesson comes too late for the United States, but there it is: after the US abandoned its military base and its foreign policy influence in Iceland in 2006, both Russia and China are now showing how keen they are to fill the void and take advantage of the growing strategic importance of the island nation at the edge of the Arctic Circle. It is more than just tiny Iceland’s rich fisheries and potential undersea mineral wealth that is attracting both the largest country in the world and the most populous. In April last year, China agreed a free trade

More Turkish hypocrisy and absurdity on display. Yesterday was other-worldly, watching the sick march of hypocrisy on display at the U.N. for the vote in the General Assembly to grant “Palestine” nonmember state status. Of course, “Palestine” already declared independence in 1988 and that declaration was recognized by almost all of the 138 countries that voted “yes” yesterday. What was other worldly was watching the speech of the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. I watched it live. I haven’t been able to find a link to the text, but it was unreal, talking about the inalienable rights of peoples to

‘We Are All Hamas!´: Thousands

LONDON, United Kingdom – It was billed as the biggest protest in London since the Stop the War Coalition marched against the invasion of Iraq. In the end the predictions of one million protesters proved to be fantasy, and some campaigners openly expressed their love for Gaza-based terrorist outfit Hamas. The crowd assembled at an empty Israeli Embassy, as the diplomats do not work on Saturdays, and marched towards an empty Parliament, which is currently on recess. This was the perfect analogy for the hollowness of London´s Gaza (or pro-Hamas) protest this weekend. Many of the protesters managed to walk

Dear Reader (including the many new anti-Semitic and just plain bat-guano crazy people who’ve wandered into my life in recent days), Last night I said on Twitter: "The Great Liberal Forgetting of Jonathan Gruber begins...Now". Forgetting may not be the right word. (Snip) As NR put it in an editorial, “It’s an odd world in which judges are accused of usurping the role of Congress for ruling that the executive branch must follow the text of a law Congress wrote.” Seriously, who knows what will happen if the courts start adhering to the law as written? That’s like saying the IRS should be politically neutral. Madness!

WASHINGTON — A freshman congressman from Florida erroneously lectured two US government officials about things “your country” should do — under the mistaken belief they were from India. The officials, Nisha Biswal and Arun Kumar, were both Americans representing the State and Commerce departments at a hearing of a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee. But the Republican lawmaker, Curt Clawson — who just weeks ago replaced Rep. Tray Radel, who quit Congress in January after he got caught buying cocaine — seemed convinced they were Indian officials. “I am familiar with your country; I love your country,” he said. “Anything I

Democratic House Leader Steny Hoyer was on MSNBC this morning and told a somewhat skeptical Steve Kornacki that far from what conventional wisdom suggests, the Democrats will do very well in the midterms and could actually take back the House. And he credited this in part to how badly the Republicans could screw it up along the way. Hoyer said that this year, Democrats are running great candidates and the party is out-raising the GOP by a pretty good margin. But that’s not all that gave him confidence for the fall. He said, “My experience over the last three or

For years, though more so in the past month, Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have been the focus of outlandish discussions and debates between millions of people, while many have never even visited that beautiful colourful area of the world, or lack the requisite knowledge to engage in decent analysis. Shining examples of that come from television´s comedic current affairs talk show hosts Jon Stewart and Bill Maher. A lot of people don’t seem to realise that between the photos, the speeches, the talks and debates around the world, there are people, who have lived in that small piece of

SAN ANTONIO — Both deluge and drought bring snakes out where they´re likely to cross paths with humans, something both the snakes and the people usually don´t enjoy. Because our weather often swings between bone dry and sudden saturation, we´re likely to be surprised by the slithering creatures. Usually, it´s best just to let them go on their way. Andy Gluesenkamp, a Texas Parks and Wildlife State herpetologist, said flooding displaces snakes from their homes and, from there, they seek dry land. “Certainly when we have flooding, you can experience situations where you have displaced wildlife,” Gluesenkamp said.

In light of Heller, McDonald, and their progeny, there is no longer any basis on which this Court can conclude that the District of Columbia’s total ban on the public carrying of ready-to-use handguns outside the home is constitutional under any level of scrutiny. Therefore, the Court finds that the District of Columbia’s complete ban on the carrying of handguns in public is unconstitutional.

Hamas fired rockets at central Israel around 10 p.m. Saturday, making a mockery of a four-hour Israeli ceasefire extension that began two hours earlier. Meanwhile, Israel´s Diplomacy and Security Cabinet has voted to extend the ceasefire by a further 24 hours in response to UN requests, a security source told AFP on condition of anonymity. The truce will end on Sunday night at 9 p.m. Hamas for its part has rejected the ceasefire extension by Israel, demanding Israeli troops withdraw first. It was a mad dash to hug Hillary Clinton. But first, Sotomayor got the children fired up. “I need for you to do something right now,” she said, holding a microphone and standing among a hoard of kids wearing bright green t-shirts. “I need for you to jump up and down and say thank you for caring for me!” “On the count of

Hamas is, of course, claiming that it is “winning” in the current conflict with Israel. Unfortunately, not all of its claims can be easily shrugged off, thanks to its ruthlessness and its cynical abuse of the Palestinian people, and in no small part thanks to the international community’s willful blindness and worse. Ultimately, though, what Hamas has to say matters far less than what Israel achieves in this resort to force. And most Israelis seem well aware of that. Hamas is “winning,” for a start, because it doesn’t care who it kills in support of its declared goal of destroying Israel.

The Islamic State terrorist group, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), rose to prominence from the ashes of an al-Qaeda-affiliated group in 2013. Despite the extensive harm they have done to the people of Syria for more than a year, the United Nations is just now considering adding the terrorist group to their Syria war crimes list. When Stayc Lafean launched a small towing company last month, spending $5,000 to print her new business phone number on trucks and advertisements, the Colorado woman never imagined she would fall victim to "caller ID spoofing" -- a scam in which virtually untraceable parties use someone else´s number to disguise the identity of their own and inundate cell phones and land lines with relentless telemarketing robo-calls. While federal law prohibits caller ID spoofing "for the purposes of defrauding or otherwise causing harm," so-called non-harmful spoofing isn´t necessarily illegal. Sirens continued to sound in Beersheba, Ashdod, Ashkelon, and the Gaza frontier communities late Saturday. One Israeli was seriously injured by a mortar that exploded in the Eshkol regional council late Saturday. The forum of ministers met late Saturday night, even as Hamas rejected a continuation of the cease-fire and began again firing on Israel. The wider question on the table was how to ensure that in any longer cease-fire agreement Israel would
