The sunny highs of July are numbered, with a dramatic drop in temperature next week when a second polar blast hits large parts of the U.S. Temperatures are forecast to be up to 20 degrees below average for this time of year, with some places experiencing a chill more usual in the fall. A jet stream from polar regions will bring the unseasonable weather in on Sunday, with a band of thunderstorms leading it in Ohio and along the East Coast. The storms are likely to bring hail, strong winds, and a risk of tornadoes in and around the Ohio

She always arrives in an SUV, sometimes staying for a few hours, sometimes as long as a week--just so long as the lady of the house is away. And, thanks to the fact that the house in question--the palatial residence of Bill and Hillary Clinton--is protected by a squad of U.S. Secret Servicemen who are in on the deception, the attractive, busty blonde can time her arrivals and departures to within minutes of those of Mrs Clinton. [Snip] Given that Bill Clinton is ‘Eagle’ and Mrs Clinton is ‘Evergreen’, the special visitor was dubbed ‘Energiser’ in a rare moment of

Shortly after Jared Lee Loughner shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as she met with constituents at an Arizona strip mall, FBI agents rushed to his Tucson residence, fearing it was rigged to explode. Technicians with bomb-sniffing dogs found the front door locked and blocked by furniture, so they entered through the garage. After searching the kitchen, front room and hallway, they arrived at Loughner´s bedroom, where dogs focused on a small safe behind the door. Using radiographs to peer inside before opening it, they detected bomb-making components — batteries, a circuit board, wires and a numeric keyboard system.

The rule for women´s costumes at Comic Con seems to be less is more. Scantily-clad cosplayers, dressed as Wonder Woman, Princess Leia and dozens of other fantasy characters, have become a fixture at pop culture convention. But, many women are saying that some of the fans who attend Comic Con are taking the fantasy too far. An informal survey found that one quarter of the women who attend conventions have been sexually harassed. Female fans complain they endure unwanted leering, groping and crude comments at the San Diego convention - which is the largest and most famous gathering of its kind

The children, - 15, 10 and seven, all siblings - were selling fruit to raise money for their church at a stand near Germantown and Allegheny Avenues, police said. Three others were injured, including the children´s mother, who was "fighting for her life," said Deputy Mayor Everett Gillison. One of the less attractive characteristics of the Anglo-Saxon powers is their post-war habit of betraying third world allies, whether they are Vietnamese Montagnards, Afghan interpreters or belong to one of several less well-known minorities that have paid a grim price for trusting Britain or America to reward their loyalty. The Kurds of Iraq are the latest to find themselves in the position of under-appreciated and betrayed allies. Grateful for the US-British-French no-fly-zone that kept Saddam’s forces out of Kurdistan after the 1991 Gulf War, the Kurds have long been the most pro-American and pro-British ethnic group in the entire region.

Bible Baptist Church in Carthage, Missouri is a small country church bursting with American pride. Old Glory is posted in the sanctuary. And every morning at summer youth camp, the teenagers pledge allegiance and sing the national anthem. Patriotic holidays are big doings at Bible Baptist. On Memorial Day, the church ladies put out quite a spread – fried chicken, potato salad. Veterans would wear their uniforms and the preacher would salute them during the morning worship service. “We are a very patriotic church,” Pastor Kent Hogan told me. “We love America. We love this country.” So it was not that

Israel and Hamas announced a 12-hour humanitarian cease fire in Gaza for Saturday, only hours after Israel´s security cabinet unanimously rejected U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry´s proposal for a temporary cease fire to allow indirect talks. The move also followed an escalation of deadly clashes Friday and the Israeli defense minister´s statement that Israel may significantly widen its ground operation in Gaza. In announcing late Friday that it would observe the "humanitarian window" from 8a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Israel said that during that time "we´ll continue to locate and neutralize terror tunnels." It also warned the military "shall

There are some subjects that are almost too large for literature, even for Tolstoy, who tried to answer the question “how should one live a moral life in an ethically imperfect world?” by following the fortunes of characters in his novel War and Peace. Some characters seek fame, others sensual gratification, a few — like Napoleon — pursue an egotistical sense of power. But altogether too many of the rest are content to gnaw their way through the world like insects, not only incapable of answering Tolstoy’s question but unable to even ask it. Some even want to meet God,

Representative Raul Grijalva (D., Ariz.) thinks that President Obama should pursue his immigration goals unilaterally, even if it hurts vulnerable Democrats in the 2014 midterms. “That’ll always be the case,” the Congressional Hispanic Caucus co-chair told National Review Online when asked if Democrats were still nervous that the border crisis had turned Obama’s expected orders into a political liability. “You’ll always have members whose political vulnerability they tie entirely to immigration,” Grijalva said. “We didn’t make progress when we were in the majority because we were being protective of those —

‘He who controls the past controls the future,” observed George Orwell. “He who controls the present controls the past.” This, in one pithy, symmetrical little maxim, has been the story of Obamacare from its conception to the present day. Since its official launch, in October of 2013, the architects and salesmen of our ill-conceived phalanx of reforms have been engaged in some of the most pronounced historical revisionism of the modern era — truth being subjugated to expedience; idealism being repackaged in the pathetic language of good intentions; and the past being tweaked at every tricky stage. Thus has the

There’s an insight into Secretary of State Kerry’s view of Israel in the New Republic’s reprise of the collapse of the Obama administration’s attempt last year to broker a peace with the Palestinian Arabs. It came when the secretary suddenly started lecturing Prime Minister Netanyahu about Indochina. “When I fought in Vietnam, I used to look at the faces of the local population and the looks they gave us,” Mr. Kerry said. “I’ll never forget it. It gave me clarity that we saw the situation in completely different ways.” “This isn’t Vietnam!” Mr. Netanyahu shouted, according to the account in

Tyson Foods Inc said it will discontinue operations at three of its factories which make processed meat products such as sausages and hot dogs, affecting about 950 people. The largest U.S. meat processor, which won the bidding war for Hillshire Brands Co in June, said the closures were not related to the acquisition. "The decision to close these plants was underway long before the (Hillshire) discussions began", Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson told Reuters. Tyson outbid Pilgrim´s Pride Corp with its $63 per share offer for Hillshire, valuing the Jimmy Dean sausages maker at $8.55 billion. The closures were due to changing

President Obama famously failed to act when warned that ISIS was preparing to mount an offensive in Western Iraq. This left ISIS free to conquer, with virtually no resistance, city after city in the defense of which American soldiers have shed blood. Now Obama is receiving new warnings, this time from the Kurds in Northern Iraq. In fact, according to the Washington Post, the Kurds are “pleading for U.S. military aid.” Unlike the Iraqi government, the Kurds possess a viable military that is prepared to fight ISIS. Indeed, they are fighting ISIS, and fairly effectively. However, the Kurds now have

Republican lawmakers are challenging the Obama administration over a newly announced plan to expand the use of U.S. military bases to house illegal immigrant children, warning that it will put a strain on troops and threaten military readiness. The Pentagon confirmed this week that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has approved a request from the Department of Health and Human Services to house an additional 5,000 minors at DOD facilities. The announcement has fueled concerns that what was initially described as a short-term measure is becoming an open-ended commitment. “It’s very evident that this is not a short-term solution,”

That is the difference between a parliamentary government and a separation-of-powers government," Norton said during a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing. Chicago - The Kansas Supreme Court on Friday overturned death sentences for two brothers convicted in the 2000 execution-style murder of four people on a snowy soccer field in Wichita, ruling that the trial judge erred in refusing to conduct separate penalty phases for the two men. Jonathan and Reginald Carr were sentenced to death in 2002. Their December 2000 crime spree, known as the Wichita Massacre, included the kidnapping of three men and two women in a home invasion that included rape and sexual humiliation. The five victims were shot in the head; one survived.

President Obama insists on flirting with impeachment even as House Republican leaders insist there’s no such possibility. Obama uses a passive-aggressive strategy that can be judged as a political maneuver, a personality disorder, or both. Secure in the knowledge that impeachment is not the same as removal from office, Mr. Obama brings up the topic on his own and with bold defiance. Martyrdom goes well with a Messiah complex and Mr. Obama’s speeches are a non-stop litany of depicting himself as a victim of Republicans. Already operating beyond the constitutional bounds of presidential power, Mr. Obama’s strategy is to push the bounds

Irbil, Iraq — Each day, Kurdish security forces in northern Iraq skirmish with fearsomely armed Islamic State militants along their new, nearly 650-mile border. The Kurds have held their own so far. But without new arms supplies or financial assistance, their fight is unsustainable, a senior Kurdish official said. Masrour Barzani, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s intelligence and security chief, described his forces as “overstretched.” In an interview this week, he called on the United States to provide direct military assistance to his semiautonomous region, which he said has been left to fight the extremists unaided.

Wouldn’t it be great if he said he wants to fix this tax imbalance in order to grow the economy faster and give U.S. businesses a leg up on the global scene? Couldn’t he just say that?
