The Times of Israel is liveblogging events as they unfold through Friday, the 18th day of Operation Protective Edge. Israel’s government and Hamas officials were considering a ceasefire offer advanced by US Secretary of State John Kerry. West Bank violence continued to escalate, with five Palestinians reported killed in riots. With the Gaza death toll said to pass 700, Israeli military sources said several hundred Hamas gunmen had been killed. The IDF death toll is 35. IDF-Hamas fighting in Gaza remains intensive, and rockets are still being fired into Israel, but foreign airlines are returning to Ben-Gurion airport.

Soon there will be three anti-Clinton books on the market, which is apparently enough to have gotten under the skin of Team Hillary. The First Family Detail by Ronald Kessler, set for release next month, will join Clinton, Inc. by the Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper and Blood Feud by Ed Klein on bookshelves. Yesterday we reported that Clinton, Inc. has shot up the charts and now both Halper and Klein’s books are outselling Hillary Clinton’s recent memoir Hard Choices. “With Klein, Halper and Kessler, we now have a Hat Trick of despicable actors concocting trashy nonsense,” Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill

House Republicans fear backlash

House Republicans are growing anxious about leaving town for the August recess without passing a border bill. Ahead of a pivotal conference meeting Friday morning, rank-and-file lawmakers are openly fretting about the questions they would face from constituents if they break from legislative work without taking action to address the surge of child migrants into the United States. Many argue that if they fail to pass a bill, even one that is a total nonstarter with Democrats, they’ll give President Obama five weeks of open airtime to pound them as do-nothing obstructionists. “It needs to be passed before we go

Moscow - Russia on Friday called the latest US accusations of Moscow´s involvement in the Ukrainian conflict a baseless "smear campaign" and said Washington bears responsibility for the bloodshed. "Due to the smear campaign against us that the US Administration has begun... we reject the unfounded public insinuations that US deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf is spreading on a daily basis," a statement by the Russian foreign ministry said. Harf on Thursday said that latest evidence suggests that Russian troops are firing artillery from within Russia on Ukrainian military across the border, while defence officials suggested that

First lady Michelle Obama called on donors Thursday evening to cut the “biggest, fattest” checks to the Democratic Party, warning that a failure to assist financially in the upcoming midterm elections could result in the death of “Hope and Change.” “[Y]es, there´s too much money in politics. There´s special interests that have too much influence. But they had all that money and all of that influence back in 2008 and 2012 - and we still won those elections,” the first lady said. “Nothing has changed.” However, she warned, Democratic turnout for midterm elections has historically been low. This cannot happen

Israel is leaning toward rejecting US Secretary of State John Kerry´s proposal for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, Channel 10 reported on Friday. Citing sources in the diplomatic-security cabinet that convened in Tel Aviv on Friday, Channel 10 said that Israel viewed Kerry´s bridging proposals as "a Qatari proposal with ornaments." Qatar has been accused by Israel of providing financing and political support to Hamas. According to Channel 10, senior Israeli ministers have ruled as "out of the question" a cease-fire in which the IDF would be prevented from fully rooting out the threat of underground tunnels built by

(Video) If you blink during the video, you might miss the moment an explosion destroys what is said to have been the tomb of Jonah, a key figure in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The first few frames show the revered shrine towering over its landscape. Then comes a sudden burst of dust, fire and smoke. Then, nothing. Militants with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, planted explosives around the tomb and detonated them remotely Thursday, civil defense officials there told CNN. The holy site is said to be the burial place of the prophet Jonah, who was

Professional football players can be suspended up to a year for marijuana, yet the Baltimore Ravens’ star running back was given a measly two-game suspension for brutally assaulting his bride-to-be in a video that’s gone viral. This is a thing that happened. A man in peak physical condition, possessing strength that would put the average person to shame, was caught on video dragging his unconscious, much smaller fiancée (now wife) by the hair out of an elevator at a casino in Atlantic City. You can watch it here. (Snip for video)What occurred prior has not been made public, but according

Congress is about to leave the nation´s capital for its traditional August recess. Since it´s an election year, the month back home is especially important to members of the House of Representatives. Re-election campaigns — and thus congressional careers — can be won or lost in August, so canceling the 30-day respite from doing the nation´s public business is the last thing congressmen in either party want to do. But, with thousands of illegal immigrants, including many unaccompanied minors, flooding the border in Texas, millions of Americans still unable to find jobs, the Middle East erupting, Iraq falling apart, Russia firing artillery

In our rolling conversation — rolling in more than one sense, because we’re aboard the rock-star bus — Dinesh makes a familiar point, but one that bears repeating: Capitalists are terrible at defending capitalism. They will defend it on grounds of efficiency, but not on grounds of morality or justice. We will lose capitalism, says Dinesh, unless we learn to defend it, rhetorically, against its enemies. You recall what the Marxists used to say, and probably still do (I haven’t listened to them in a while): “‘Freedom!’ say the capitalists. Yeah: the freedom to sleep under bridges.” For my money, Dinesh’s most compelling

Terrorists with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have blown up the burial place of Jonah, the reluctant prophet from Galilee whose story of being swallowed by a massive sea creature is told in the Bible. Islam recognizes the existence of Jonah, also. ISIL radicals ringed the tomb with explosives and detonated it at a remote location, civil defense officials who witnessed the incident told CNN. A video of the explosion was posted to YouTube, but CNN said it couldn’t yet verify its authenticity. Jonah’s tomb had been inside the Mosque of the Prophet Younis, a Sunni-held facility. A House lawsuit against President Obama over executive actions could have the ironic effect of causing him to take even more. Obama is responding to the House Republicans´ lawsuit challenging his executive-action end-runs around Congress by looking for more areas where he can take action unilaterally, said a White House official. “We certainly aren’t going to trim our sails,” White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer told reporters gathered for a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, adding that White House staff are currently on the hunt for more areas for Obama to issue executive actions. “If you’re looking for

When companies are heading for the door as fast as they decently can, you have to ask yourself why? President Obama´s approach is a rather different one; let´s just lock the door and stop them from leaving. On both sides of the US political divide, America´s apparent corporate exodus via so-called "inversion takeovers" is a source of growing concern. However, their response to the problem could hardly be more different. Broadly, Republicans want to deal with the issue by lowering corporate tax rates; but Democrats want to stop the outflow by changing the rules. As things stand, these allow companies

The highest human rights court in Europe has told European LGBTs that they have no human right to same-sex marriage, in a case that also shows how complicated sexual and marital norms have become in this new transsexual world. The case arose after a man in Finland, who was married with a child, decided he wanted to live as a woman. After a sex-change operation, he attempted to change his governmental "male identity number" to a female one. He was turned down because, according to law, he needed his wife´s consent to change their man-woman marriage to a "registered partnership",
