Gay actors shouldn’t have a monopoly on gay roles, award-winning stage and screen actor Nathan Lane said. Lane, who is gay and has played both straight and gay characters, was asked the question at a TV critics’ meeting Tuesday. He was there to discuss PBS’ presentation of the Broadway play The Nance, in which he stars. “We just had The Normal Heart (with) Mark Ruffalo, fantastic job. I think who’s right for the part and most talented” should be hired, Lane said. Ruffalo, who is straight, starred as a gay man in the AIDS drama for HBO. “That way only madness lies. …

She has faced a death sentence, one hundred lashes, a medieval jail cell, a series of lawsuits, an unexpected and terrifying arrest at the airport, a subsequent detention, and a non-stop series of lawsuits which have yet to quit. I am talking about the very young, the very beautiful, the very accomplished Christian woman, Dr. Meriam Yahya Ishag, of Sudan. Will the United States be able to get Dr. Meriam out of this God-forsaken country or not? When will my country be able to free her and her American family from the shackles of the most savage Shariah law? Can

Israel was warned by the UN´s human rights chief today that it may have committed "war crimes" with its bombing raids on Gaza. Navi Pillay said Tel Aviv´s two-week onslaught on Gaza--which has cost more than 650 Palestinians lives--would be thoroughly investigated. Ms Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the attacks have destroyed houses and hospitals and killed civilians. [Snip] "Every one of these incidents must be properly and independently investigated." According to Gaza officials, 475 houses have been destroyed and 2,644 damaged, while 46 schools, 56 mosques and seven hospitals have been struck.

Pat Bowlen, the Denver Broncos owner who won two Super Bowls and oversaw one of the NFL´s most consistently competitive franchises, has given up control of the team to continue his battle of Alzheimer´s disease. The Denver Post first reported the story early Wednesday morning. "As many in the Denver community and around the National Football League have speculated, my husband, Pat, has very bravely and quietly battled Alzheimer´s disease for the last few years," Annabel Bowlen said in a statement released through the Broncos. "He has elected to keep his condition private because he has strongly believed, and often said, ´It´s

Three years ago this week, hundreds of protestors jeered outside the Orange County jail in Florida as Casey Anthony walked out the front door as a free woman. They, like many across America, were outraged at Anthony´s acquittal of murder charges in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Over the past three years, there have been many questions about the now 28-year-old´s life. Here, PEOPLE answers some of them: Is She Broke? Her lawyer says so. Cheney Mason tells CNN that Anthony stays at home and works as a "housekeeper, clerk, secretary and stuff like that."

A working group of lawmakers appointed by Speaker John Boehner released a set of recommendations to the House GOP conference Wednesday, including $1.5 in new spending and proposals to send the National Guard to the border and require the Obama administration to form a border security plan as tens of thousands of illegal alien children stream across the border. The proposal faces an uncertain future, with congressional Democrats digging in with opposition to amending a 2008 human trafficking law that has been cited as an obstacle to deporting the children while the recommendations produced pockets of opposition on the right.

On Wednesday, Barney Frank came back to the committee he used to lead to defend the financial overhaul law he helped create. (snip) A report put out Monday by the panel’s chairman, Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas, encapsulated their belief that the law has been a failure. Among other criticisms, the panel’s Republicans say the law has exacerbated the belief that the government will rush to bail out big, complex financial firms the next time crisis strikes, rather than ending the ills plaguing the financial system. Mr. Frank kicked off his testimony by challenging the GOP’s “too big to fail”

Any pause in global warming, such as it may have been during the first decade of the 21st century, might seem to be on its way out. Global average temperatures for May and June 2014 reached record levels of warmth. Last year ranked as somewhere between the second and sixth warmest on record globally, depending on the temperature records you pick. But if history is any guide, expect more pauses in the thermometer´s climb toward a warmer world, thanks to the climate´s natural variability. That´s one implication of two recent studies exploring the pause with an eye toward testing the

FLORENCE, Ariz.- Arizona´s highest court on Wednesday temporarily halted the execution of a condemned inmate so it could consider a last-minute appeal. Joseph Rudolph Wood, 55, was scheduled to be put to death Wednesday morning at the state prison in Florence, but that was delayed when the Arizona Supreme Court said it would consider whether he received inadequate legal representation at his sentencing. The appeal also challenges the secrecy of the lethal injection process and the drugs that are used. The state Supreme Court could still allow the execution to move forward later Wednesday once it considers the arguments. The

During President Obama´s West Coast fundraising swing this week, he´ll squeeze in an official speech about job training at a community college between multimillion-dollar fundraisers in Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles to benefit House and Senate Democrats´ re-elections this fall. Over the last few weeks Obama has made a practice of sprinkling in a few public-policy speeches on trips devoted mostly to fundraising, even as he´s faced new foreign policy crises in Ukraine and Gaza. The terrible cost of thwarting Hamas

Israel’s mood at the start of this war with Hamas was one of confident assurance. We wouldn’t be deterred by the rocket threat, and Hamas would be contained. That’s utterly changed. The rockets turned out to be the least of our concerns. And the national mood now is a mixture of anguish at the growing toll of IDF dead, anger at the feckless response of parts of the international community — notably the US — and confidence in the troops and (atypically) the political leadership. To lose the lives of 30 Israelis to terrorism is, appallingly, nothing new in a country

When writing about politics, it´s all too frequent to use terminology that often obscures more than elucidates. That´s especially true when it comes to the word "wave"—shorthand for a landslide victory for the winning party. I´ve argued before that the likelihood of 2014 being a wave election has been rising, given the president´s consistently low approval ratings and the fact that Republicans are running evenly on the generic ballot (which usually translates into a clear GOP edge) and that the right-track/wrong-track numbers are near historic lows. All these big-picture signs are ominous for the party in power. But this week, The

Just 11 years ago, there were 1.5 million Christians living in Iraq. Since the U.S. war there, that number has plummeted to approximately 400,000 — and it is still falling fast. The chaos created by the U.S. invasion, occupation, and withdrawal, as well as the ongoing Syrian civil war and insurgent-fueled unrest in much of Iraq, has dramatically increased the persecution and pressure on Iraq´s Christians and other religious minorities. ISIS, the emergent Islamist terrorist group that spans from Syria into Iraq, has already taken over Mosul, Iraq´s second-largest city. They painted signs on the walls of Christian homes, meant

Washington - The Obama administration is developing a new way for religious nonprofits that object to paying for contraceptives in their health plans to opt out, without submitting a form they say violates their religious beliefs. The government has been searching for solutions since the Supreme Court decided an evangelical college in Illinois can avoid filling out the form while the case is being appealed. That move undercut the accommodation the Obama administration had devised in hopes of resolving religious group´s objections without shifting the cost for birth control to employees.
