How Obama is saving the DNC money

Washington Examiner (DC), by Susan Crabtree    Original Article

During President Obama´s West Coast fundraising swing this week, he´ll squeeze in an official speech about job training at a community college between multimillion-dollar fundraisers in Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles to benefit House and Senate Democrats´ re-elections this fall. But that´s not just because he´s a multi-tasker. It will also cut down the cost of the trip. Over the last few weeks Obama has made a practice of sprinkling in a few public-policy speeches on trips devoted mostly to fundraising, even as he´s faced new foreign policy crises in Ukraine and Gaza. His top spokesman says he’s not

BuzzFeed asked George H.W. Bush what rules he uses in picking out his socks for the day. His response is printed in full below, with our own added illustrations. 1.(Photographs) "The first rule of sock club..."is there is no sock club". 2. “Assess the prevailing mood.”“Sometimes a good sock can give those around you a lift…” “…like a catchy tune or a post-convention bounce in the polls.” 3. “When the thermometer dips, thread count matters.” “It is a little known scientific fact that freezing your tail off actually starts in the toes.”

The terrible cost of thwarting Hamas

Israel’s mood at the start of this war with Hamas was one of confident assurance. We wouldn’t be deterred by the rocket threat, and Hamas would be contained. That’s utterly changed. The rockets turned out to be the least of our concerns. And the national mood now is a mixture of anguish at the growing toll of IDF dead, anger at the feckless response of parts of the international community — notably the US — and confidence in the troops and (atypically) the political leadership. To lose the lives of 30 Israelis to terrorism is, appallingly, nothing new in a country

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Republican Party’s bookish former vice presidential nominee, is starting to look like a candidate for the presidency in 2016. In August, Ryan will publish a book with a distinctly campaign-themed title, The Way Forward. On Tuesday, the Federal Election Commission approved of a nationwide book tour sponsored by Ryan’s publisher and the Political Action Committee the Wisconsin congressman founded, Prosperity Action PAC. “The book will address “the state of the conservative movement in America today, discuss how it contrasts with liberal progressivism, and explain what must be done to save what Representative Ryan refers to as the

When writing about politics, it´s all too frequent to use terminology that often obscures more than elucidates. That´s especially true when it comes to the word "wave"—shorthand for a landslide victory for the winning party. I´ve argued before that the likelihood of 2014 being a wave election has been rising, given the president´s consistently low approval ratings and the fact that Republicans are running evenly on the generic ballot (which usually translates into a clear GOP edge) and that the right-track/wrong-track numbers are near historic lows. All these big-picture signs are ominous for the party in power. But this week, The

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) accused the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) of genocide for “systematically targeting Christians and other religious minorities in Iraq for extinction” during an impassioned speech on the House floor Tuesday. Wolf – who earned an international reputation as a champion of human rights for his humanitarian efforts in China, Tibet, Sudan, Afghanistan and other countries during his 34 years in Congress - told his House colleagues that “I believe that what is happening to the Christian community in Iraq is genocide. I also believe it is ‘a crime against humanity’.” "Last Thursday, the Islamic

Just 11 years ago, there were 1.5 million Christians living in Iraq. Since the U.S. war there, that number has plummeted to approximately 400,000 — and it is still falling fast. The chaos created by the U.S. invasion, occupation, and withdrawal, as well as the ongoing Syrian civil war and insurgent-fueled unrest in much of Iraq, has dramatically increased the persecution and pressure on Iraq´s Christians and other religious minorities. ISIS, the emergent Islamist terrorist group that spans from Syria into Iraq, has already taken over Mosul, Iraq´s second-largest city. They painted signs on the walls of Christian homes, meant

Jim Gilchrist — one of the founders of the Minutemen Project — said he’s reaching out across America to recruit at least 3,500 volunteers who will go to the border to patrol and cover the “porous areas” between San Diego and Brownsville, Texas. The campaign is called “Operation Normandy,” and it’s set for May 1, 2015, Raw Story reported. “If you are familiar with the Normandy invasion of France in 1944, then you have an idea how large and logistically complicated this event will be,” Mr. Gilchrist said, Raw Story reported. “However, there is one difference. We are not going to the border to invade anyone. We are going there to stop an

Washington - The Obama administration is developing a new way for religious nonprofits that object to paying for contraceptives in their health plans to opt out, without submitting a form they say violates their religious beliefs. The government has been searching for solutions since the Supreme Court decided an evangelical college in Illinois can avoid filling out the form while the case is being appealed. That move undercut the accommodation the Obama administration had devised in hopes of resolving religious group´s objections without shifting the cost for birth control to employees. TUCSON — A governor was moved to tears. A mayor fretted about disease and crime. A city councilman accused the federal government of keeping secrets. Around the country, in statehouses and mayor’s suites, in city council chambers and local police agencies, the challenge of housing tens of thousands of unaccompanied Central American migrant children is forcing an emotional, uncomfortable and politically treacherous conversation on policymakers at every level. In the weeks and months since large numbers of migrant children began showing up in the Rio Grande Valley, federal officials have turned to states as far north as New England and many

The director, William E. But under the terms of a plea agreement he accepted in April, Mr. Rapfogel paid the remaining balance of $3 million in restitution in exchange for a shorter sentence of 3 ⅓ to 10 years.

With Albany rocked by a seemingly endless barrage of scandals and arrests, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo set up a high-powered commission last summer to root out corruption in state politics. It was barely two months old when its investigators, hunting for violations of campaign-finance laws, issued a subpoena to a media-buying firm that had placed millions of dollars’ worth of advertisements for the New York State Democratic Party. The investigators did not realize that the firm, Buying Time, also counted Mr. Cuomo among its clients, having bought the airtime for his campaign when he ran for governor in 2010. Word that the

The remains of around 40 international victims of the Malaysia Airlines tragedy left Ukraine´s Kharkiv airport on a convoy of planes earlier today, ahead of a painstaking identification process which is expected to take several months. There is concern however, that as many as 95 victims--one third of the total number of passengers on board MH17--may still be missing after Dutch officials counted only 200 bodies on the morgue train on which

The FAA had many various measures short of a flight ban, like warnings, that it could have imposed. The FAA only warns airlines about flying to Afghanistan; it does not ban them. And the FAA move comes the day after a general State Department warning about Israel–though far more people were killed in Chicago on Fourth of July weekend than in the Jewish state since the start of the Gaza campaign.
