WASHINGTON — Congressional investigators using fake identities were able to obtain taxpayer-subsidized health insurance under President Barack Obama’s law, according to testimony to be delivered Wednesday. The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office says its undercover investigators were able to get subsidized health care under fake names in 11 out of 18 attempts. The GAO is still paying premiums for the policies, even as the Obama administration attempts to verify phony documentation. The agency’s findings are contained in testimony to be delivered at a House Ways and Means Committee hearing Wednesday. An advance copy was provided to The Associated Press. Seto Bagdoyan,

(Video) Kiev, Ukraine- Did a Russian fire the missile that downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17? That depends on who you ask. A top Ukrainian official says he has no doubt. Vitaly Nayda, Ukraine´s director of informational security, told CNN the person who shot down the flight was "absolutely" a Russian. "A Russian-trained, well-equipped, well-educated officer ... pushed that button deliberately," he said. "We taped conversations" between a Russian officer and his office in Moscow, Nayda said. "We know for sure that several minutes before the missile was launched, there was a report" to a Russian officer that the plane was

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin on Tuesday urged Walgreen Co. to reconsider a possible move of its headquarters to Switzerland to lower its U.S. tax bill. In a letter to Walgreen Chief Executive Gregory Wasson, Durbin said the company could face a backlash from its customers. “I believe you will find that your customers are deeply patriotic and will not support Walgreen’s decision to turn its back on the United States,” Durbin wrote. “Nearly all of your $2.5 billion in profits earned last year were from sales to U.S. taxpaying customers.” The senator ended his letter with a twist on Walgreen’s

The Birnbaum-Tibon megapiece in the New Republic on why the Palestinian peace process failed is as interesting for what it does not contain as much as what it does. (Snip) The only thing the Palestinians can actually do is fight. The only thing the West demands of them is to forswear the only thing they can do. The best alternative to a negotiated settlement for both Israel and Palestine may now be to fight to the finish, because that is the only thing each can do. RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas—Police officers arrested a member of the Salvadoran street gang Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, early Tuesday morning in Rio Grande City. A police officer patrolling the streets of Rio Grande City shortly after 1 a.m. heard loud music coming from a house. He went to the house to warn the residents about a city ordinance against excessively loud music, said Lieutenant Jose Solis. As the officer approached a house on the 100 block of Pine Street he saw two women outside who ran inside when they saw him, Solis said. Noticing the strange behavior, the officer went

Carson, the retired brain surgeon, won a Western Conservative Summit straw poll this weekend in Colorado, and the Draft Ben Carson for President Committee has raised more than similar groups for Hillary Clinton and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) have. "I certainly didn´t give it much thought early on," he said on Fox News before noting that "there´s just hundreds of people" who are "so enthusiastic" every place he goes. The Obama administration will continue handing out Obamacare subsidies to federal exchange customers despite a federal court’s ruling Tuesday that the subsidies are illegal. A D.C. Court of Appeals panel ruled Tuesday morning that customers in the 36 states that didn’t establish their own exchange and use HealthCare.gov instead cannot be given premium tax credits, according to the text of the Affordable Care Act itself. But the White House said in response that it will continue handing out the billions of taxpayer dollars in subsidies. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said that while the case continues to be battled

Several real estate agents, speaking anonymously, said they heard secondhand that the president was looking to buy the 1993 remodeled home with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. This past Saturday (19 July) Fox News ran the following essay by K.T. McFarland, “White House leadership: Reagan on KAL 007 vs. Obama on MH17.” It begins thus: “There is a saying that great men make history and history makes great men. Ronald Reagan was the living example of this when, on September 1, 1983, the Soviet Union, without warning, shot down a civilian Korean airliner flying from New York to Seoul, killing all 269 men, women and children on board.”

The China-US sorpasso is looming. I do not mean the much-exaggerated moment when China’s GDP will overtake America´s GDP--which may not happen in the lifetime of anybody reading this blog post--as China slows to more pedestrian growth rates (an objective of premier Li Keqiang.) The sorpasso may instead be the ominous moment when China’s debt ratios overtake the arch-debtor itself. I had presumed that this inflection point was still a very long way off, but a new report from Stephen Green at Standard Chartered argues that China’s aggregate debt level has reached 251 per cent of GDP, as of June.

The future of Obamacare was uncertain today after a federal court in Washington, D.C. struck down tax subsidies for Americans who bought insurance through federally-funded exchanges. Within hours the same policy was held up by another court, setting up a Supreme Court showdown. The cases revolve around four words in the Affordable Care Act, which says the tax credits are available to people who enroll through an exchange ´established by the state.´ The rulings affect consumers who purchased their coverage through the federal insurance marketplace--or exchange--that serves 36 states. If the first ruling is upheld by the nation´s

The Obama administration’s decisions to pull troops out of Iraq, support Islamists in Syria, back the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, protect the Iranian regime, and back terrorist opposition in Libya have led to the destruction of Christian communities throughout the region. Christians have come under the heaviest hand in the Middle East in generations thanks to the weakness of the United States. And it is worthwhile remembering that the presence of Christians in

Islamist militants in Iraq are reported to have seized an ancient monastery near Mosul and expelled the monks. Local residents said monks at the Mar Behnam monastery were allowed to take only the clothes they were wearing. The monastery, which dates from the 4th Century, is a major Christian landmark and a place of pilgrimage. Christians have fled Mosul after the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) told them to convert to Islam, pay a tax or face death. Isis has seized large parts of Syria and Iraq and said last month it was creating an Islamic caliphate.

Sources say members of Ansar al-Sharia moved to the house just outside the east wall of the compound within three weeks of American personnel renting the facility, and later used the location to help plan and take part in the attack on the American Consulate on Sept. 11, 2012. The neighbors prompted multiple security requests -- including repeated requests up until the day

American officials believe the missile that destroyed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was fired by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine, using a Russian-made system designed for bringing down fighter jets. That brings up the question: How easy is it to bring down a passenger jet with a weapon that’s meant to used by trained soldiers? Turns out, it’s pretty easy. As in, take a three-day course and go for it easy. The weapon in question is the SA-11, a radar-guided surface to air missile (SAM) system. It’s been around since the Soviets deployed the first-generation model in 1979. The mobile system (it sits on

There were only a few ways Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) could react to HBO’s “True Blood” portrayal of Texas Republicans being murdered at a fictitious Cruz fundraiser. He could have ignored it, or laughed it off. But he went political. A scene in Sunday’s episode took place at the George W. Bush Presidential Library, where a Cruz function was being held. New York - Chrysler recalled about 792,000 older SUVs Tuesday for ignition switch problems. The flaw affects Jeep Commanders from model years 2006-2007 and Jeep Grand Cherokees from 2005-2007. The issue is linked to one accident, but the company is unaware of any related injuries. The problem can cause the ignition key to move out of the "on" position while the car is being driven, usually because it was bumped by a driver´s knee, the company said in a statement. That could cause the engine to stall and the front airbags to stop working. Problems with ignition switches have been found in millions of vehicles recalled this year.

Several locals near the StroiDom store in Torez, about 10 miles from where the plane crashed, said Tuesday that they had seen what appeared to be a missile launcher driving through their town a few hours before the plane was shot down last Thursday. Their story appears to corroborate Ukrainian claims that the separatist rebels had a sophisticated missile launcher and drove it to the site
