Fighting broke out near the railway station at the heart of the rebel stronghold of Donetsk on Monday in what separatists said was an attempt by government forces to seize back the east Ukrainian city. The government in Kiev denied sending the regular army into the centre of Donetsk, which the separatists captured in April, but said small ´self-organised´ pro-Ukrainian groups were fighting the pro-Russian rebels in the city. Four people were killed in clashes near the railway station and close to the airport outside Donetsk, local health officials said in the industrial city which was home to about one million people

TECUN UMAN, Guatemala — The man-in-the-know nursed a late-morning beer at a bar near the Suchiate River that separates Guatemala from Mexico, and answered a question about his human smuggling business with a question: “Do you think a coyote is going to say he’s a coyote?” Dressed as a migrant in shorts and sandals but speaking like an entrepreneur, he then described shipments of tens of thousands of dollars in human cargo from the slums of Honduras and highlands of Guatemala to cities across the United States. “It’s business,” he said, agreeing to speak to a reporter only if guaranteed anonymity. “Sometimes,

HOUSTON, Texas--The U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee approved a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 that includes $5.508 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. Included in that amount is more than $87 million for the transportation of illegal immigrants--most often via plane--from the U.S.-Mexico border to federal facilities around the nation. The FY 2015 bill summary states that the federal government will provide "$87.6 million above the request for the transportation of unaccompanied immigrant children– often via commercial or charter aircraft – from DHS custody to the legally required shelters operated by the Office of Refugee

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) believes Hispanics should get amnesty and citizenship to punish Americans who are against illegal immigration. After he told the La Raza conference in Los Angeles that President Barack Obama gave the Latino community a "down payment" with his temporary amnesty program that halted the deportations "of our people," Gutierrez urged Hispanics to seek retribution at the ballot box. "We need to raise our voices, make ourselves citizens, sign up to vote and punish those who speak ill and criminalize children who come to our border," Gutierrez reportedly said in Spanish this weekend. Gutierrez addressed the conference this weekend and

Texas Rep. Joaquín Castro on Monday said Gov. Rick Perry is “militarizing our border” with his reported decision to deploy state National Guard troops there. “We should be sending the Red Cross to the border not the National Guard to deal with this humanitarian crisis,” the Democratic congressman said in an email. “The children fleeing violence in Central America are seeking out border patrol agents. They are not trying to evade them. Why send soldiers to confront these kids?” “Militarizing our border is the wrong response to the arrival of children,” Castro continued. “I remain hopeful that our state can provide a

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee and a key immigration hawk, took to the Senate floor on Monday afternoon to attack the efforts by President Barack Obama to grant amnesty via executive order to millions of illegal aliens. During his floor speech, Sessions endorsed a bill from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) that aims to curb the president’s executive amnesty efforts—and called on his colleagues to cosponsor it. Sessions said: Senator Cruz has a bill that would stop this presidential overreach. Sessions said. It’s very simple. It lays out that we won’t spend money providing legal documents

The first aerial pictures of the MH17 crash site have emerged, laying bare the breathtaking scale of the disaster that claimed the lives of 298 innocents. The stills, taken from the skies over the village of Grabovo in eastern Ukraine, show the scorched earth at the point of impact and gives an idea of how much more severe the devastation could have been had it come down in the nearby family homes. Grabovo is controlled by pro-Russian rebels, widely suspected of shooting the plane out of the sky on Thursday afternoon. The pictures emerged as the train carrying the bodies of all

Speaking at the Western Conservative Summit at Colorado Christian University on Saturday, former Alaska Gov. Why not [unintelligible] and Columbia U? There, too, school’s out for summer.” Palin also dubbed the border situation an “invasion” that has been facilitated by President Barack Obama. “If Obama

On Monday morning, President Obama signed an executive order prohibiting organizations that receive federal contracts from making employment decisions on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. A group of religious leaders and Obama allies had called for the executive order to include a religious exemption, so that "religious organizations will not be automatically disqualified or disadvantaged in obtaining contracts because of their religious beliefs." But the president rejected their request. The order allows religious organizations permitted to prioritize the hiring of coreligionists to continue to do so, but it does not include an exemption for any group that

Sarah Palin, as usual, riled up the crowd at Western Conservative Summit this past weekend. An outspoken advocate of impeaching President Obama, she called out those conservatives who believe that, politically, impeachment would be a failure because it would set Obama up as a martyr. The buck stops with the guy at the top. Considering Articles of Impeachment is the check. Making the case for it is not difficult. Difficult is having the moral courage to do what’s right, Congress. It takes guts to hold him accountable. I’m hearing some argue for cautious inaction, they’re terming it. They’re saying, ‘Obama’s

There’s a kind of hush over Israel at the moment. The streets are emptier; the cars are honking less; cafes are not deserted but they’re quieter; young kids’ laughter in the little park near our office rings out startlingly loud and carefree. We’re a nation glued to the news — to the TV, the radio, the internet. And it’s almost unremittingly grim. Just a few days ago, we were worrying about hundreds of rockets hitting all over Israel, and shaking our heads at the mini-miracle of Iron Dome intercepting most of them. Now it’s the residents of the kibbutzim and

You would think that with the ongoing violence in the Middle East, the recent international air disaster over Ukraine, and the massive influx of illegal immigrants on our Southern border, the White House would cancel the president´s upcoming trip to the West Coast for Democratic party fundraisers. But you would be wrong. Mr. Obama is scheduled to leave Washington Tuesday and headline a party event in Seattle later that night. He will then attend Democratic fundraisers in California before returning to Washington on Thursday. A major donor to a secretive club of wealthy Democratic financiers hosted President Barack Obama at her home last week for a fundraiser benefitting one of that club’s most politically active organizations. House Majority PAC is one of the most nakedly political recipients of cash from the Democracy Alliance, a shadowy network of liberal millionaires and billionaires that doles out tens

Part of the anti-Israel war effort includes attempts to demoralize Israel and its supporters. That is why Hamas, Hezbollah and others try so hard to kidnap Israeli civilians or soldiers, and even to grab dead bodies. That psychological warfare is on full display in the media and social media. But it’s not working because Israelis know that Hamas and other Islamic terrorist groups in Gaza, who fire from among civilians towards civilians, leave Israel with no choice but to fight in a war it didn’t want but in which so much is at stake. "Pressuring Israel to agree to a cease-fire that rescues Hamas from defeat and leaves it in possession of its missiles, tunnels, and terror infrastructure is foolish and wrong. Former Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren believes that America’s presence isn’t welcome at all. During an interview with an Israel news network on Monday, Oren said that Kerry coming to the region is “to our chagrin.” Oren cited Kerry’s history of failed attempts at peace negotiations in the region, and strained U.S. relation with Egypt, as well as the Obama administration’s

When asked just how vulnerable former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is to a challenge from her left, the Acela Corridor’s political class is quick to note that 2016 is not 2008. They observe that the factors which made Clinton vulnerable to a challenge from then Sen. Barack Obama in 2008 simply do not exist today. For example, those grounded political reporters say, the former secretary is wildly popular among Democrats. They cite polling data which shows the former secretary leading her most likely challenger – the sitting Vice President of the United States – often by more than 30 points. Finally, they
