As a TV and movie star for nearly six decades, the Oklahoma kid made the hard art of acting seem like a game — as deft and persuasive as a gambler´s con He was a man’s man who relied on his wits instead of his fists; a ladies’ man who wouldn’t steal a fella’s girl. Famous for his Maverick Western series in the 1950s and The Rockford Files in the ’70s, and in movies like The Great Escape and Grand Prix in between, James Garner played amiable, independent characters for more than a half-century, and never lost his comforting, enduring appeal.

Next year residents of Los Angeles will flock to cinemas to see a blockbuster called San Andreas in which their city will be wiped out by an apocalyptic earthquake. Kylie Minogue and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, one of Hollywood´s current most bankable stars, will be seen roaming the wreckage after the City of Angels is mercilessly flattened by the "Big One". As skyscrapers collapse, thousands die and chaos ensues, most of those in the audience will be wondering how long before it happens for real. The southern section of the San Andreas fault that runs near the city has not had a "mega-quake"

Washington – US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday that he plans to immediately fly to the Middle East to try to negotiate a ceasefire between Israelis and Palestinians. Kerry, speaking on all the major talk shows, said the US backs Egypt’s proposal for an immediate ceasefire, which Hamas rejected last week. “Israel has every right in the world to defend itself, but we’re hopeful, very hopeful, that we can quickly try to find a way forward to put a ceasefire in place,” Kerry said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

While enlistment rates in the U.S. military vary by group, they also vary by state. Enlistment ranges from less than 3 per thousand in North Dakota to more than 7 per thousand in Florida and Maine. According to the Defense Department, differences exist at the regional level as well. In 2013, 44% of all military recruits came from the South, despite it having only 36% of the country’s 18-24 year-old civilian population. By contrast, the Northeast was the most underrepresented region of the country; only 14% of new enlistments came from this area, compared to 18% of its 18-24 year-old population.

With her life’s dream of being a small family farmer in Virginia, Martha Boneta obtained 64 acres in Fauquier County, Va in 2006 to raise vegetables, herbs, raw honey, eggs, and host small animals. Little did she know that a birthday party with eight ten-year old girls would trigger zealous county regulators who saw the party as an event needing special exception permits and required a hearing that would impose fees. Thinking she had all the right commercial permits and licenses, Boneta was still threatened with $5,000 per day fines despite Virginia being a right to farm state, where local governments

Shortly after the Sunni militant group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) retook control of Raqqa earlier this year, it created the al-Khansaa´ Brigade, an all-female unit operating in the city. Its purpose is to apprehend civilian women in Raqqa who do not follow the organization´s strict brand of Sharia law, including a mandate that all women be fully covered in public and that they be accompanied by a male chaperone. "We have established the brigade to raise awareness of our religion among women, and to punish women who do not abide by the law," says Abu Ahmad, an

Buzz Aldrin followed about 20 minutes later. Most people assume that NASA always planned for Armstrong to be the first person to step out onto the moon because of his rank. Texas Gov. Perry, 64, hasn´t said if he plans to run again in 2016. But he´s clearly considering it, and is meeting Saturday and Sunday with veterans and conservative activists in the northern Iowa communities of Algona and Clear Lake. "Our nominee normally has done this more than once. I think this goes back to that issue of experience. Experience matters and by

It wasn´t quite the stroll in the park Rory McIlroy would have liked but in the end the Ulsterman was able to cruise to the 2014 Claret Jug with a final-round 71 to win by two. When he started it looked like this major would look like his other two -- that is, complete and total routs. McIlroy birdied the first to go up seven strokes on Rickie Fowler but then made two bogeys in his next five holes to open the door. And wouldn´t you know it, our old friend Sergio Garcia strolled right on through. Garcia pulled to

The year was 1969. The turbulent time in America saw troops fighting in Vietnam, and a nation dealing with the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, killed in 1963, and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., both murdered in 1968. Then came that one small step. Forty-five years ago today, 500 million people around the world witnessed American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins as they embarked on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and six hours later Armstrong was the first man to step

The Legal Argument for Gay Marriage

For better or for worse, the constitutional theory providing equal rights to gay people is entirely authored by Justice Anthony Kennedy. As everybody now knows, Kennedy penned the trilogy of gay rights opinions that lie behind an unbroken streak of judicial wins for gay marriage in the states. At first glance, today’s 10th Circuit opinion affirming the invalidation of Oklahoma’s marriage ban continues this streak seamlessly. But just below the surface of the ruling lies a bear trap that could mangle the legal theories that have brought gay marriage so close to the finish line.

TAMPA — The road from arrest to trial often is paved with highlights and eye shadow — but not too much — and a high-collar schoolmarm dress or business-casual attire. A fresh haircut and a close shave also can go a long way. The latest to employ the subliminal strategy of a courtroom makeover is Richard McTear. McTear is accused of throwing a baby out of a moving car on Interstate 275 five years ago. When he was arrested, dreadlocks cascaded down his head and he looked every bit an angry — and cocky — young man with a record

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ohio – An Army veteran who was wounded during the Iraq War is worried a citation will result in him losing his 14 pet ducks, which he says are therapeutic. Darin Welker, of West Lafayette, was cited with a minor misdemeanor June 23 for having the ducks in his yard. He is scheduled to appear in Coshocton Municipal Court for a hearing Wednesday and could face a $150 fine. Welker, 36, is afraid he won´t be permitted to keep the ducks, which he says help him with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and keep him more active. The

I was thinking the world could not be more absurd when I read that a Hamas official announced to Arab Israelis they should not be fearful of their attacks because the missiles were designed to kill Jews only. This development is so outstanding that the Norwegians -- citizens of probably the most anti-Semitic country in Europe -- who decide the winners of the Nobel peace prize undoubtedly secretly voted on the spot to award it to Hamas this year. I was wrong, though, there must be some virus rapidly spreading across the globe that paralyzes brain cells, creating a world gone mad. The diversity proponents who have long exaggerated

The left-leaning tech blog Pando seems to be angry about a lot of aspects of reality.* Witness David Carr flipping out over this billboard that he spotted in San Francisco, “walking home from Pando’s office a few nights ago.” The billboard just educates people about reality. If you raise the cost of labor, then it becomes economical to replace labor with automation, in this case touch screens, which are declining in cost as labor prices itself out of the market through high minimum wages. Seems pretty basic. But Carr goes a little nuts, throwing around words like “screwing,” and impugning a person linked to the billboard.

Wallace played a clip in which Obama seemed to acknowledge the ineffectualness of U.S. sanctions, a clip Kerry strongly suggested was taken out of context.
