There is not very much good to say about the life and career of Vladimir Lenin, but give the pickled old monster this much: He cut through more than two centuries’ worth of bull and straight to the heart of all politics with his simple question: “Who? Whom?” Which is to say: Who acts? Who is acted upon? Even here in the land of the free, meditating upon that question can be an uncomfortable exercise. The foundation of classical liberalism, and of the American order, is not the rule of law, a written constitution, freedom of speech and worship, one-man/one-vote democracy,

“We choose to go to the Moon. We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win . . . This is in some measure an act of faith and vision, for we do not know what benefits await us . . . But space

Talk radio host Glenn Beck criticized Fox News and Breitbart for their reporting of his plan to visit the border to bring food, soccer balls, and teddy bears to illegal immigrants on the southern border. Beck complained about a lack of coverage of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) joining his. “Nobody´s reading [The Blaze´s coverage of Ted Cruz going to border]. Our viewers and our readers are not even reading it. That should be the number-one retweeted story. If you like Ted Cruz [you should promote this story.] Where´s Breitbart on that story? Where´s Fox News on that story?” Beck stated. He added

One of the reasons people have grown so angry over Obama´s manufactured border crisis is that everything we are told is a lie. That´s consistent with the core Amnesty Caucus belief that the benighted knuckle-dragging xenophobic citizens of the United States have nothing to say about immigration policy - it´s a decision that will be made by the Ruling Class, in accordance with their political and economic interests. You taxpaying chumps will be told whatever the Ruling Class thinks you need to hear, whenever they think you need to hear it, with the truth either suppressed or kept on ice

AP reports that former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will campaign in Arkansas in August for Republican nominee Asa Hutchinson. Perfect. Asa doesn´t think the bottom 40 percent of Arkansas wage earners are entitled to any tax breaks. Mitt Romney´s thoughts on the "47 percent" are well known. Like Asa, Chris Christie doesn´t have a problem with letting people decide what medical services should be supplied under group health insurance plans, no matter what the law says. Christie absolutely favors denial of contraception if an employer chooses to deny it. Slippery slope. In vitro fertilization? That´s a

Apple Inc. (AAPL) has talked with former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney about a public-relations job, a friend of his said. Carney hasn’t made up his mind, according to the person, who asked not to be named because the discussions are private and no agreement has been reached. Carney declined to specify whether he’s talking to Apple or any other specific company. “I’m talking to a lot of different people about a variety of potential opportunities,” he said yesterday in an e-mail. Apple has been seeking a successor to Katie Cotton, the company’s longtime vice president for worldwide communications, who announced her

There´s a growing body of evidence that has emerged that links Russia to the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine, despite the best efforts of pro-Russian militants to scrub the record. Just 25 miles from Donetsk in pro-Russian held territory, the flight carrying 298 passengers and crew was brought down on Thursday, killing everyone on board. The U.S. believes it was likely shot down by an SA-11 missile fired from a Buk surface-to-air missile system. Both Russian President Vladimir Putin and pro-Russian militants have deflected, attempting to blame Ukraine for the crash. Later, the top rebel commander

Cats have provided the web with funny videos and pictures providing countless viral hits--but Simon’s Cat is the unlikely megastar. His charming animated, black-and-white adventures have now amassed more than 500m views on YouTube, and led to books and merchandising that funds an entire studio in London. He is a phenomenon that simply would not have emerged without the web. This week, however, the animators behind Simon’s Cat, led by creator Simon Tofield, took an even more internet-savvy path. In a bid to fund a full-length short film, in colour, they’ve turned to online crowd-funding site Indiegogo to raise some

Hamas militants sent a donkey laden with explosives on a suicide mission in one of the most unconventional tactics yet seen in the fighting in Gaza, the Israeli army has said. Troops said they were forced to open fire on the animal - blowing it up - as it approached their position in the southern city of Rafah, near the Egyptian border. The Israeli army had received prior intelligence that militants were going to try to use animals to carry out attacks, according to a press release on the Israeli Defence Forces website. The book was published on January 17, 2012, under the William Morrow imprint of HarperCollins. With a little help from Morrow’s publicity department, Kyle was featured on segments of the Today Show and the O’Reilly Factor. A veteran of four tours in Iraq, Kyle’s overlay of modesty and bravado on top of his obvious heroism helped propel the book onto the best-seller list upon publication.

A raging wildfire in central Washington has wiped most of a small town off the map - destroying 100 homes as it whips out of control across 260 square miles of dry forest - and fears are now growing that it will claim a second community. The Carlton Complex fire grew by nearly ten times Friday as four fires horrifically merged into one and exploded across the small village of Pateros, officials said. Residents of the town of Malott and outlying areas of nearby Brewster have been evacuated as flames rages only miles from their homes. ´We basically evacuated the

Nearly a year before President Obama declared a humanitarian crisis on the border, a team of experts arrived at the Fort Brown patrol station in Brownsville, Tex., and discovered a makeshift transportation depot for a deluge of foreign children. Thirty Border Patrol agents were assigned in August 2013 to drive the children to off-site showers, wash their clothes and make them sandwiches. As soon as those children were placed in temporary shelters, more arrived. An average of 66 were apprehended each day on the border and more than 24,000 cycled through Texas patrol stations in 2013. LONDON — ONE thing is certain: Whatever the outcome, this referendum campaign is changing Scotland irrevocably. Whether the Scots vote yes or no to independence on Sept. 18, their sense of what is possible for this small nation will have been transformed. Reporting on Scottish politics through wind and rain for almost 40 years, I have covered three referendums on self-government. The first, in 1979, offered a modest elected assembly: A slim majority of voters approved it, but the turnout fell short of the threshold required for the proposal to become law. The second, in 1997, proposed a restored Scottish Parliament

Sinn Féin, the political wing of the terrorist Provisional IRA, pulled a pro-Palestinian stunt in the Irish parliament, the Dáil, yesterday during which Gerry Adams, party leader and alleged former IRA leader, manoeuvred members of both government and opposition into standing for a minute’s silence as a show of solidarity with Gaza. Adams, in a move that was out of order, turned to the Speaker and said: "I ask you to invite the Dáil to stand for one minute in solidarity with the people of Gaza and the Middle East." In the 1966 film A Man For All Seasons, which depicts Sir Thomas More’s steadfast disapproval of King Henry VIII’s marital infidelities, More stirringly defends the rule of law. Rebutting his son-in-law, who says he would hypothetically “cut down every law in England” to find the devil, More asks, “And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned ’round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat?” More argues that abandoning equal enforcement of the law imperils all citizens. In a little-noticed action, the U.N. General Assembly on April 2, 2013, adopted by “majority vote” an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) with the objective of regulating the international trade in conventional arms, from small arms to major military equipment. The treaty’s lofty objectives were to foster peace and security by limiting uncontrolled destabilizing arms transfer to areas of conflict. In particular, it was also meant to prevent countries that abuse human rights from acquiring arms. While the record of the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty discussions makes no mention of it, the genesis for regulating the unrestrained transfer of conventional arms to

There she beats the drums for the bureau to serve as a “cop on the beat” to protect consumers from undisciplined capitalism. The bureau is mired in undisciplined corruption. Created through the passage of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street regulation act, the bureau was crafted with uniquely undemocratic features. The bureau pays its

Back home, I asked an Irish-American friend why Ireland seemed less engaged — and enraged — than New York. He fairly spat out his answer: “That’s because if they talk about it, they’ll have to do something about it.” My friend’s disgust came to mind as I watched President Obama dance around Russian involvement in the downing

He was 86. He was found dead of natural causes at his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday. Police responded to a call around 8 p.m. PDT and confirmed Garner’s identity from family members, Iniquez told The Associated Press. There was no immediate word on a more specific cause of death. Garner had suffered a stroke in May 2008, just weeks after his 80th birthday.
