Donkey suicide bomb stopped

Hamas militants sent a donkey laden with explosives on a suicide mission in one of the most unconventional tactics yet seen in the fighting in Gaza, the Israeli army has said. Troops said they were forced to open fire on the animal - blowing it up - as it approached their position in the southern city of Rafah, near the Egyptian border. The Israeli army had received prior intelligence that militants were going to try to use animals to carry out attacks, according to a press release on the Israeli Defence Forces website. Israeli military officials say Friday night´s incident

Former WWF wrestler and Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura brought a lawsuit for defamation against Chris Kyle, the Navy SEAL sharpshooter and coauthor of American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History. The book was published on January 17, 2012, under the William Morrow imprint of HarperCollins. With a little help from Morrow’s publicity department, Kyle was featured on segments of the Today Show and the O’Reilly Factor. A veteran of four tours in Iraq, Kyle’s overlay of modesty and bravado on top of his obvious heroism helped propel the book onto the best-seller list upon publication.

A raging wildfire in central Washington has wiped most of a small town off the map - destroying 100 homes as it whips out of control across 260 square miles of dry forest - and fears are now growing that it will claim a second community. The Carlton Complex fire grew by nearly ten times Friday as four fires horrifically merged into one and exploded across the small village of Pateros, officials said. Residents of the town of Malott and outlying areas of nearby Brewster have been evacuated as flames rages only miles from their homes. ´We basically evacuated the

Nearly a year before President Obama declared a humanitarian crisis on the border, a team of experts arrived at the Fort Brown patrol station in Brownsville, Tex., and discovered a makeshift transportation depot for a deluge of foreign children. Thirty Border Patrol agents were assigned in August 2013 to drive the children to off-site showers, wash their clothes and make them sandwiches. As soon as those children were placed in temporary shelters, more arrived. An average of 66 were apprehended each day on the border and more than 24,000 cycled through Texas patrol stations in 2013. While Gazans, their Hamas leadership and pro-Palestinian supporters around the world condemn Israel´s Operation Protective Edge, now turning into a ground invasion, its time Muslims examined the Other Occupation: the inexorable advance of political Islamism over Islam. Increasingly, Islam has been usurped by political Islamism, manifest in the current Israel–Palestine conflict as a war between Hamas and the Israel. Elsewhere, Islamism drives conflicts between ISIS and Iraqi government forces, the Pakistani Taliban and the Pakistan Army, the Afghani Taliban and would-be Afghani democratic leaders, Nigeria´s Boko Haram Islamists and the Nigerian government, the Jama´at Al-Nusra and the Syrian Regime, the Iranian

Scottish Independence Is Inevitable

LONDON — ONE thing is certain: Whatever the outcome, this referendum campaign is changing Scotland irrevocably. Whether the Scots vote yes or no to independence on Sept. 18, their sense of what is possible for this small nation will have been transformed. Reporting on Scottish politics through wind and rain for almost 40 years, I have covered three referendums on self-government. The first, in 1979, offered a modest elected assembly: A slim majority of voters approved it, but the turnout fell short of the threshold required for the proposal to become law. The second, in 1997, proposed a restored Scottish Parliament

Sinn Féin, the political wing of the terrorist Provisional IRA, pulled a pro-Palestinian stunt in the Irish parliament, the Dáil, yesterday during which Gerry Adams, party leader and alleged former IRA leader, manoeuvred members of both government and opposition into standing for a minute’s silence as a show of solidarity with Gaza. Adams, in a move that was out of order, turned to the Speaker and said: "I ask you to invite the Dáil to stand for one minute in solidarity with the people of Gaza and the Middle East." At the same time, the Sinn Féin deputies held up

The men and women who volunteer to serve in the military are brave and selfless. They don´t deserve to be served by a Department of Veterans Affairs more concerned with manipulating data for financial gain than with solving problems and serving our veterans with the best possible medical care. We have arrived at a unique moment of clarity and purpose. Thanks to the efforts of courageous whistleblowers, dishonesty by some in the VA has been exposed. It is up to those of us on the Joint House-Senate VA Conference Committee to propose patient-centered reforms that rid the VA of its

In the 1966 film A Man For All Seasons, which depicts Sir Thomas More’s steadfast disapproval of King Henry VIII’s marital infidelities, More stirringly defends the rule of law. Rebutting his son-in-law, who says he would hypothetically “cut down every law in England” to find the devil, More asks, “And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned ’round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat?” More argues that abandoning equal enforcement of the law imperils all citizens. In a little-noticed action, the U.N. General Assembly on April 2, 2013, adopted by “majority vote” an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) with the objective of regulating the international trade in conventional arms, from small arms to major military equipment. The treaty’s lofty objectives were to foster peace and security by limiting uncontrolled destabilizing arms transfer to areas of conflict. In particular, it was also meant to prevent countries that abuse human rights from acquiring arms. While the record of the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty discussions makes no mention of it, the genesis for regulating the unrestrained transfer of conventional arms to

Four years ago, the big-government liberals got the agency of their dreams, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. It was the brainchild of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who was a Harvard law professor in real life and a Cherokee Indian in her dreams before she was elected to the U.S. Senate. There she beats the drums for the bureau to serve as a “cop on the beat” to protect consumers from undisciplined capitalism. The bureau is mired in undisciplined corruption. Created through the passage of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street regulation act, the bureau was crafted with uniquely undemocratic features. The bureau pays its

On a trip to Ireland during the 1990s, I was struck by how little public discussion there was about “The Troubles.” Coming from New York, I expected the dispute between Catholic Ireland and Protestant Northern Ireland to be the topic of the day, every day. Back home, I asked an Irish-American friend why Ireland seemed less engaged — and enraged — than New York. He fairly spat out his answer: “That’s because if they talk about it, they’ll have to do something about it.” My friend’s disgust came to mind as I watched President Obama dance around Russian involvement in the downing

He was 86. He was found dead of natural causes at his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday. Police responded to a call around 8 p.m. PDT and confirmed Garner’s identity from family members, Iniquez told The Associated Press. There was no immediate word on a more specific cause of death. Garner had suffered a stroke in May 2008, just weeks after his 80th birthday.

In their denouncements of the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby ruling, Hillary Clinton and other Democrats have been accused of pandering to single women — the so-called “Beyoncé voter” demographic, as one Fox News commentator sniggered. But you know what? If you were running for office, you’d be wooing us single ladies, too. After all, we — unlike those democratic deadbeats known as men — show up to vote. Maybe that’s a little harsh. But the truth is that women vote in higher numbers than men do. We have in every presidential election since 1980, and the gap has widened over
