At 4, Consumer Financial Protection
Bureau is still unaccountable

Four years ago, the big-government liberals got the agency of their dreams, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. It was the brainchild of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who was a Harvard law professor in real life and a Cherokee Indian in her dreams before she was elected to the U.S. Senate. There she beats the drums for the bureau to serve as a “cop on the beat” to protect consumers from undisciplined capitalism. The bureau is mired in undisciplined corruption. Created through the passage of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street regulation act, the bureau was crafted with uniquely undemocratic features. The bureau pays its

On a trip to Ireland during the 1990s, I was struck by how little public discussion there was about “The Troubles.” Coming from New York, I expected the dispute between Catholic Ireland and Protestant Northern Ireland to be the topic of the day, every day. Back home, I asked an Irish-American friend why Ireland seemed less engaged — and enraged — than New York. He fairly spat out his answer: “That’s because if they talk about it, they’ll have to do something about it.” My friend’s disgust came to mind as I watched President Obama dance around Russian involvement in the downing

LOS ANGELES — Actor James Garner, whose whimsical style in the 1950s TV Western “Maverick” led to a stellar career in TV and films such as “The Rockford Files” and his Oscar-nominated “Murphy’s Romance,” has died, police said. He was 86. He was found dead of natural causes at his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday. Police responded to a call around 8 p.m. PDT and confirmed Garner’s identity from family members, Iniquez told The Associated Press. There was no immediate word on a more specific cause of death. Garner had suffered a stroke in May 2008, just weeks after his 80th birthday.

In August of 2010, almost three years before Lois Lerner announced at a law conference that the IRS had indeed targeted certain groups, Z Street filed a lawsuit contending they were being targeted by the IRS because they disagreed with the President’s policy on Israel. In fact Z Street filed their suit against the IRS after an agent allegedly told them his direction was to “give special scrutiny to organizations connected to Israel,” and that the files of some of those “organizations were sent to a special unit in Washington, D.C. to determine whether the activities of the organization contradicted

Soon your TV screen will be full of apocalyptic images of crumbling bridges, giant potholes and assorted wheelchair-bound grannies plunging over cliffs — the hacks’ vision of a bleak future without automatic annual increases in the gasoline tax. Vote No on Question 1 ... or you die. That’s the hackerama’s pitch on this referendum question, and of course it’s very believable. The tax-fattened hyenas simply don’t have enough money. But if you’d like to know the truth about how the transportation hacks are spending your dough, check out the new report from the state Inspector General, “Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Fleet

In their denouncements of the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby ruling, Hillary Clinton and other Democrats have been accused of pandering to single women — the so-called “Beyoncé voter” demographic, as one Fox News commentator sniggered. But you know what? If you were running for office, you’d be wooing us single ladies, too. After all, we — unlike those democratic deadbeats known as men — show up to vote. Maybe that’s a little harsh. But the truth is that women vote in higher numbers than men do. We have in every presidential election since 1980, and the gap has widened over

Notorious White House party crasher Tareq Salahi is back – and this time he’s found another high-profile event to barge into: the race for Virginia’s 7th congressional district. Salahi told ABC News that he is planning to jump into the race and face off against Republican candidate Dave Brat who won a surprise primary victory against former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. He’ll be running as a candidate of the Independent Green Party of Virginia, which describes itself as “fiscally conservative” and “socially responsible.” The Independent Green Party advocates for fewer cars on the road and more trains. Salahi said he turned in

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz told a cheering crowd of conservatives Saturday night that the next U.S. president should shutter the much-maligned Internal Revenue Service and turn the agency´s 110,000 employees loose to police the U.S.-Mexico border. ´That´s slightly tongue-in-cheek,´ he said in Denver at the Western Conservative Summit. ´But think about it for a second: You travel thousands of miles, you cross over and see 110,000 IRS agents? You´d turn around and go home!´ His speech before a partisan crowd of hooting and hollering Republicans was the main draw at a conference that brought an estimated 3,500 to hear

Recent Supreme Court decisions should remind all Americans of the importance of freedom of religion and of redress mechanisms embedded in the U.S. system to protect this right when threatened or undermined. Many in other countries are not as fortunate. Countless innocents worldwide are persecuted for the peaceful practice of their faith. Some are subjected to torture, beatings, forced marriage, rape, imprisonment, enslavement, and forced resettlement. Others, such as MeriamYahia Ibrahim Ishag, a Sudanese woman who converted to Christianity, are sentenced to death for their beliefs. Faced with this grim reality, Congress was compelled to act and the International Religious

There was something almost beautiful about the white ribbons tied to stakes as they fluttered in the wind; some sitting amid a sea of golden corn, others poking from clusters of yellow and blue wildflowers. But then you saw that these were the most macabre of markings, each one representing the final landing place for hundreds of human beings slaughtered in the sky last week. For this is the grimmest of graveyards. Here on the gentle rolling hills of eastern Ukraine, beside an abandoned Soviet-era poultry farm, lay the innocent people whose lives were extinguished so suddenly in an explosion

How have political ethics have replaced Biblically based morality in the minds of educated young people? Consider Alex. She is a 27-year-old woman in the process of earning a PsyD degree to become a psychologist. She mentioned she was having a difficult time finding appropriate men to date and was considering an online dating service. I suggested that if she goes that route she needs to be clear about what characteristics are unacceptable to her. She thought for a moment then said, “One thing I cannot tolerate is homophobia.” Of all the advantages a worthy life partner could bring to this young

On Thursday, Russia’s expeditionary army in Eastern Ukraine shot a missile at what they thought was a Ukrainian jet, according to U.S. intelligence. It wasn’t a Ukrainian jet. It was a Malaysia Airlines passenger plane, flying its normal commercial route that happened to take it over Ukraine. As per usual. And it appears the Russians shot it down, killing 298 people. Vladimir Putin didn’t even bother denying it – he blamed the Ukrainians. “This tragedy would not have occurred if there were peace in that country, or in any case, if hostilities had not resumed in southeast Ukraine,” Putin said. So his forces

I was thinking the world could not be more absurd when I read that a Hamas official announced to Arab Israelis they should not be fearful of their attacks because the missiles were designed to kill Jews only. This development is so outstanding that the Norwegians -- citizens of probably the most anti-Semitic country in Europe -- who decide the winners of the Nobel peace prize undoubtedly secretly voted on the spot to award it to Hamas this year. To serve as Defence Secretary is an awesome responsibility and great privilege. Keeping Britain safe in a dangerous world is the job of our magnificent Armed Forces; keeping them properly equipped and supported is my priority. The horrific scenes we witnessed this week when Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 came down in Eastern Ukraine remind us that we live in an increasingly unpredictable and fragile world. A world where instability in the Middle East, in the Horn of Africa or on the frontiers of Europe can still have the severest consequences for British citizens. It is important that we get answers

Incoming House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) criticized President Obama for saying he would use his "pen and phone" to accomplish his agenda without the help of Congress. Scalise, the former leader of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC), called on Obama to pressure the Democratically led Senate to adopt more bills that have been passed by the House. "Every time they say no — every time they pick their interests over yours — they hold our economy hostage, and with it, our chance to make sure our kids will have the same shot at the American dream," Scalise said in the

Republicans love fracking in Colorado — and it could help them flip a critical Senate seat this fall. The onslaught against Democratic Sen. Mark Udall (Colo.) reached a fever pitch this week when Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) had to cancel a special legislative session meant to keep two hydraulic fracturing initiatives backed by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) off the November ballot. Udall, who had stayed out of the fray on the two measures, was forced to take a side much to the GOP´s glee. Now, with Colorado as one of the top natural gas producing states in the nation, the fracking controversy

Presumably there are at least a few politicians in the great Western capitals who have some idea of how to get a grip on the current global chaos. Perhaps at some point they will let us know what it is. At the moment, all that we are getting is banalities and obfuscation, which seem to be a cover for total panic. Apart from the obvious words of condolence and horror over the shooting down of a civilian airliner, no one seems to have anything meaningful to say about an incident that could have the diplomatic significance of the sinking of
