Parents of former POW
Bergdahl strained by his silence

SALMON Idaho - Freed war prisoner Bowe Bergdahl has not yet reached out to his parents who campaigned hard for his freedom and who hold out hope he will eventually contact them once fully recovered from trauma inflicted by his Taliban captors, a family friend said on Friday. Stefanie O´Neill, who is in regular contact with Bergdahl´s mother, said the U.S. soldier´s parents were strained both by their son´s silence since his May 31 release and because of death threats being investigated by the FBI. "Bob and Jani are under more strain than ever, but they are trying to be patient," O´Neill

MH17 disaster creates dilemma for
Putin over backing Ukraine´s rebels

The shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 has confronted Vladimir Putin with a dilemma he had sought to avoid: to continue to support the separatist insurgency in Ukraine in the face of a storm of international outrage, or cut the rebels off and allow them to be defeated by the government in Kiev. Until the plane was hit by an anti-aircraft missile on Thursday, killing nearly 300 people, the Russian president had tried to hedge his bets according to circumstances on the battlefield and western pressure. He moved troops and tanks away from the border after the Ukrainian presidential elections

It is a bad sign when your political defense can be summed up with the phrase “things could be worse.” It is a very bad sign when that weak excuse applies to not only an incumbent president’s economic policy but also to his foreign policy. Job growth is only a mirage and economic growth is anemic at best, but the president and his Democratic allies are still trying to convince us that our economy is in a good place and getting better. Six years after President Obama was elected, Democrats still have to fall back on reminding us that we were

Top AIDS official says six colleagues

Melbourne - International AIDS Society president Francoise Barre-Sinoussi on Saturday said six colleagues heading for a global conference in Melbourne were on a Malaysian plane that crashed over Ukraine, not 100 as reports suggested. "The number that we have confirmed through our contacts with authorities in Australia, in Malaysia, and Dutch authorities as well is six people. It may be a little bit more, but not the numbers that have been announced," she said. Australian newspapers on Friday said as many as 100 medical researchers, scientists, doctors and activists were on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 that went down en route

Time for Hillary Clinton to drop the softball interviews, $250,000 speeches and “I might stay home and be a grandmother” shtick. Elizabeth Warren already has three grandchildren. Doesn’t seem to be slowing her down. The Massachusetts senator was at it again yesterday, soaking in the “Run, Liz, Run” chants at a gathering of super liberals in Michigan. Where was Hillary? Spending quality time with Charlie Rose and making plans to pick up another massive speaking fee in Boston next week. Clinton should have been at Netroots Nation because she would have seen what a real presidential contender sounds like. Warren may not be

Russian missile smuggled into

Secretly intercepted chatter suggests a deadly Russian missile system was smuggled across the border to Ukraine just hours before a Malaysia Airlines flight was shot down. The Ukrainian Security Service released the incriminating tapes Friday as President Obama threatened to crank up economic sanctions against Russia and the probe of the mass murder continued. Investigators descended Friday on the sunflower fields near the Ukraine-Russia border to recover evidence and to determine exactly who was behind the attack on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, killing all 298 people aboard. The United Nations said 80 of those killed were children. World leaders demanded an immediate ceasefire in

Unbridled horses tend to think they are wild. For that reason, fences were made. Politicians unbounded by law -- or who think themselves unbounded by law -- tend toward running wild, toward the commission of deeper and wider intrusions on personal liberty. As Americans, we are now living thorough a consequential moment. Like it or not, we are witness to accelerating executive abuse. Lack of legal fencing, or an unwillingness to use legal fencing that exists, leads inexorably to runaway behavior. Uncorrected and deterred, small breaches of accountability accelerate. We all know this. We know this of our everyday lives, even

In a column for the Washington Examiner, John L. Casey joins the herd that has gigged Republicans generally for being climate-change “deniers,” and Marco Rubio specifically for his recent climate comments, which were in fact the very soul of reasonableness. To refresh memories, Rubio said he doesn’t believe the case had been made that human activity is causing as much global warming as scientist are reported to be claiming. (I say “reported to be claiming” because what we know about the scientific “consensus” on climate comes to us through the unreliable agency of journalists, who are prone to revise and extend

U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Friday that the United States cannot rule out that Russia helped in the launch of the surface-to-air missile that shot down a Malaysia Airlines jet over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. Power said the U.S. believes the plane was likely downed by an SA-11 missile fired from an area in eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists. She said Russia has provided SA-11s and other heavy weapons to the separatists. Britain´s U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, who called the emergency meeting, was more emphatic on assessing

Earlier this month, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) testified before Congress that federal agencies made more than $100 billion in improper payments last year. To put that number in perspective, $100 billion is more than the combined total budgets of the Coast Guard, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, Border Patrol, Secret Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency — a lot more. The GAO report is the latest example of why Washington must get serious about eliminating waste, fraud and abuse, and enacting sweeping reforms and spending cuts before any more damage is inflicted on American taxpayers. Improper payments result when

As America endures a massive invasion of illegal immigrants at our southern border, many liberals, whether in the media or on Capitol Hill, are attempting to claim the moral high ground in this matter and remind us that this is all about “the children.” Slamming those protesting and blocking buses attempting to bring the illegal immigrants into their communities, CNN anchor Ashleigh Banfield, full of false piety, declared “It’s devastating. And God help if you’re ever in need of help and you show up and there’s a bus telling you to get out. This is America. Just read what we’re about.”

President Bill Clinton´s advisers carefully considered how to explain the president´s military action against Iraq in 1998 as the House was debating his impeachment, according to records from the Clinton White House that were released Friday. The documents also touch upon Osama bin Laden, consideration of military action in Haiti in 1994 and preparationsfor Supreme Court nomination hearings. The National Archives released about 1,000 pages of previously restricted documents from Clinton´s two terms, part of about 20,000 pages of Clinton records that have been disseminated since February. The papers, which are stored at the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Arkansas,

Bowe Bergdahl has been returned to “active duty.” Apparently, that means a desk job while the Army considers what should be done with this young enlisted soldier. Bergdahl was held for five years by the Taliban since walking away from his post one night in 2009. President Obama greeted Bergdahl’s relieved parents in Rose Garden at the White House in a move that was widely criticized. And that was even before Americans learned that the Obama administration had traded young Bergdahl for five of the most murderous Taliban detainees from our facility at Guantanamo Bay. Duty. There seems to be much confusion

Barack Obama’s unflappability was a selling point on the 2008 campaign trail, with aides proudly donning T-shirts reading, “No Drama Obama.” But as much of an asset as it was for the candidate, Mr. Obama’s steady-as-she-goes approach to life can cause problems as president. This conflict was on full display Thursday, as Mr. Obama decided to stick to his regular schedule amid news reports of a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet crash in Ukraine that killed nearly 300 people. That decision generated a split-screen aspect to Mr. Obama’s day, as TV networks broke into regular programming to broadcast pictures of smoldering plane wreckage

If you’re looking for a reason for the supposed impoverishment of Gaza, look no further than the maze of tunnels – some of them miles long — Hamas has built under their territory and beyond their borders into Israel. It’s the jihadist version of Boston’s “Big Dig.” The construction is so extensive that nearly every able-bodied man must have been employed in the occupation of tunnel-building, not to mention the huge diversion of funds, much of it donated by the West, for material like concrete originally trucked into Gaza by the Israelis and others for “humanitarian purposes.” A huge complex is

It was not even a month ago that Vladimir Putin stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the elected leaders of the Western world to commemorate the D-Day invasion. I hope whoever issued that invitation has the decency to feel some embarrassment today. Through the past eight months of escalating Russian violence against Ukraine, too many European governments have treated the Ukraine issue as remote and marginal: regrettable, yes, but not a threat to the peace of the continent. It was more important, they felt, to sustain a normal relationship with Russia. That illusion died yesterday along with the murdered passengers of Malaysia Airlines

I´m pretty confident that if President Barack Obama could reverse one thing about his presidency it would be the Republican wave in 2010. It stalled his agenda, it empowered the right, it prefigured damaging budget fights, it turned a bunch of states into right wing laboratories and allowed Republicans to gerrymander themselves into control of the House for many cycles in a row. The stakes were very large and he and Democrats were not well prepared. Relative to a political disaster of that scale, I agree with Hoover Institution fellow Tod Lindberg, who argued on The New Republic website Wednesday

President Obama styles himself a wit, and some of his best material lately has to do with his abuse of his powers. “As long as they’re doing nothing, I’m not going to apologize for doing something,” Obama riffed to a crowd at the Georgetown Waterfront Park in Washington, DC, on July 1, referring to Republicans. “So sue me.” Hilarity ensued. He cracked them up in Austin, Texas, last week. “You hear some of them,” he said, “?‘Sue him.’ ‘Impeach him.’ Really? Really? For what? You’re going to sue me for doing my job?” One can only imagine the comedic possibilities in his 9-0

The shooting down of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine may finally force Washington and Europe to wake up to the danger of the conflict there escalating into full-blown war between Russia and Ukraine. This potential cataclysm has been inching closer to reality in the last week. The Ukrainian security council has said Russian weapons and troops have been crossing into Ukraine, and military aircraft from both sides have engaged each other. Documented videos purport to show artillery fire into Ukraine from the Russian side. On Sunday the Russian media went berserk with reports of the first casualty of a Russian civilian

First of all, it’s pronounced chick-en-gun-yuh. Now that the first locally-acquired cases of the mosquito-borne virus have been reported in Florida, you’re probably wondering what is and why you should care. So we broke it down. The chikungunya virus is new to the Americas, though it’s long been found in Asia, Africa and Europe. It was discovered in the Caribbean islands late last year, and has since made its way to the continental United States by way of mosquito-bitten travelers returning from vacation. Before July 15, there were 357 reported cases of chikungunya in the United States, including 121 in Puerto Rico,

NEW YORK -- The jetliner is much more than a machine used to get from one spot to another. It often carries deep symbolism, especially when flying for a national airline. It can represent hope, modernity and a country´s power. And when things go wrong it, that once mighty plane can bring about deep national disgrace. Malaysia now finds itself grappling with the horrific - and extremely unusual - loss of two of its airplanes, just four months apart. It´s a sad coincidence that also stings. Even in a city long plagued by violent crime, the bank robbery Wednesday left veteran police officers stunned. The robbers led police on a wild hourlong chase, holding hostages from the bank as human shields. Periodically, police say, the robbers would slow down, waiting for pursuing officers to come into view before opening fire with an AK-47-style assault rifle and other weapons. The pursuit ended in a minute-long gun battle that left two suspects and one hostage dead. Police said a third suspect survived uninjured because he used the hostage, Misty Holt-Singh, to shield himself from officers´ bullets. Singh had gone into
