BAGHDAD - Islamist insurgents have issued an ultimatum to northern Iraq´s dwindling Christian population to either convert to Islam, pay a religious levy or face death, according to a statement distributed in the militant-controlled city of Mosul. The statement issued by the Islamic State, the al Qaeda offshoot which led last month´s lightning assault to capture swathes of north Iraq, and seen by Reuters, said the ruling would come into effect on Saturday. It said Christians who wanted to remain in the "caliphate" that the Islamic State declared this month in parts of Iraq and Syria must agree to abide by terms

President Barack Obama has tagged the growing inequality of income over the past three or four decades as "the defining challenge of our time," an often-repeated claim recently echoed by economist Thomas Piketty in "Capital in the Twenty-First Century." Numerous social and economic factors explain why the income and wealth gaps have grown, from the rise in family breakdown, to the incentives embedded in government welfare programs, to growth in executive control over their own compensation. However, there are reasons for the gaps that have gone largely, if not completely, unrecognized. These explanations make the relative growth in the income (and wealth)

Washington - US President Barack Obama telephoned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday to voice concerns about the crisis in Gaza amid an Israeli ground offensive. Obama said that while the US supports Israel´s right to defend itself, "the United States and our friends and allies are deeply concerned about the risks of further escalation and the loss of more innocent life." Israeli troops launched an offensive on the Gaza periphery aimed at destroying Hamas´s network of cross-border tunnels on the 11th day of an assault in which 274 Palestinians, including many children, have been killed. Across his remarkably successful presidency, Ronald Reagan repeatedly made the link between the U.S. economy and U.S. international security and defense. He consistently argued that weakness at home leads to weakness abroad. Reagan was aiming at the dismal Carter years. But he understood for all times that economic strength at home sends a powerful signal for international security overseas. When Reagan went to Reykjavik to meet with Gorbachev, he believed the resurgent American economy would hammer the nails on the coffin of Soviet communism. And he explained to Gorbachev that if the Soviets didn´t come to the negotiating table with nuclear weapons,

Cultural Inertia: Remember how 45 years ago we were suddenly able to say: "If we can send a man to the moon, why can´t we (fill in the blank)"? If only we could say the same today. It´s worth remembering Neil Armstrong´s July 21, 1969 "giant leap for mankind," if only as a measure of what the country used to be able to accomplish, but increasingly can´t do today. When President Kennedy announced his goal of "sending a man to the moon and returning him safely to earth" in less than nine years, it was a laughably audacious promise. By May 1961,

CBS put on an anti-religion jeremiad early Thursday morning on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson: a feminist musician who likes “wearing and making something Satanic since music is so not right now.” Piano-banging rock singer Kristeen Young made her late-night TV debut, accompanied by Foo Fighters stars Dave Grohl and Pat Smear. She sang the song “Pearl of a Girl” that criticizes Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, but most gratuitously proclaims about Jesus “I wish the virgin would’ve had an abortion.” It’s a bit hard to make out in Kristeen´s ranty performance on CBS, but here are the anti-religious lyrics: I never

Ferguson-Florissant, Riverview Gardens and St. Louis Public Schools are among the school districts in the region that are planning to offer free lunches to all students, regardless of need, through a federal program new to Missouri schools this year. Some of the districts had been offering free breakfast for all students and will continue to do so. Now, district officials are participating in the so-called Community Eligibility Provision funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The program is part of the Hungry-Free Kids Act of 2010, which was projected to boost federal spending on nutrition programs by $79 million over

This fall, voters will get another chance to register their opinion on Obamacare. President Obama’s signature legislation is causing health costs to spike, federal spending to soar, doctors to leave their profession, millions of Americans to lose their health plans, and millions more to be coerced into buying overpriced insurance against their will. For those who care about quality and affordability in health care, fiscal solvency, the separation of powers, liberty, or economic prosperity—which is to say pretty much everyone—Obamacare is a disaster, and it must be repealed and replaced with a well-conceived conservative alternative. Yet, despite having broken with more

It was the tweet that went viral around the world and all over the web. The one notable exception where the tweet remains unmentioned is at the Boston Globe. So what´s so strange about that? It´s because the author of the tweet is Boston Globe reporter, Matt Viser. Perhaps it is the subject matter that makes the Boston Globe reluctant to refer to the tweet although it is already widely known on the Web. The UK Daily Mail also featured it. So will the Boston Globe eventually follow suit? The matter is open to question because Viser´s tweet was a devastating

The IRS said under oath Friday that former agency official Lois Lerner’s hard drive was destroyed and recycled, echoing earlier testimony from its commissioner. In its most extensive comments yet on Lerner’s hard drive, the agency said in court filings Friday that the hard drive was destroyed in 2011 to protect confidential taxpayer information. Before that, the IRS said, the hard drive underwent a process designed to permanently erase stored data. That process occurred after a series of IRS technical officers examined Lerner’s hard drive, and found that it couldn’t be restored after a crash. The IRS’s court filings came

During an appearance on MSNBC’s PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton Friday evening, Salon columnist Joan Walsh took on Sen. McCain called Obama “cowardly” for refusing to intervene in Ukraine, but Walsh turned that word around on him. “It’s just been cowardly,” McCain said on Fox News’ Hannity last night. “It’s a cowardly administration that we failed to give the Ukrainians weapons with which to defend themselves,” he continued, suggesting that the Russian separatists who allegedly shot down the plane “may not even have

More than 24 hours after the crash, the bodies lay there untouched, with nobody able to say who´s in charge and whether the dead would ever be treated with dignity. Documents from the Bill Clinton presidency that were publicly released Friday reveal the administration´s strategy -- and the challenges top aides encountered -- in readying Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her Senate confirmation hearing after her nomination for Supreme Court. One document gives aides suggestions for prepping Ginsburg, saying the nominee had "incredible powers of recollection" and "will clearly know all of the law" but was a "very slow answerer" whose answers were "typically shorter than the questions." The memo tells aides to ask her short practice questions leading up to the hearing, since Ginsburg was reportedly worried that if questions

(Video) The Washington Free Beacon has put together a greatest hits compilation of the Democrats’ border security quotes. Why would the Democrats continuously insist that the border is secure? Perhaps because Republicans insist on having a secure border before discussing any type of immigration reform legislation. Democrats don’t think people will catch up to this at some point? The PR game that carried Obama – health care lies and all – to the White House is showing significant signs of incompetent wear and tear

Remember last summer, when President Obama appointed Joe Biden to head the Campaign to Cut Waste to root out wasteful government spending? Like you, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the results of the comprehensive report that’s surely coming any day now. In the meantime, it seems like he’s adding to the list of things to root out. Last month it was reported that every weekend he gets a lift from D.C. to his home in Wilmington, Delaware, via Air Force Two — the V.P.’s airplane — and Marine Two — the V.P.’s helicopter. And he often gets a mid-weekend lift back

President Obama on Friday called the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 an “outrage of unspeakable proportions,” declared it a “wake-up call” for timid European leaders, and all but laid blame for the tragedy directly at the doorstep of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Obama’s blunt language, delivered in the White House briefing room from behind a lectern with the presidential seal, offered a stark contrast to his muddled public handling of the disaster a day earlier. As the news broke on Thursday, the White House signaled that the president had first learned about the world-shaking events from Putin at the

A Russia Today reporter based in London has resigned with immediate effect in protest at the station’s coverage of yesterday’s plane crash in Ukraine. Sara Firth had worked at Russia Today for five years, joining the Russian government-funded station in Moscow straight after doing an MA in journalism at City University in London. She has since been posted in London. Firth described the Malaysia Airlines flight crash coverage as “the straw that broke the camel’s back for me” and handed in her resignation this morning. Russia Today has been criticised for suggesting the crash is the fault of Ukraine.
