Ginsburg confirmation strategy

Documents from the Bill Clinton presidency that were publicly released Friday reveal the administration´s strategy -- and the challenges top aides encountered -- in readying Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her Senate confirmation hearing after her nomination for Supreme Court. One document gives aides suggestions for prepping Ginsburg, saying the nominee had "incredible powers of recollection" and "will clearly know all of the law" but was a "very slow answerer" whose answers were "typically shorter than the questions." The memo tells aides to ask her short practice questions leading up to the hearing, since Ginsburg was reportedly worried that if questions

Pet dogs and birds were among the casualties when flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, a list of the aircraft´s cargo has revealed. Two pet dogs, four pigeons and five other live birds were being transported in the cargo of the Malaysian Airlines flight as it was blasted out of the sky killing all 298 passengers - including ten Britons. A list of items checked into the cargo hold of the Boeing 777 has also revealed that nearly 1,400kg of lithium batteries, ´urgent´ Malaysian diplomatic papers and medical packages were on board. San Francisco -Hundreds of conservative and libertarian political operatives and techies are gathering this weekend in the heart of liberal California to try to bridge the digital disadvantage that dogged the GOP´s presidential candidates in the last two White House campaigns. “We think there is a big opportunity to connect the liberty-minded conservatives and libertarians in Silicon Valley and around the country with the campaigns and the causes that they really care about,” said Garrett Johnson, one of the co-founders of Lincoln Labs, which organized the inaugural Reboot conference that is taking place this weekend in San Francisco. Delusional Democrats Who Lied

(Video) The Washington Free Beacon has put together a greatest hits compilation of the Democrats’ border security quotes. Why would the Democrats continuously insist that the border is secure? Perhaps because Republicans insist on having a secure border before discussing any type of immigration reform legislation. Democrats don’t think people will catch up to this at some point? The PR game that carried Obama – health care lies and all – to the White House is showing significant signs of incompetent wear and tear

President Obama announced Friday that an American was among the dead in the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crash in Ukraine. Quinn Lucas Schansman was a dual citizen of the United States and The Netherlands, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Twitter. Photos on social-media accounts show a fun-loving college student who enjoyed hanging out with friends, had a girlfriend and liked to relax with a beer or a smoke, especially after exams. Some news reports say he was 19 when he died. Schansman was on his way to meet family members who were vacationing in Malaysia when his plane was

Back in 2007 Forbes magazine purchased 51 percent of the then-wildly growing website RealClearPolitics.com. Now, in 2014, a Chinese company has purchased a majority position in Forbes itself. A highly visited site, RealClearPolitics.com was created in Chicago in the year 2000 by John McIntyre and Tom Bevan and grew at an amazing rate, becoming one of the most trafficked political sites on the web. By 2007 Forbes Media took notice and purchased a 51 percent share in the site. Upon the purchase, Forbes Media decided to let McIntyre and Bevan continue to run the site as they had always done

While walking through the halls of the progressive Netroots Nation conference in Detroit, Mich., Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) bolted away from a reporter question about Israel’s Thursday evening invasion of the Gaza Strip. “Senator, as you know, Israel invaded Gaza today and we just wanted to get your thoughts on that,” Capitol City Project’s Joe Schoffstall said, shortly after she greeted the reporter with a smile. “No,” Warren flatly replied while quickly walking away. Other reporters note that this isn’t the first time Warren has dodged a hallway question about, well… any subject:

Remember last summer, when President Obama appointed Joe Biden to head the Campaign to Cut Waste to root out wasteful government spending? Like you, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the results of the comprehensive report that’s surely coming any day now. In the meantime, it seems like he’s adding to the list of things to root out. Last month it was reported that every weekend he gets a lift from D.C. to his home in Wilmington, Delaware, via Air Force Two — the V.P.’s airplane — and Marine Two — the V.P.’s helicopter. And he often gets a mid-weekend lift back

Kiev, Ukraine - International monitors investigating the Malaysia Airlines crash in eastern Ukraine said Friday the team was not given full access to the site and was greeted with hostility by armed men guarding the scene. "It basically looks like the biggest crime scene in the world right now, guarded by a bunch of guys in uniform with heavy firepower who are quite inhospitable," Michael Bociurkiw, spokesman for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe team, told CNN´s Christiane Amanpour. President Obama on Friday called the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 an “outrage of unspeakable proportions,” declared it a “wake-up call” for timid European leaders, and all but laid blame for the tragedy directly at the doorstep of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Obama’s blunt language, delivered in the White House briefing room from behind a lectern with the presidential seal, offered a stark contrast to his muddled public handling of the disaster a day earlier. As the news broke on Thursday, the White House signaled that the president had first learned about the world-shaking events from Putin at the

WASHINGTON— President Barack Obama is foregoing his usual round of weekend golf at a Washington suburban military base. Instead, he and his family are choosing what is for them a rare woodland getaway: a weekend at the presidential mountaintop retreat of Camp David. The family was leaving Friday for the isolated and heavily guarded hideaway in Maryland´s Catoctin Mountains. The White House said the family weekend had already been planned and that he would return to the White House on Sunday. The escape from the White House caps a fierce week of foreign policy eruptions, highlighted by a downed commercial

Sara Firth had worked at Russia Today for five years, joining the Russian government-funded station in Moscow straight after doing an MA in journalism at City University in London. She has since been posted in London. Firth described the Malaysia Airlines flight crash coverage as “the straw that broke the camel’s back for me” and handed in her resignation this morning. Russia Today has been criticised for suggesting the crash is the fault of Ukraine.

The U.S. government not only failed to prosecute an illegal alien who stole the identity of his dead baby son—who had collected SSI before he died—but granted the father legal status to work in the United States. This one-time illegal alien, the Office of Inspector General for the Social Security Administration believes, fraudulently used his son’s Social Security Number for at least three years. Yet, he was not prosecuted, according to the IG’s office, because his case did not meet the prosecutorial guidelines of the U.S. attorney for New Jersey. In fact, this case might never have come to light had the IG

Malaysia Airlines disaster: The West

It might have seemed as if the rebellion by Russian separatists in Ukraine, fostered by Vladimir Putin, was a faraway war in a distant land. But when the passengers and crew of Flight MH17 flew into that war zone and became its latest victims, the global implications of the Ukrainian crisis became apparent. It is no longer “just” Russians and Ukrainians dying: as so often happens, an unstable region is putting the wider world at risk. Over the past few years, the West’s foreign policy has been marked by a sense of over-caution, even retreat. This is understandable. The death

So for the time being the shaky centre of Europe is holding. Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin are at least talking, while the Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko continues to show admirable restraint. But listen closely and it is hard not to hear the echoes of history in Europe’s collective failure to confront naked Russian aggression. For weeks now, the US--supported by Britain, to the irritation of many of our European allies--has been demanding tougher sanctions against Moscow, warning of what might happen if nothing was done to stop Putin giving heavy weapons to separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.

President Obama, obviously looking for a way to help Israelis and Palestinians, can start by setting a long-term goal: Demilitarize Gaza. That’s a better aim than sending Secretary of State John Kerry to the region to work out an Israel-Hamas cease-fire. “Armless in Gaza” has a ring to it. It’s a goal right up Obama’s alley, involving far-sightedness, international diplomacy, disarmament — each one of Obama’s claims to fame. He can call it a followup on the success in removing Syria’s chemical arms. It might even restore some of Washington’s lost respect. Consider: Kerry’s first instinct as Hamas-Israeli violence escalated this week was to

“UNDER capitalism”, ran the old Soviet-era joke, “man exploits man. Under communism it is just the opposite.” In fact new research suggests that the Soviet system inspired not just sarcasm but cheating too: in East Germany, at least, communism appears to have inculcated moral laxity. Lars Hornuf of the University of Munich and Dan Ariely, Ximena García-Rada and Heather Mann of Duke University ran an experiment last year to test Germans’ willingness to lie for personal gain. Some 250 Berliners were randomly selected to take part in a game where they could win up to €6 ($8). The game was simple

Hillary Clinton said she may not run for president because the modern American presidency may just be too tough of a job. She said the president has to do "all of the symbolic and ritualistic aspects" of the job in addition to the "hard work of politicking, lobbying, governing, operating." She said that the "job has gotten more difficult" because all those roles, including dealing with Congress
