Disarming Hamas: An opening for Obama
New York Post, by Benny Avni    Original Article

President Obama, obviously looking for a way to help Israelis and Palestinians, can start by setting a long-term goal: Demilitarize Gaza. That’s a better aim than sending Secretary of State John Kerry to the region to work out an Israel-Hamas cease-fire. “Armless in Gaza” has a ring to it. It’s a goal right up Obama’s alley, involving far-sightedness, international diplomacy, disarmament — each one of Obama’s claims to fame. He can call it a followup on the success in removing Syria’s chemical arms. It might even restore some of Washington’s lost respect. Consider: Kerry’s first instinct as Hamas-Israeli violence escalated this week was to

Malaysia Airlines is to refund fares for passengers no longer wishing to travel on the carrier, Sky News has confirmed. Previously booked passengers due to fly up to and including July 25 can seek a refund without incurring any penalty. The decision comes amid a wave of concern following the downing of MH17 over eastern Ukraine. It is unclear how many passengers will cancel their flights. Nevertheless, the refund will further harm the perception of the carrier both for passengers and investors. Shares in Malaysia Airlines closed down more than 10% on Friday. The Kuala Lumpur-listed company saw its stock fall more than 17% at one

“UNDER capitalism”, ran the old Soviet-era joke, “man exploits man. Under communism it is just the opposite.” In fact new research suggests that the Soviet system inspired not just sarcasm but cheating too: in East Germany, at least, communism appears to have inculcated moral laxity. Lars Hornuf of the University of Munich and Dan Ariely, Ximena García-Rada and Heather Mann of Duke University ran an experiment last year to test Germans’ willingness to lie for personal gain. Some 250 Berliners were randomly selected to take part in a game where they could win up to €6 ($8). The game was simple

Hillary Clinton said she may not run for president because the modern American presidency may just be too tough of a job. Acknowledging to PBS´s Charlie Rose that America´s president must be both the head of state and government, Clinton said the job of being president "has only gotten harder" and it is now an "all-consuming commitment." She said the president has to do "all of the symbolic and ritualistic aspects" of the job in addition to the "hard work of politicking, lobbying, governing, operating." She said that the "job has gotten more difficult" because all those roles, including dealing with Congress

MOSCOW — A top pro-Russia rebel commander in eastern Ukraine has given a bizarre version of events surrounding the Malaysian jetliner crash — suggesting many of the victims may have died days before the plane took off. The pro-rebel website Russkaya Vesna on Friday quoted Igor Girkin as saying he was told by people at the crash site that "a significant number of the bodies weren´t fresh," adding that he was told they were drained of blood and reeked of decomposition. The Malaysia Airlines Boeing-777 was shot down Thursday, killing all 298 people aboard. The plane was flying 10,000 meters above an

Hillary Clinton thanked the Republican establishment and its big business allies for taking on the Tea Party and defeating conservative candidates like Chris McDaniel in Mississippi´s June runoff. In a Thursday interview with Charlie Rose on PBS, Clinton said tea partiers and conservatives needed to be reined in. And she said it was about time the GOP establishment got a "wake-up call from the big business wing" that wants to continue the bipartisan big government policies that have made Washington, D.C.´s suburbs the country´s wealthiest "boomtown." "Finally, the Republican establishment and their business supporters have woken up," Clinton said, noting

Cash and jewellery is being stolen from victims of the Malaysian plane crash, Ukrainian politicians claim. The missile strike which brought down the MH17 flight left naked bodies strewn across fields surrounded by hundreds of possessions including children´s books, playing cards, slippers, letters and old vinyl records. But tonight it has been claimed that looters have descended on the distressing scene, stealing valuable goods from the 298 passengers and crew, who all died in the blast. Anton Gerashchenko, an advisor to the Kiev government, said: ´I have received information that terrorist death-hunters were collecting not only cash and jewellery of the crashed Boeing

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama plans to sign executive orders Monday prohibiting discrimination against gay and transgender workers in the federal government and its contracting agencies, without a new exemption that was requested by some religious organizations. Obama´s action comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court´s recent ruling in the Hobby Lobby case that allowed some religiously oriented businesses to opt out of the federal health care law´s requirement that contraception coverage be provided to workers at no extra charge. Senior administration officials said Friday that ruling has no impact on non-discrimination policies in federal hiring and contracting. They spoke

After the Malaysia Airlines passenger plane crashed on July 17 in Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast with 298 people on board, Kremlin-backed enthusiastically claimed credit, saying they thought they had shot down another Ukrainian military transport plane. “We did warn you - do not fly in our sky,” Kremlin-backed separatist leader Igor Girkin, a Russian intelligence service officer, wrote on his official Vkontakte soon after the tragedy. Though when the gravity of the mistake became obvious, the Russian-backed insurgents backpedaled and claimed innocence. The statements of Girkin posted on his Vkontakte page on July 18 appeared to be a lot more confusing. According to Girkin,

A KREMLIN spy known as “The Demon” is believed to be one of the pro-Russian militants responsible for bringing down Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17. Ukrainian authorities identified Igor Bezler in a tapped phone conversation telling his Russian boss “we have just shot down a plane”. In the phone conversation, Bezler told military intelligence co-ordinator Colonel Vasyl Mykolaiovych Geranin that his men had gone to search the smoking wreckage for the pilots. But 40 minutes later, in another intercepted call between two men known as “The Major” and “The Greek”, the pro-Russian militants realised they had shot down a civilian airliner. “In short, it was

Fidel Castro accused Ukraine on Friday of shooting down the Malaysia Airlines plane that crashed in rebel-held territory, blaming its "pro-imperialist" government for the disaster that killed 298 people. "Cuba... must express its repudiation of this action by such an anti-Russian, anti-Ukrainian and pro-imperialist government," the 87-year-old father of the Cuban Revolution wrote in the official newspaper Granma. Flight MH17 crashed Thursday in eastern Ukraine, where the pro-Western government is battling pro-Russian separatists, sparking a flurry of accusations over who was responsible for apparently shooting it down. Castro said the plane had been hit while flying "on a route under the control of

"I would have another suggestion that there is a system called DIRCM, which could potentially defeat heat-seeking missiles looking to shoot down a civilian airliner," Kirk said after calling for "one hell of a wrongful death suit" to be filed against Russia. Russia brushed off international criticism on Friday to throw blame for the MH17 plane crash back on Ukraine and the West. Worldwide opprobrium was poured on to the Kremlin for supporting separatist rebels, who stand accused of sending down the Malyasia Airlines jet. But Moscow denied any ties to the attack, claiming it was the victim of a political vendetta. Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, accused Washington of a “criminal decision” to back Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s president, in waging war against pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine. “Frankly speaking, I believe that this disaster will sober up those who have very clearly

President Obama was in Delaware on Thursday when a Malaysian airliner went down near Ukraine´s border with Russia. The president was scheduled to give a speech on transportation issues, but began his remarks talking about what, at that time, was thought to be a shoot down of a passenger jet. Daily Mail: President Barack Obama provoked fury in the U.S. on Thursday by casually devoting less than a minute to the deaths of 295 people aboard a Malaysian airliner, as he began an often jokey 16-minute speech about the need to expand America’s transportation infrastructure. In March I received a call from the White House counsel’s office regarding a speech I had prepared for my boss at the State Department. The speech was about the impact that the disclosure of National Security Agency surveillance practices would have on U.S. Internet freedom policies. The draft stated that “if U.S. citizens disagree with congressional and executive branch determinations about the proper scope of signals intelligence activities, they have the opportunity to change the policy through our democratic process.” But the White House counsel’s office told me that no, that wasn’t true. The Obama administration accused Israel on Thursday of failing to do all it can to prevent civilian casualties in Gaza during cross-border attacks. Noting the deaths a day earlier of four boys who were killed on a Gaza beach by an Israeli strike, the State Department said the high civilian death toll in Gaza has been "heartbreaking." Three more children were killed in Gaza on Thursday. Still, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki also criticized Hamas militants in Gaza who continue to fire rockets and mortars into Israel, prolonging the latest round of violence in the Mideast that has so far killed 235

We know two things for sure about President Obama´s foreign policy. First, the world is a mess. It reminds you of that school teacher who lost control of her class. I remember a case like that in 7th grade and it was not a suitable place for learning. From the Gaza to Iraq, we´ve got problems that no one would have imagined a couple of years ago. The latest international mess is a commercial aircraft shot down and 300 people killed. There were 23 US nationals on that flight and President Obama needs to address the nation from The Oval Office like

It was strange. Joe Scarborough had just completed a comprehensive indictment of failed American foreign policy around the globe. But at the very moment when he should have laid those disasters at the feet of the sitting President of the United States, Scarborough came down with a bad case of . . . cold feet. One strikeout after another." But perhaps fearful of where the ineluctable logic of his comments was taking
