The MH17 conspiracy theories doing

As the world continued to search for answers over the downing of Flight MH17, the internet came alive with conspiracy theories today. The Web has long been a haven for numerologists and conspiracy crackpots peddling their alternative analyses of events that shake the world. And today was no different as web sleuths across the globe rushed online in a bid to hypothesize over what really happened to the doomed Malaysian Airlines passenger plane . . . Was whoever shot down MH17 actually trying to assassinate Vladimir Putin? Russia Today sparked a fever of speculation last night after publishing a report that claimed the doomed

In March I received a call from the White House counsel’s office regarding a speech I had prepared for my boss at the State Department. The speech was about the impact that the disclosure of National Security Agency surveillance practices would have on U.S. Internet freedom policies. The draft stated that “if U.S. citizens disagree with congressional and executive branch determinations about the proper scope of signals intelligence activities, they have the opportunity to change the policy through our democratic process.” But the White House counsel’s office told me that no, that wasn’t true. I was instructed to amend the

Gaza crisis: Obama administration

The Obama administration accused Israel on Thursday of failing to do all it can to prevent civilian casualties in Gaza during cross-border attacks. Noting the deaths a day earlier of four boys who were killed on a Gaza beach by an Israeli strike, the State Department said the high civilian death toll in Gaza has been "heartbreaking." Three more children were killed in Gaza on Thursday. Still, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki also criticized Hamas militants in Gaza who continue to fire rockets and mortars into Israel, prolonging the latest round of violence in the Mideast that has so far killed 235

We know two things for sure about President Obama´s foreign policy. First, the world is a mess. It reminds you of that school teacher who lost control of her class. I remember a case like that in 7th grade and it was not a suitable place for learning. From the Gaza to Iraq, we´ve got problems that no one would have imagined a couple of years ago. The latest international mess is a commercial aircraft shot down and 300 people killed. There were 23 US nationals on that flight and President Obama needs to address the nation from The Oval Office like

Former FBI informant in the Weather Underground, Larry Grathwohl, is one of the stars of Joel Gilbert’s new film, “There’s No Place Like Utopia,” which is premiering in Denver on Friday and then goes nationwide. Friday, July 18, also happens to be “Blog About Larry Day,” to remember his service to the nation and his untimely death last year. His friend Tina Trent says, “we are asking that bloggers, radio folks, podcasters, and others in the media use July 18th to tell the truth about violent leftist radicals like Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn and their ilk.” She adds, “Their war

First came the loud explosion that made buildings rattle: then it started raining bodies. One of the corpses fell through the rickety roof of Irina Tipunova´s house in this sleepy village, just after Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 exploded high over eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists are fighting government forces. "There was a howling noise and everything started to rattle. Then objects started falling out of the sky," the 65-year-old pensioner said in front of her grey-brick home. "And then I heard a roar and she landed in the kitchen, the roof was broken," she said, showing the gaping hole made by the body

It was strange. Joe Scarborough had just completed a comprehensive indictment of failed American foreign policy around the globe. But at the very moment when he should have laid those disasters at the feet of the sitting President of the United States, Scarborough came down with a bad case of . . . cold feet. Scarborough laid out to David Gregory a tour d´horizon of failed American foreign policy from the Middle East, to Iran, to Russia/Ukraine, describing it as "one disaster after another. One strikeout after another." But perhaps fearful of where the ineluctable logic of his comments was taking

Even in the bitterly fought primary battle between Mississippi senator Thad Cochran and his challenger, state senator Chris McDaniel, some of the radio ads that aired against McDaniel were considered especially incendiary. One charged that a McDaniel victory would set back “race relationships between blacks and whites and other ethnic groups.” (SNIP) “Some money from the Republicans,” some from African Americans. “I raised money from a number of sources,” he said. As it turns out, Crudup raised all of the $144,685 his PAC took in from exactly one source: Haley Barbour’s political machine.

London-based Russia Today reporter Sara Firth announced her resignation this morning in protest of the politicized coverage of yesterday’s shoot-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. Firth said the manner in which Russia Today announced the tragedy was the “straw that broke the camel’s back for me.” Press Gazette has more: Russia Today has been criticised for suggesting the crash is the fault of Ukraine. Most other media outlets have suggested that a more likely explanation is that pro-Russian separatists were responsible for shooting down the passenger jet. So far it is estimated that around 300 people died in the crash.

A Chinese businessman paid $500,000 to have dinner with Bill and Hillary Clinton. But when he asked if his kids could join, the former first couple demanded another half-million, the New York Post reports. One witness said Holzman regaled guests with a tale that “lunch for two with Bill and Hillary went for $500,000 to benefit the Clinton Foundation.” And the winning bid came from “a Chinese business mogul who then asked if he could bring his two children along to the meeting.” But, our spy said, the high bidder was then told by the Clinton camp he could only bring his

Politicians here have not even figured out how yet to implement their new law requiring us to pay for everybody else’s health care, and already people are clamoring to legalize drugs that are, at the very least, hazardous to their health. The good people of Colorado and Washington state can now buy and smoke pot without violating state laws. The movement to do so is spreading among other states like a hot tropical virus through a detention facility on the Mexican border. I, for one, have never really cared one way or the other if people choose to smoke pot. My experience

On Why Conservative Women Are Sexier

Right wing women are sexier than left wing women, argues Cosmo Landesman in the latest issue of the Spectator. And it´s not like he´s biased: this is a self-confessed "liberal-lefty-pro-feminist" talking here. Maybe once conservative women deserved their reputation for being "uptight, prudish and repressed", he says, but not any more. These days it´s lefty women who are the problem, constricted as they are by "a sexual correctness that has come in the wake of third-wave feminism." Landesman has been doing some serious, dedicated research into this: I recently had sex with a woman who writes for the Guardian and in the heat

An expert believes that MH17 was downed by a missile fired from rebel-held Torez in eastern Ukraine - and a BUK anti-aircraft launcher has been pictured rumbling into the town just two hours before the crash, leading to speculation that it was this piece of equipment that was used to bring about the tragedy. On Friday a missile launcher with two rockets missing was then filmed by Ukrainian intelligence services being smuggled on the back of a truck to Russia. Anton Gerashchenko, from Ukraine´s interior ministry, said of the missing missiles that ´it´s not hard to guess why´. ´It was

ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH, Fla. — The Obama administration is reopening the Eastern Seaboard to offshore oil and gas exploration, announcing final approval Friday of sonic cannons that can pinpoint energy deposits deep beneath the ocean floor. The decision promises to create plenty of jobs and thrills the oil industry, but dismays environmentalists worried about the immediate impact as well as the long-term implications of oil development. The cannons fill waters shared by whales and turtles with sound waves 100 times louder than a jet engine. Saving endangered species was the environmental groups´ best hope of extending a ban against offshore drilling off

Barack Obama announced Friday that the rebels believed to be behind the rocket attack on a Malaysian Airlines jetliner in eastern Ukraine have had ´a steady stream of support from Russia,´ but stopped short of calling for an immediate pushback against Moscow. The U.S. president´s brief but substantial comments about deaths that he called ´an outrage of unspeakable proportions´ came 24 hours after he coolly inserted a 40-second statement about the plane crash into a 16-minute oration about domestic transportation policy, drawing gasps and guffaws from Americans. ´This certainly will be a wake-up call for Europe and the world that there are

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is still something of a punchline after his disastrous 2012 presidential campaign. As he prepares to run again in 2016, there´s nowhere to go but up. Which is precisely where he appears to be going. In the national spotlight again because of the crisis on the southern border, Perry seems to be working his way into GOP voters´ favor again. Witness two new polls this week. The first poll, from NBC News and Marist College, showed Perry right up there with the frontrunners in Iowa, pulling 7 percent of the vote. As the United States gathered information Thursday about the Malaysian airliner shot down over Ukraine, President Barack Obama was in New York on a quick fundraising swing with Democratic donors. But now one of the super PACs that hosted Obama for an event — the House Majority PAC — claims that Obama’s meeting with donors was not technically a fundraiser. Earlier this year, the University of Wisconsin–Madison faculty senate adopted a new Framework for Diversity and Inclusive Excellence, which, according to the campus’s Board of Regents, “places the mission of diversity at the center of institutional life so that it becomes a core organizing principle.” Nothing new under the sun there. But UW economics professor W. Lee Hansen notes something profoundly disturbing in the framework, which apparently went unnoticed by the faculty and the administration: To achieve the plan’s vague aims, the Ad Hoc Diversity Planning Committee formulated five goals and thirty detailed recommendations. Unbeknownst to faculty senators, these goals and recommendations

Spokane, WA - A large, wind-whipped wildfire in rural north-central Washington destroyed an estimated 100 homes, forced the evacuation of a small town and cut power to most of the scenic Methow Valley. A spokesman for the Carlton Complex Fire, Jacob McCann, said Friday that the fire "ran quite a bit" on Thursday and officials were also able to get a better handle on its size. It blackened 260 square miles by Friday morning, up dramatically from the last estimate of 28 square miles. "This is a very dynamic situation," said another fire spokesman, Dan Omdal. "Fire activity is really high. Things are changing very quickly."

Each new crisis around the world, including the scab scraping problems in Ukraine following this week’s plane downing, seem to demonstrate that foreign policy will be a much bigger factor in the next presidential election than I’d once imagined. Americans will still focus on a host of domestic issues, but it’s impossible to ignore the deteriorating state of affairs around the globe and America’s place on that larger stage. This made it all the more curious to examine Hillary Clinton’s statements about American foreign policy given on, of all places, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Setting jokes aside for

Geography, motive, communications intercepts, and all manner of circumstantial evidence suggest that the likeliest suspect in the horrific deaths of two hundred and ninety-eight people aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was the curiously well-armed and well-coördinated military outfit loyal to Moscow in eastern Ukraine. Various government and intelligence officials in Kiev say that they have evidence, including a series of damning tapped conversations among pro-Russian forces, that the separatists shot down the plane, which crashed near Grabovo, a coal-mining town in the Donetsk region. Ukraine’s President, Petro Poroshenko, said, “We are calling this not an incident, not a catastrophe, but a

PRINCETON, NJ -- Four potential GOP candidates for president in 2016 stand above seven others as the best known and best liked among Republicans at this early juncture in the nominating process. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, and Texas Gov. Huckabee has slightly higher familiarity and net favorability than the other 10 potential Republican candidates tested. These findings are based on Gallup interviewing conducted
