Arizona Sen. John McCain, once one of the most ardent defenders of American involvement in Iraq, said Thursday that had he been President in 2003 the U.S. might never have invaded. “You’ll find this surprising,” McCain said at an event hosted by CNN and National Journal Thursday in Washington, “but I think I would have been more reluctant to commit American troops.” The 2008 Republican presidential nominee and one of the chief proponents of the Iraq surge argued that his background in the military and his experience in Washington would have led him to see through “flimsy” evidence, had he defeated former President George

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has finally broken his silence, using his first statement since being released from the Taliban to thank President Barack Obama for his support. "Sergeant Bergdahl is deeply grateful to President Obama for saving his life," said Bergdahl´s new attorney Eugene Fidell. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Fidell said the former prisoner of war had authorized him to make that statement on his behalf. Fidell met with Bergdahl at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in Texas, where Bergdahl returned to active duty earlier in the week. Bergdahl was given a desk job after six weeks of transitional

Have you heard the saying “working twice as hard to be half as good?” This is precisely the dilemma Israel finds itself in all too often. Currently Israel is again embroiled in an unwanted battle of self-defense against Hamas, an enemy obsessed with its destruction. It seems a distant memory that in an effort to appease the demands being made upon it by world leaders, Israel made a gut-wrenching decision in 2005 to unilaterally withdraw from the Gaza Strip, after a 38-year presence. Communities were left intact, which included useful structures such as greenhouses. Yet as if to drill their hatred into the

The Republican National Committee has chosen to host its 2016 GOP convention in the all-important battleground state of Ohio. The GOP has been waging an all-out battle with itself since the 2012 presidential election that saw Mitt Romney’s campaign go down in flames. Since then, the party has rolled out “autopsy” strategies and seen the rise and fall of some of its most promising 2016 candidates, most notably, scandal-plagued New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. By choosing the city of Cleveland to host its nomination event the party sends the message that Ohio will be its last stand. What’s further interesting is

Truth Telling and

I suspect that there’s a certain amount of thought that can rattle around in a human head without the assistance of language -- a certain amount of spatial reasoning, perhaps, a baby’s silent attempt to stack his blocks -- something is going on in there. But mostly we think with language -- and here I define think as the function of reason, the analysis and assessment of available facts, the kind of clear mental function that should take place before a person votes. If you were a member of an elitist group trying to get complete control of a logical and stiff-necked people, what would you have to accomplish first?

The U.S. Constitution:

Teaching in high schools in New York City for twenty-one years, it was disturbing to see that U.S. history textbooks often distance themselves from open praise and delight at the system of government our country enjoys. No sense of resounding gratitude is expressed for our Constitution. Federalism and checks and balances are dryly presented in a detached manner as mere mechanisms. There is no sense of honor accorded to the incredible vision of a government “conceived in liberty,” with the centers of power placed under wonderful constraints against tyranny. Further, students will typically find politically correct statements in

A tug of war is under way for possession of doomed flight MH17´s "black box" recorder amid reports the device, which could provide the key to the crash investigation, has already been sent to Moscow. Aviation experts said the black box, comprising cockpit voice and data recordings, would establish for certain whether the plane was shot down and where the deadly missile may have been fired from. The data and voice recorders on Boeing 777s like the Malaysia Airlines one that crashed are among the most sophisticated in civilian use. But as politicians including US President Barack Obama called for international investigators to be

We do not intend to renew its activities,” Putin declared in a statement published on a Kremlin Web page. The Moscow newspaper Kommersant on Tuesday quoted unidentified sources as saying that Russia had agreed to reopen the Lourdes base near Havana, unleashing concerns about U.S. relations with both Havana and Moscow.

Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee says this incident makes clear that all air space isn’t safe, and we might want to think carefully about where we fly. “Airlines that are under our flag, we must assess how they travel internationally,” Jackson Lee said. “We owe that to the American people.” But Jackson Lee says American planes will inevitably fly over some conflicted countries. “As you well know, Israel is in conflict and we have a strong tie with Israel, and our flights

On the same day the state approved mandatory outdoor watering restrictions with the threat of $500 fines, the Southern California couple received a letter from their city threatening a $500 penalty for not watering their brown lawn. It´s brown because of their conservation, which, besides a twice-a-week lawn watering regimen, includes shorter showers and larger loads of laundry. They´re encouraged by the state´s new drought-busting, public service slogan: Brown is the new green. The city of Glendora

Israel accepts an Egyptian-proposed Gaza cease-fire; Hamas keeps firing. Hamas deliberately aims rockets at civilians; Israel painstakingly tries to avoid them, actually telephoning civilians in the area and dropping warning charges, so-called roof knocking. “Here’s the difference between us,” explains the Israeli prime minister. “We’re using missile defense to protect our civilians, and they’re using their civilians to protect their missiles.” Rarely does international politics present a moment of such moral clarity. Yet we routinely hear this Israel-Gaza fighting described as a morally equivalent “cycle of violence.” This is absurd. What possible interest can Israel have in cross-border fighting? Everyone

U.S. intelligence officials confirmed, but could not identify the origins of, the missile strike that led to the deadliest downing of a civilian passenger plane in recent decades. One Ukrainian government official, however, said the Boeing 777 traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur appeared to have been hit by an advanced Russian-made missile system that recently came into the hands of the

The Government needs to make it “easier and cheaper” for councils to bring in lower speed limits to reduce the number of cyclists killed Britain’s road, an influential group of MPs has said. The call for more 20mph speed limits by the Transport Select Committee was accompanied by a demand for a five-fold increase in cycling infrastructure spending to cut casualties. The policy recommendations come in a major new report into cycling safety released today. It argues for a “cultural change” to ease the tensions between motorists and cyclists and calls for the appointment of a “cycling tsar” to coordinate policy

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blamed the Obama administration for the influx of immigrant children at the southern border, but didn´t rule out the prospect of accepting children in New Jersey on a case-by-case basis. "I have great empathy for that situation, but frankly the administration has done an awful job in securing our border, and they need to do that," Christie told reporters in Marion, Iowa, where he campaigned for incumbent Gov. Terry Branstad. "I don´t think ... it matters one bit what your Hispanic population is, as to whether or not you´re going to offer help and assistance," he continued.

Hillary Clinton says there’s “growing awareness” that Malaysia Airlines passenger plane was probably shot down by Russian insurgents — but argued that European leaders must “take the lead” on any action if that proves to be the case. Clinton made the comments about the doomed plane in a wide-ranging interview with TV host Charlie Rose set to air Thursday night. Portions of the taped interview were released ahead of airtime. “The questions I’d be asking is, No. 1, ‘Who could have shot it down? Who had the equipment?’” she said. “It’s obviously an antiaircraft missile.” The former secretary of state, who’s pondering a

With just a little encouragement from the US, regime change was possible. That would have been great for the Iranian people and made the world a safer place.
