The possible shootdown of a Malaysian Airlines 777 over Ukraine with the loss all aboard may represent a new and disturbing trend in that conflict. For Ukraine represents the flashpoint between east and west at its most immediate. (Snip) If Leading from Behind is working it’s not obvious. The president has spent the last few weeks laughing at everything. But now he is faced with something possibly new and disturbing; something which a speech or an executive order won’t handle. He must tread very carefully. Above all he must remember that foreign policy is not something he conducts out of

The commercial break couldn’t come soon enough. MSNBC’s coverage of downed Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 took an awkward turn when a Howard Stern fan pranked “The Cycle” anchor Krystal Ball with a bogus eyewitness account. “Well I was looking out the window and I saw a projectile flying through the sky and it would appear that the plane was shot down by a blast of wind from Howard Stern’s ass,” the man told Ball, who thought she was speaking with Sgt. Michael Boyd of the US Embassy in Ukraine. Unfortunately, the interview didn’t end there. Ball continued the exchange, asking, “Can you tell us anything more from your military

WASHINGTON – George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley and former Acting U.S. Solicitor General Walter Dellinger engaged in an intense but friendly back-and-forth on Capitol Hill Wednesday. Sitting as witnesses before the House Rules Committee, they debated a host of arcane constitutional issues, lodging points and counterpoints to one another’s arguments about whether the House of Representatives can sue the president of the United States. The Turley/Dellinger tête-à-tête featured court case citations, historical precedent and the intentions of the Founders. Reduced to bystanders, lawmakers listened in rapt attention from the dais, mulling the polite dialogue between two of the nation’s most-nimble

´It looks like it may be a terrible tragedy’:

Barack Obama provoked fury in the U.S. by casually devoting mere moments to the deaths of 295 people aboard a Malaysian airliner on Thursday in Wilmington, Delaware, and then launching into jokes and his prepared remarks on the need to expand America´s transportation infrastructure. Twenty-three Americans are feared dead after the jetliner crashed in eastern Ukraine. Obama declared that ´it looks like it may be a terrible tragedy, but not before enthusiastically declaring that ´it is wonderful to be back in Delaware.´ ´Before I begin, obviously the world is watching reports of a downed passenger jet near the Russia-Ukraine border. And it looks

On September 1, 1983, Soviet fighter aircraft shot down Korean Air Lines flight 007 which had inadvertently entered Soviet airspace on its way from Anchorage to Seoul. All 269 people on board were killed. President Reagan swiftly condemned “this crime against humanity,” which only redoubled his desire to bring down the “evil empire” (as he had called the Soviet Union earlier that year). We can only hope for similar moral clarity today from the U.S. and Europe in the aftermath of the equally outrageous shooting down of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 over Ukraine with 295 people on board including more

The plane went down around 11:30 ET, possibly with Americans on board and most assuredly with dire consequences for eastern European geopolitics. But since we’re in the post-optics “YOLO” phase of lame-duckery, that’s really no reason to cancel a fun day out. At approximately 12:50 pm, the motorcade stopped at the Charcoal Pit, a popular, established restaurant just north of Wilmington, Del. Known for its burgers and sundaes. Obama shook hands and mingled with many of the diners, stopping at one point to pick up seven-month old Jaidyn Oates, and pose for a photo. He invoked Vice Presiident Biden’s name

Girkin is the defense minister of the separatist republic that it is battling to enforce Russia´s hold on the Ukraine. He is one of the most well-known faces of the pro-Russia insurgency in the Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities identify him as a veteran of the Russian military intelligence

In its efforts to cover the Malaysia Airlines crash today, MSNBC stumbled. In this case, the enormity of the stumble can’t possibly be described, abridged, short-handed or whatever. Just read the transcript of the video above. The awfulness occurs as MSNBC host Krystal Ball takes a phone call from an alleged “eyewitness” to the crash: Ball: Let’s turn now to an MSNBC exclusive. U.S. Staff Sgt. Michael Boyd is at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine and says that he saw a missile in the air hit the plane. He is on the phone with us. Sergeant, are you there? More than 20 Stockton police officers discharged their weapons during the chaotic chase, which began after 2 p.m. Wednesday outside a Bank of the West in a strip mall. Baghdad - A powerful Iranian general has emerged as the chief tactician in Iraq’s fight against Sunni militants, working on the front lines alongside 120 advisers from his country’s Revolutionary Guard to direct Shiite militiamen and government forces in the smallest details of battle, militia commanders and government officials say. The startlingly hands-on role of Iranian Gen. Ghasem Soleimani points to the extent of the Shiite-led Iraqi government’s reliance on its ally Tehran. It also strikes a strong contrast with the more methodical, cautious approach of the United States, Iran’s rival for influence in Iraq. Shiite fighters have come to

The Netflix documentary Mitt ought to be required viewing for American voters, and particularly the low-information types who cast their ballots for Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election. Mitt chronicles the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, and in it one can see the effects a long and grueling presidential campaign can have on a candidate and his family. One can also see the chasm between who a man really is and what he’s portrayed to be by his political opponents and the media. The Romney in Mitt is a man America would happily choose as its president:

Looking for a place where Obamacare doesn´t exist? Try moving to the U.S. Territories, where the Obama administration just provided a pretty big waiver from the law´s major coverage provisions. The Affordable Care Act´s design dealt a pretty big problem to the territories. It required insurers there to comply with the law´s major market reforms — guaranteed coverage, mandated benefits, limits on profits, etc. — without requiring residents to get coverage or providing subsidies to help afford coverage. The territories — Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands — have been

Sen. John McCain said Thursday afternoon that he wasn’t ready to conclude that the Malaysia Airlines crash came as a result of an attack — but he did make clear that trouble was on the way for Russian separatists if suggestions of a purposeful shoot-down proved true. “To leap to conclusions could be very embarrassing and really inappropriate until we have more information,” Mr. McCain said during an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, just a little while after hearing reports that the plane carrying 295 passengers could have been shot from the sky over eastern Ukraine by Russian separatists. "The court is aware that the majority of voters oppose same-sex marriage, but it is our country´s proud history to protect the rights of the individual, the rights of the unpopular and rights of the powerless, even at the cost of offending the majority," Monroe County Circuit Judge Luis Garcia wrote in his opinion.
