Iranian commanders on front

Baghdad - A powerful Iranian general has emerged as the chief tactician in Iraq’s fight against Sunni militants, working on the front lines alongside 120 advisers from his country’s Revolutionary Guard to direct Shiite militiamen and government forces in the smallest details of battle, militia commanders and government officials say. The startlingly hands-on role of Iranian Gen. Ghasem Soleimani points to the extent of the Shiite-led Iraqi government’s reliance on its ally Tehran. It also strikes a strong contrast with the more methodical, cautious approach of the United States, Iran’s rival for influence in Iraq. Shiite fighters have come to

The Netflix documentary Mitt ought to be required viewing for American voters, and particularly the low-information types who cast their ballots for Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election. Mitt chronicles the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, and in it one can see the effects a long and grueling presidential campaign can have on a candidate and his family. One can also see the chasm between who a man really is and what he’s portrayed to be by his political opponents and the media. The Romney in Mitt is a man America would happily choose as its president:

Looking for a place where Obamacare doesn´t exist? Try moving to the U.S. Territories, where the Obama administration just provided a pretty big waiver from the law´s major coverage provisions. The Affordable Care Act´s design dealt a pretty big problem to the territories. It required insurers there to comply with the law´s major market reforms — guaranteed coverage, mandated benefits, limits on profits, etc. — without requiring residents to get coverage or providing subsidies to help afford coverage. The territories — Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands — have been

Yesterday, I ran a short post that quoted a June 4th Washington Post story on the role of Karl Rove’s American Crossroads in the Mississippi Senate runoff. The Post reported: American Crossroads, a GOP establishment organization, has decided to shift its political focus almost entirely to the general election and will not be spending money in the likely runoff election to decide the Mississippi Senate nomination that was virtually deadlocked after Tuesday night. […] “Other than Alaska, we have completed our work on Senate primaries this cycle and are now focused on general elections. With the Chamber, the NRSC, and

Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was allegedly shot down by a group of Russian-backed Cossack militants near the village of Chornukhine, Luhansk Oblast, some 80 kilometers north-west of Donetsk, according to recordings of intercepted phone calls between Russian military intelligence officers and members of terrorist groups, released by the country’s security agency (SBU). One phone call apparently was made at 4:40 p.m. Kyiv time, or 20 minutes after the plane crash, by Igor Bezler, who the SBU says is a Russian military intelligence officer and leading commander of the self-proclaimed

Sen. John McCain said Thursday afternoon that he wasn’t ready to conclude that the Malaysia Airlines crash came as a result of an attack — but he did make clear that trouble was on the way for Russian separatists if suggestions of a purposeful shoot-down proved true. “To leap to conclusions could be very embarrassing and really inappropriate until we have more information,” Mr. McCain said during an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, just a little while after hearing reports that the plane carrying 295 passengers could have been shot from the sky over eastern Ukraine by Russian separatists. Obama will arrive in the city about 4 p.m. He’ll first attend a private event, then later in the evening attend a house majority PAC round table before departing about 9:15 p.m. The stop follows a visit to an interstate bridge in Delaware that’s been closed because of tilting supports as Obama presses for more spending on roads and other public infrastructure programs. The House passed a measure this week to keep transportation aid flowing to states through May. Obama

Carson said that the U.S. is the most benign superpower that the world has ever known. If we are replaced as a superpower, the likelihood of another nation being as benign is unlikely. “We have got to stand up for America,” he said.

When one examines the much referred to “rules for radicals," it is revealed that these “rules” are nothing more than a rude departure from intellectual debate. These rules do not speak of making cogent points or salient arguments. They do not encourage fact gathering and how to apply logic with the delivery of those facts. They do not discuss intelligent engagement. What these “rules” do is promote the departure from civil discourse. We have witnessed the “make it personal” and the shouting down of opposing view points in public forums. In a nutshell, the “rules” for radicals is “do what

The Republicans in Congress are asking questions. I think with a different administration, one that was a Republican administration, this story would be a national obsession. And instead, it’s getting coverage here and a few other places. But it deserves a lot more questions. It certainly does, and

The source added that armed militia fighting Kiev-led forces in eastern Ukraine does not have Buk systems, which are capable of shooting down aircraft flying at altitudes up to 25 kilometers (82,000 feet).
