We´re leaving Afghan

I never thought my Afghan translator would save my life by killing two Taliban fighters who were about to kill me. Janis did just that. I´m here today because he had my back in a way I only thought an American soldier would. On April 28, 2008, I found myself in the worst ambush of my life -- surrounded by 45 Taliban fighters, out of grenades, and running low on bullets. We had been fighting nonstop for an hour. A mortar round landed within a few meters of my position and sent me flying into a ditch. Coming into to consciousness

A kidnapping and ransom case in the Carolinas suggests just how active Mexican drug cartels have become in the U.S. Today, authorities identified three purported members of a Mexican drug cartel as the alleged kidnappers of a South Carolina man last week, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District of Court of South Carolina. The American hostage, who authorities said was drug courier for the cartel, apparently was kidnapped on July 9 and held for ransom, with demands for as much as $400,000 coming from unknown cartel members in Mexico. After nearly a week in captivity, the hostage was found chained

The left has ardently objected to the Hobby Lobby decision, allegedly due to concern about women’s access to healthcare. However, their recent actions have forced people to wonder: are some of the critics more concerned with providing women with free contraceptives or with demonizing religious adherents and promoting a political narrative about a “war on women”? The evidence increasingly suggests the latter. Instead of seeking compromises that would further their objectives, some liberals have proposed extreme anti-liberty legislation that has no chance of becoming law and have manufactured controversies to allow them to continue demonizing their adversaries. In response to the

Even as president-elect Obama in 2008 was forming what seemed to be a centrist cabinet, the far left cleaved to the theory that Obama was a stealth leftist radical whose real agenda was their dream agenda: redress the income inequalities of the capitalist system, empower women and minorities, cripple the fossil fuel industry, and open borders and subordination of American sovereignty to the UN. Leftists like former Weatherman Mark Rudd, pal of Tom Hayden (Hanoi Jane’s mentor) and Bill Ayers former Weather Underground bomber and sometime mentor of Obama, cleaved to the theory that Obama would “feint right move left.” The

Twenty years ago, 300 House Republican candidates stunned Democrats with its Contract With America. This brief, clear document committed those who signed on to do several specific things if voters gave Republicans control of the House of Representatives, a body that Democrats had controlled for the prior four decades. Eight of the promises in the Contract With America were internal changes in the operation of the House of Representatives, and the House fulfilled them. The other part of this document promised to bring to floor votes within 100 days ten substantive bills that the Democrat leadership of the House had kept

The Roma had arrived on Sunday in Landen, some 50 km (30 miles) east of the Belgian capital of Brussels. They agreed with a landowner to park 14 caravans there until Tuesday, according to Gino Debroux, the Landen mayor. "Since then, they´ve said they won´t leave and they´re there with 30 caravans," Mr Debroux told Reuters by telephone. "This is an industrial site and is not designed for camping." He said the group´s refusal to leave had led him to hire a DJ to play music from Wednesday morning, starting around 9 a.m.

A Seattle man caused $60,000 in damage after using a homemade blowtorch to try to kill a spider in his rental home on Tuesday night. The 24-year-old, who lived in the house with his mother, had used a can of spray paint and a lighter to try to chase the spider from a laundry room, but the fire quickly took hold. The man, who has not been named, tried to douse the flames with water but it soon spread to the attic. No one was injured in the blaze, although the spider is believed to have perished. Wind turbines may catch on fire ten times more often than is publicly reported, putting nearby properties at risk and casting doubt on their green credentials, researchers have warned. [Snip] An average of 11.7 such fires are reported globally each year, by media, campaign groups and other publicly-available sources, but this is likely to represent just the “tip of the iceberg”. There could in fact be 117 turbine fires each year, it argues, based on analysis showing just 10pc of all wind farm accidents are typically reported. Fires tend to be “catastrophic”, leading to turbines worth more than £2 million

More than $42m has been raised so far this year by Democratic campaigns in just 10 states that are seen as crucial in determining whether the party holds on to control of the Senate in November´s midterm elections. And although a number of more liberal senators are currently pushing for a constitutional amendment that would somewhat curb the growing dominance of money over US politics, disclosures

Obama touched on the laundry list of global flashpoints situations during a statement from the White House on Wednesday — the disputed elections in Afghanistan, the negotiations on Iran´s nuclear program, the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, and, finally, the conflict in Ukraine. A SET of mysterious, 5,000-year-old rock carvings could see the light of day again, after being buried 50 years ago to protect them from vandals. The Cochno Stone in West Dunbartonshire bears what is considered to be the finest example of Bronze Age “cup and ring” carvings in Europe. The stone, which measures 42ft by 26ft, was discovered by the Rev James Harvey in 1887 on farmland near what is now the Faifley housing estate on the edge of Clydebank. It is covered in about 90 carved indentations, or “cups”, and grooved spirals, along with a ringed cross and
