JACKSON, Miss. —Representatives for Chris McDaniel´s U.S. Senate campaign said Wednesday that they continue to examine election materials, but have not yet filed an official election challenge. McDaniel lost to six-term U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran by more than 7,600 votes in the June 24 Republican runoff election. McDaniel attorney Mitch Tyner said enough evidence has already been found to challenge the election. He said an official challenge will be filed within the next 10 days. McDaniel did not attend Wednesday´s news conference in Jackson. "This is not a challenge right now. This is a process by which is afforded to the candidate by

California Death Penalty

A federal judge in Southern California ruled Wednesday that California’s death penalty was unconstitutional. The “dysfunctional administration of California’s death penalty system,” wrote Judge Cormac J. Carney of United States District Court, has led to “inordinate and unpredictable” delays in the execution of inmates. The delays, the judge wrote, means that sentences are carried out against only “a trivial few of those sentenced to death.” In essence, he wrote, sentences by juries have been transformed to “life in prison, with the remote possibility of death.” In making his ruling, Judge Carney vacated the death sentence of

A minor actress from Texas was sentenced Wednesday to 18 years in prison for sending ricin-tainted letters to President Obama, former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and the head of his gun-control group. Shannon Guess Richardson, 36, was also ordered to pay $367,000 restitution as part of a plea bargain for pleading guilty in December to one count of developing, producing, possessing and transferring a biological agent for use as a weapon. She bought the materials — castor bean seeds and lye — online. The FBI arrested her in June 2013 after she was indicted by a federal grand jury.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has secretly notified Congress that the military intends to transfer six low-level Guantánamo Bay detainees to Uruguay as early as next month, according to people with knowledge of the communication. All six have been approved for transfer for more than four years. Mr. Hagel’s formal determination that the transfer would be in the national security interest of the United States breaks a bureaucratic paralysis over a deal that has been waiting for his approval since March, but stalled amid the political uproar over a prisoner exchange deal that secured the release of Sgt. WESLACO - BCFS Health and Human Services on Wednesday withdrew a proposal to turn a Weslaco hotel into a facility for young illegal immigrants. A media release from the group of non-profit agencies cited "negative backlash caused by information misreported to the public" as the reason for walking away from the project. BCFS last week submitted a request for a conditional use permit to relocate its facility from Harlingen to Weslaco. The agency had agreed to use $3.8 million in non-government funds to buy the Palm Aire Hotel and Suites on FM 1015. BCFS sought to turn the hotel into

Israel agreed Wednesday to halt its airstrikes on Gaza for five hours in order to allow humanitarian aid, following a request from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. The military said in a statement Wednesday that it would hold its fire for five hours starting at 10:00 a.m. local time on Thursday. It warns however that it will retaliate "firmly and decisively" if Hamas or other militant groups launch attacks on Israel during that time. The cease-fire request came from U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Robert Serry, Haaretz reports. After news of the cease-fire broke, Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defense system continued to

Fed up with crime, some armed Detroiters have developed itchy trigger-fingers — and Police Chief James Craig said lawbreakers are getting the message. (Snip) Detroit has experienced 37 percent fewer robberies in 2014 than during the same period last year, 22 percent fewer break-ins of businesses and homes, and 30 percent fewer carjackings. Craig attributed the drop to better police work and criminals being reluctant to prey on citizens who may be carrying guns. “Criminals are getting the message that good Detroiters are armed and will use that weapon,” said Craig, who has repeatedly said he believes armed citizens deter

Who knew that a “Weird Al” Yankovic song could be educational? “Word Crimes,” the music satirist’s latest single from his new album “Mandatory Fun,” is a send-up of common grammatical and language errors, set to Robin Thicke’s 2013 hit song “Blurred Lines.” The music video even has dancing punctuation symbols, just like how Thicke dances with models in his clip for the song. While Yankovic’s first single “Tacky,” released Monday, features celebrity cameos, the video for “Word Crimes” is animated, and doesn’t even show Yankovic save for a split-second cartoon version of the star.

On the floor of the Gulf of Mexico sits a Nazi ship of ghosts, a sunken U-boat whose 52 crewmen died under almost a mile of water just south of the mouth of the Mississippi River. Depth charges dropped by a Coast Guard escort vessel blasted U-166 apart shortly after it had sunk the SS Robert E. Federal employees, like all Americans, are entitled to hold passionate political beliefs. Most executive branch federal employees, however, may not engage in certain political activities, thanks to an anti-conflict of interest principle enshrined in a federal law called the Hatch Act. To wit, President Bush requested the resignation of his GSA administrator in 2008 after the US Office of Special Counsel determined she had violated federal law by participating in a video conference with Karl Rove and sending out partisan letters. (The New York Times was scandalized at the time, though I strangely can´t find their editorial calling for Kathleen

If the Palestinians are merely engaged in a nationalist struggle for self-determination, then why are they inciting genocide of Jewry? In the midst of Operation Protective Edge, Hamas released a music video in Hebrew calling for the Palestinians to bomb Israel and kill all Israelis. “Raze it [Israel] to the ground, exterminate the cockroaches’ nest, and banish all the Zionists,” the lyrics read. Some human rights activists and lawyers may get a sense of déjà vu upon reading these words. Back in 1994, there were several radio broadcasts calling for the extermination of human cockroaches. They were in Rwanda. When the Hutus began their
