A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds widespread public disapproval of the way President Obama and Republicans in Congress are handling the influx of unaccompanied foreign children at the southern border as the two sides engage in a fierce debate over how to stem the crisis. Nearly 6 out of 10 Americans are not happy with Obama’s performance in dealing with the tens of thousands of minors who have arrived from Central America in recent months, overwhelming Border Patrol stations. All told, 58 percent disapprove of his management on the issue, including 54 percent of Latinos

The White House pushed back against a Republican subpoena for a top presidential adviser to testify this week, saying that summoning David Simas to Capitol Hill raised significant concerns about separation of powers. White House counsel W. Neil Eggleston wrote in a letter Monday to House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R., Calif.) that he would direct his staff to provide a briefing Tuesday on the White House Office of Political Strategy and Outreach. But Mr. Eggleston questioned the Republican lawmaker’s to decision to subpoena Mr. Simas, who serves as the director of that office. “While I am hopeful that we can

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Populist Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) got a rock-star reception during a standing-room-only campaign rally here Monday, as hundreds of liberal activists cheered her broadsides against corporate interests and voiced hopes that her presence might shift the political winds in an increasingly Republican state. The rally on behalf of Senate candidate Natalie Tennant was the latest in a string of recent Warren appearances in red and blue states alike, where Democratic base voters have embraced her fiery message as an envoy to working-class voters frustrated with both Wall Street and the Obama administration. “Our job is to fight for the

In 1345, the Mongol hordes besieging Kaffa were being decimated by the Black Death. Desperate, the leaders of the Mongol army figured it would take only a few plague-ridden corpses to infect and destroy all the inhabitants of the city. (snip)The fact is that communicable diseases know no boundaries. This is why Americans, particularly those who have decided not to vaccinate their children against the most common communicable diseases, should be very concerned about the almost entirely unregulated transportation of third world children (and adults) into the midst of crowded population centers. It is why all parents should be concerned about

A conservative group is welcoming New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to Iowa this week by accusing him of supporting “liberal” judges in the Garden State — as it looks to raise questions about whether conservatives can trust the Republican to ahead of a possible 2016 presidential run. The Judicial Crisis Network (JCN) said it was spending $75,000 on two online ads — one 15 seconds long and another 90 seconds — that say Mr. Christie has missed a number of chances to change the “liberal” makeup of the New Jersey Supreme Court and has worked with Democrats. “Over and over, Chris Christie said he would fix it, remake the court

Salem, Massachusetts, put an end to a long-time contract with the Christian-based Gordon College after administrators refused to cave to the gay-rights movement and remove a ban on “homosexual behavior” among students and staff. (Snip) The contract, in place since 2008, was actually due to wrap in August, but Salem officials decided to use the opt-out clause and exit the agreement early, The Blaze reported. “The city had the option of opting out early,” Mr. Sweeney told the Christian Post. “When the college became part of a public controversy over attention on longstanding behavioral standards we have as a private Christian institution,

A restless President Barack Obama has ventured out on an array of field trips, stopping at local hotspots when he travels and ambling around Washington, D.C. He’s dined on burgers, pizza, barbecue, ice cream and a Chipotle burrito bowl on recent outings. And last week, he shot pool and drank beer during a stop in Denver. White House officials say the forays into Americans’ everyday lives help re-energize the president and connect him with average folks. But with Mr. Obama’s legislative proposals stalled and his approval ratings sagging, the excursions also are aimed at reanimating the president’s agenda and providing

As the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalates, attention is focused on those individuals whose heroism is very much in the public eye: the parents of the three boys who were kidnapped and murdered, who lifted up the nation through their stoic courage and generosity of spirit; the air force pilots who are currently in the forefront and the intelligence agents who assist them in selecting targets; and the men and women who defied the skeptics to design the Iron Dome system that has been remarkably effective in protecting Israelis from rockets and missiles Palestinian terror groups are raining down

I took a look back at the current crisis of illegal Central American minors in the Weekly Standard article “Disorder at the border,” published in this past Friday in the new issue of the magazine. In retrospect, I think that the events of the preceding days fixed these issues in the public mind and culminated in President Obama’s notable address following his meeting in Dallas with Governor Perry. Obama had resisted the meeting with Perry, as he resisted visiting the border along the Rio Grande. In Dallas and Austin for big-buck fundraisers with his conspicuously wealthy friends, Obama was ultimately shamed

As Hamas rockets continued to fall on Israel even after Jerusalem accepted the Egyptian ceasefire proposal at 9 A.M., Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that if Hamas does not accept the ceasefire than Israel will “have all international legitimacy to broaden the military operation to achieve the required quiet.” Netanyahu, speaking at the beginning of a meeting in Tel Aviv with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said that Israel “agreed to the Egyptian proposal in order to give an opportunity for the demilitarization of the Strip--from missiles, from rockets and from tunnels--through diplomatic means." The Libyan government has said it was considering calling for international forces to help re-establish security, after a flare-up of violence in the capital Tripoli. "The government is looking into the possibility of making an appeal for international forces on the ground to re-establish security and help the government impose its authority," a government spokesman said in a statement. It also said the forces would help protect civilians and prevent anarchy. The statement comes after deadly clashes Sunday with armed groups led to the closing of the main international airport in Tripoli, which has come under rocket fire.

Krugman´s Blind Eye

Health Reform: Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman says critics of ObamaCare should cease and desist, because the law is "working." Given his track record on health care analysis, we´ll politely ignore this advice. In 2011, the same Krugman declared the Veterans Health Administration was "a huge policy success story, which offers important lessons for future health reform" because, among other things, "it´s free from the perverse incentives created when doctors and hospitals profit from expensive tests and procedures." It turns out the VHA is more akin to a cesspool of bloated bureaucracy, mismanagement, deadly delays and cover-ups. A couple years earlier, Krugman was

Hopes for an end to the bloody week-long conflict in Gaza hung in the balance on Tuesday when Israel accepted an Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire only for Hamas, the Palestinian territory’s de facto rulers, to reject it. The early morning decision by Israel’s security cabinet came before a 9am deadline for the de-escalation of hostilities kicked in. The Egyptian ceasefire plan was to give both sides an initial 12 hours to stop attacks. But prospects for the proposal to take hold appeared to diminish when Hamas’s leadership bluntly declared itself opposed to the terms, with the group’s military wing

In the beginning of the 2009 flu season, Barack Obama declared the H1N1 swine flu a national emergency. By October of that year 1,000 people had already died, and according to the president there was the threat of a pandemic. In order to hasten treatment and convince Americans to line up like lemmings for a flu shot, Obama gave former Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius a one-time authorization to bypass standard federal regulations to quickly respond to the outbreak. The president repeatedly warned the public that a pandemic was approaching, and that the numbers of people getting sick

Protests from local elected officials in Maryland this weekend forced the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) to cancel its plans to send illegal immigrant children to an Army Reserve center in Westminster, which is about 35 miles from Baltimore. Maryland Democrat Gov. Martin O´Malley said illegal immigrant children flooding across the border should be considered "refugees" and all be given asylum status, but after Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) publicized the federal government´s last-minute plans to sneak illegal immigrant children into Maryland, there was considerable blowback. HHS backed off, citing things like insufficient access to drinking water at the facility.

The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal just released their 2014 Index of Economic Freedom. One of the surprising results is that the United States is no longer in the top 10 freest economies in the world. In fact, the United States’s economic freedom score has declined every year since 2008. From Heritage: The United States, with an economic freedom score of 75.5, is the 12th freest economy in the 2014 Index. Its score is half a point lower than last year, primarily due to deteriorations in property rights, fiscal freedom, and business freedom. …The U.S. is the only country to have

Does President Obama want to solve the border crisis? It depends on what the meaning of "solve" is. The president says a majority of the tens of thousands of families and unaccompanied children flooding across the southwestern border will be returned to their home countries. But his actions suggest that won´t really happen. Most of Obama´s $3.7 billion border crisis spending request will go to the "care, feeding, and transportation costs of unaccompanied children and family groups," according to a statement to Congress by Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson. Even some of the costs that appear to be slated for the

Rep. The dispute started this spring after one of his neighbor’s chickens appeared on his vacation property in Holiday Lake, Iowa: Braley’s wife Carolyn attended a May 8 meeting of the Holiday Lake Owner’s Association to complain about the fowl. The dispute escalated, causing the association to incur nearly $1,700 in legal fees after Braley called the association’s attorney with an implied threat

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Former South Carolina state treasurer Thomas Ravenel has presented signatures to get on the ballot as an independent running for Lindsey Graham´s U.S. Senate seat. Ravenel said he gave 17,000 signatures when he arrived Monday at the state Election Commission in Columbia. Election officials will have to verify the signatures. That process is expected to take about a month. Ravenel became state treasurer as a Republican in 2007. He had to resign months after his election when he was charged with buying cocaine for himself and his friends. Ravenel says he is running to reduce the size of government,

There’s a very simple solution to this Obamanation that’s occurring on the southern border. Enforce the law. By which I mean, deport them. Deport them all, not just the latest huddled masses yearning to live for free, forever, in Section 8 housing on EBT cards. No, we must deport all of the 12 or 20 or 30 million illegal aliens who are turning this country into a Third World flophouse. Can we do it? Yes, we can. A few years back, Marsha Coakley famously said, “Technically, it’s not illegal to be illegal in Massachusetts.” The ways things are going, it won’t be long before

A quick recap for the happily uninitiated: The “controversial float” in question was one of many included in this year’s Independence Day parade in Norfolk, Neb. The entry, which featured a zombie standing on an outhouse marked “Obama Presidential Library,” was created by a veteran named Dale Remmich, and was designed, Remmich claims, to express the “political disgust” that he feels

The Democrats owe a growing debt to the Republican red-hots pursuing the fantasy of impeaching Barack Obama. They’re collecting a lot of cash — probably not as much as they claim, but a lot — from the naive and excitable folks in the Democratic base. Outrage is easily convertible to cash, as every bagman knows, and the Republicans should get a cut of it. Fair is fair. Sarah Palin, who as a former governor knows better than to confuse hoping with doing, is leading the baying hounds this week. She told an audience the other day that “the many impeachable offenses

Israel has accepted an Egyptian truce proposal for the conflict with Gaza. Hamas, which controls Gaza, has not formally responded. But its armed wing has rejected the plan as a "surrender". There have been no Israeli air strikes into Gaza since the 09:00 ( 06:00 GMT) truce, but at least one rocket has
