Despite roadblocks, UAW finds

CHATTANOOGA — In a move that is unusual but not unprecedented, the United Auto Workers union has sidestepped its loss in a worker vote in February and created a local union to represent workers at the Volkswagen plant in Tennessee. And what´s surprising, considering decades of fierce anti-union efforts from the other foreign-transplant automakers in the South, this time the union has the tacit approval of Volkswagen itself. "We have a consensus agreement with Volkswagen management to form the local and be recognized when we get a majority of the workers to join," said UAW International Secretary-Treasurer Gary Casteel of

The research arm dedicated to creating breakthrough technology for the Pentagon has shared video of a successful test of self-guided bullets. The Pentagon´s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency conducted a test April 21 with Teledyne Scientific & Imaging. Video posted to YouTube earlier this month shows a round with a ballistic path far from its intended target. As the round makes its way along the errant trajectory it suddenly curves, corrects itself and hits the intended target. DARPA had a promising prototype for its Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordinance (EXACTO) .50-caliber bullets in 2012, but the new video confirms that the

When Obama administration officials revealed plans this week to rebuild the White House’s bowling lanes, they failed to mention that the George W. Bush administration paid for a renovation of the facility just before President Obama took office. A former official in the Bush White House, John Dorff, said the bowling lanes in the basement of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building were rebuilt in 2007-08 in a project that took several months to complete. The renovations were needed to repair water damage caused by an unrelated construction project in the building. “Our office worked with Brunswick to replace and repair

THE LATEST blow-up between the United States and Germany over spying suggests that the Obama administration has not been observing the president’s pithiest foreign policy maxim, “Don’t do stupid [stuff].” For a year relations with Berlin have been strained by disclosures of National Security Agency surveillance of German communications and the subsequent refusal of the Obama administration to accept Chancellor Angela Merkel’s demand for a no-spying agreement. When it was revealed last fall that Ms. Merkel’s cellphone had been monitored, President Obama rightly stopped the operation; he had previously ordered a review of foreign

As a veteran, and as a governor who has supported Texas National Guard deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, I can understand the emotions behind isolationism. Many people are tired of war, and the urge to pull back is a natural, human reaction. Unfortunately, we live in a world where isolationist policies would only endanger our national security even further. That’s why it’s disheartening to hear fellow Republicans, such as Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), suggest that our nation should ignore what’s happening in Iraq. The main problem with this argument is that it means ignoring the profound threat that the group

It always comes back to the dinner table with this guy. The 75-year-old Pakistani immigrant convicted in Brooklyn of beating his wife to death because she served him lentils instead of goat should get the minimum sentence, his lawyer argued Wednesday — because the lack of Pakistani food behind bars will be a hardship. “His inability to speak English and his inability to have Pakistani food will make his incarceration even more difficult than the average inmate,” defense attorney Julie Clark wrote in court papers seeking the minimum 15 years to life sentence for Noor Hussain. LOS ANGELES — The president of the nation´s second-largest teachers union said Friday that President Barack Obama´s education chief has turned his back on the concerns of educators and parents, but she stopped short of calling for his ouster. Teachers unions have been clashing with the Obama administration over its support for charter schools and its push to use student test scores as part of teacher evaluations, a relationship that further frayed after Education Secretary Arne Duncan spoke in support of a California judge´s ruling last month that struck down tenure and other job protections for the state´s public school

Already under attack by critics who say he’s lost interest in his job, President Obama added fuel to the fire on Thursday with a drowsy appearance in Texas. A heavy-lidded Obama struggled to keep his head up during a one-on-one talk in an Austin cafe with a college student whose parents lost their jobs last year. Kinsey Button, a junior at the University of Texas at Austin, huddled with the president in a booth at the Magnolia Cafe, where he ordered hot tea and she sipped coffee while discussing her parents’ plight. The meeting was a break for Obama, who

Leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus pushed back hard against one of their own on Friday, saying Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) doesn´t speak for the group in calling to make it easier to deport Central American children amassing at the southern border. "Henry Cuellar does not represent the Congressional Hispanic Caucus," CHC Chairman Ruben Hinojosa (D-Texas) said during a press briefing. "He´s a Blue Dog; he comes to the meetings once in a long time." Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) emphasized that Cuellar is "a friend and a colleague of ours." But, he added, "we disagree with him on this issue."

Middle-class families should stop buying large fridges in order to save energy and tackle climate change, a government-commissioned report has suggested. Families could save up to £36 a year on their electricity bills by replacing large fridge-freezers or televisions with smaller appliances, according to a study published by the Department for Energy and Climate Change. The report found that the average family fridge had grown in volume by two fifths since 1985, amid a fashion for large American-style appliances, while the average television had grown by more than seven inches since 2004. By contrast, Israel has thrived under fire and is poised to become more prosperous than ever. (Snip) Eugene Volkh famously described how Asians in America became white. The process was simple: they became rich. This implicit correlation between wealth and race distorts nearly every media story. WASHINGTON— A key Republican said Friday that President Barack Obama´s multibillion-dollar emergency request for the border is too big to get through the House, as a growing number of Democrats rejected policy changes Republicans are demanding as their price for approving any money. The developments indicated that Obama faces an uphill climb as he pushes Congress to approve $3.7 billion to deal with tens of thousands of unaccompanied kids who´ve been arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border from poor and increasingly violent Central American nations. And they suggested that even as the children keep coming, any final resolution is likely weeks

WASHINGTON – Top Republican Rep. Darrell Issa Friday accused the State Department of trying to repeatedly dodge congressional efforts to look into the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman sent a 37-page letter to the newly-created House Select Committee on Benghazi detailing attempts he claimed were made to sidestep providing documents and answering questions about the attack from September 2012 until May 2014. Issa said the State Department promised to cooperate with Congress but failed to actually provide information requested and missed many

Jackson said helping these poor children is obviously a good, moral thing to do, but Obama can’t just “abandon urban America” in the process. Jackson said that there is a crisis going on in Chicago right now, with guns and drugs coming into the city while more jobs are heading out.
