Barack´s Bull Run?

For some reason the cameras that are banned on the border were not banned from the Wynkoop Brewing Co. pizza and pool hall in Colorado where, in lieu of the middle finger, Barack Obama flipped a pool stick at America, banged back a few brewskis and yukked it up with Democratic governor John Hickenlooper. Cameras being banned from liberal policy hubs most assuredly indicates that whatever is going on there, if truth be told and visuals matched with verbal accounts, the American people would be horrified. That’s probably the reason why cameras are banned from abortion clinics and sonograms are opposed

This is the moment an unarmed Connecticut woman rammed a White House barricade before being shot dead by police last fall. The startling images were released today by the U.S. Attorney´s Office as the officers who fatally shot Miriam Carey after a high-speed car chase from the White House to the Capitol learned they will not face criminal charges. One still, taken from video footage at the White House checkpoint, shows a U.S. Secret Service officer trying to get Carey´s attention after she entered the restricted area. Another shows an off-duty Secret Service officer move a barricade in front of

COLUMBIA--Republican Gov. Nikki Haley had a record fundraising haul in the past quarter, her campaign said Thursday, doubling her Democratic opponent state Sen. Vincent Sheheen´s take for the same period. Haley racked up around $1.05 million in donations for the quarter ending June 30, leaving her effort with $4.46 million in the bank, Haley´s campaign said in a statement. It was her most successful funding effort of any quarter, Haley´s campaign said. The number of donors and the campaign´s complete quarterly report--which were due by the end of Thursday--were not immediately available. Sheehen raised $505,088 from 1,819 contributors in the

Dozens of experts will be weighing in, in coming days, on Israel´s right to self-defence in response to hundreds of Hamas rockets raining down. But what about the Palestinian people, and what’s good for them? Yesterday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of committing "genocide" in Gaza with their current operation "Protective Edge." This type of inflammatory rhetoric is particularly rich coming from someone who is responsible for the murder of hundreds of Israelis (including the murder of the 1972 Israeli Olympic Team in Munich). Sadly, this is hardly the first time Abbas has made statements that, in light

A nasty polar vortex that wreaked havoc on the east coast in January is making a shock return next week--though don´t pull out your puffer coat just yet. Unseasonably chilly air is headed for parts of the northern and northeastern U.S. where residents have been sweltering in 90 degree weather this week--as one would expect in July. Thankfully, families won´t be plunged into the despair they endured during January´s brutally cold weather pattern. [Snip] According to the Washington Post, a deep pool of cool air from Alaska and Canada will plunge into the Great Lakes early next week. From there

Brazilian federal police say that some 200 Ghanaians have requested asylum after entering the country on tourist visas to watch the World Cup. The Ghanaians say they are Muslims fleeing inter-religious conflicts in their home country. They have filed their applications in the southern city of Caxias do Sul, in one of Brazil´s most prosperous areas. Another 1,000 Ghanaians are expected to request refugee status once the tournament is over, police said. The Brazilian authorities believe many of the Ghanaians are looking for the right to work legally in the country.

Texas Governor Rick Perry toured the U.S.-Mexico border today without President Barack Obama, who ultimately decided to return to Washington, D.C. this afternoon after making a pit stop for BBQ in Austin. Perry´s office says he took a boat ride down the Rio Grande river and a chopper tour of the Rio Grande Valley with the Texas Department of Public Safety this afternoon. Meanwhile, President Obama spoke at a Democratic Party fundraiser, met with someone who wrote him a letter and gave remarks on the economy before stopping by Franklin Barbeque, where he dropped more than $300 on food for

AUSTIN – Never let it be said there is no such thing as a free lunch, at least when it comes to a presidential visit. On Thursday, after President Obama finished a 40-minute speech at the historic Paramount Theater in downtown Austin, his motorcade sped a few blocks away for a quick lunch at Franklin´s, a noted barbeque spot that was packed as always with a lunch crowd. As presidents tend to do, Obama cut to the front of the line so he could order takeout for his official travel party – offering to pay for the two people he

WASHINGTON — Sen. Mark Kirk said today that 429 unaccompanied minors from the Mexican border crisis are in Chicago in the custody of a federal agency, and he wants to know if any of the children have criminal records. Kirk, an Illinois Republican, said the children are in the custody of the Health and Human Services Department. His news release did not say where the children are being housed. In the release, Kirk also said the State Department is “unable to confirm if any of these individuals has a criminal record or background.” He added: “If any of these individuals

As is his wont, President Obama is treating the border crisis — more than 50,000 unaccompanied children crossing illegally — as a public relations problem. Where to photo op and where not. He still hasn’t enunciated a policy. He may not even have one. Will these immigrants be allowed to stay? Seven times was Obama’s homeland security secretary asked this on “Meet the Press.” Seven times he danced around the question. Presidential press secretary Josh Earnest was ostensibly more forthcoming: “It’s unlikely that most of those kids will qualify for humanitarian relief. .?.?. They will be sent back.” This was

Bears, beer and horse heads: What exactly is going on with the leader of the free world? On a single day this week in Denver, President Obama scarfed down pizza and drinks with strangers, shot pool with Colorado’s governor and shook hands with a guy on the street wearing a horse mask. His top staffers are promoting these stops on Twitter with the hashtag #TheBearIsLoose — a term one of Obama’s aides coined in 2008 when the candidate would defy his schedule. More than five years into his presidency, Obama is trying to free himself from the constraints of office,

The Senate Judiciary Committee took the first step Thursday toward repealing part of the First Amendment, giving an early OK to a new amendment that would give government the power to put strict limits on all political campaign spending. The 10-8 party-line vote sends the amendment to the full Senate, where Democrats are likely to try to force a vote this month, as one of a number of politically charged issues they want to hold votes on before Congress takes a month-long summer vacation in August. Democrats said their amendment was a response to two Supreme Court rulings in recent

House Republicans announced Thursday that their first attempt to sue President Obama for breaching the limits of his executive power will be over his decision to exempt businesses from his health care law’s employer mandate. Making good on Speaker John A. Boehner’s threat last month, the Republicans released a draft of the bill to authorize Mr. Boehner to sue the president, in what Republicans say is an effort to rebalance the powers of Congress and the White House. “If this president can get away with making his own laws, future presidents will have the ability to as well. Hugo Chavez warmly embraced Obama and provided a gift, a book titled “The Open Veins of Latin America“. Immigration: Three in five Americans say the tens of thousands of minors who have crossed the border "should be ordered to leave the U.S." What about that do the Congress and president not understand? No one knows just how many tens of thousands of Central American nationals — most of them desperate, unescorted children and teens — are streaming across America´s southern border. Yet this phenomenon offers us a proverbial teachable moment about the paradoxes and hypocrisies of Latin American immigration to the U.S. For all the pop romance in Latin America associated with Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, few Latinos prefer to immigrate to such communist utopias or to socialist spinoffs like Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador or Peru. Instead, hundreds of thousands of poor people continue to risk danger to enter democratic,

I´m sure that many wiil pass off what Reuters and Yahoo News have just been caught doing as some kind of an innocent mistake, and perhaps it was. But isn´t odd how often those "mistakes" so often end up giving President Obama and the left more credit than they deserve? Yesterday, a Reuters story at Yahoo News was headlined "President Obama Visits the Border." That´s a pretty remarkable headline, given Obama´s quite widely known refusal — except perhaps by low-information Yahoo readers — to visit the Texas-Mexico border or to visit facilities where Unaccompanied Alien Children are being detained by the

Qatar was not too long ago the toast of foreign-policy insiders. It spread its largesse around Washington, and universities fell all over themselves trying to get their foot in the Qatari door. U.S. Central Command has a forward headquarters at al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar. While some saw Qatar just a few years ago as a symbol of benign neutrality, only a few scholars—COMMENTARY’s own Max Boot, for example, and Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi as well–recognized the danger which Qatar presented. The skeptics were right. Qatar has used its tremendous financial resources to become a major regional and international player. Its

Medical marijuana dispensaries in Berkeley must give some of their pot free of charge to low-income patients under an ordinance approved by the City Council. At least 2% of the marijuana each dispensary doles out needs to be given free to dispensary members who have “very low” incomes and are Berkeley residents, the ordinance, approved Tuesday, says. The ordinance also stipulates that free pot must be the same quality, on average, as the pot that other members buy. According to NBC Bay Area, the City Council has defined very low income as $32,000 a year for one person

In a stunning display of callousness, the Defense Department has announced that thousands of soldiers — many serving as commanding officers in Afghanistan — will be notified in the coming weeks that their service to the country is no longer needed. Last week, more than 1,100 Army captains — the men and women who know best how to fight this enemy because they have experienced multiple deployments — were told they’ll be retired from the Army. The overall news is not unexpected. The Army has ended its major operations in Iraq and is winding down in Afghanistan. Budget cuts are projected to shrink the Army from its current

British filmmakers must now meet new targets for ethnic minority, gay and female characters on- and off-screen if they wish to continue receiving funding from Britain’s largest public film fund. The British Film Institute has revealed its “Three Ticks” scheme, which will be implemented in September to ensure diversity in films and behind the scenes, The Telegraph reported. Films must “tick” at least two of three criteria: on-screen diversity; off-screen diversity and “creating opportunities and social mobility,” the paper reported. In the first category, at least one lead character must be “positively reflecting diversity,”

The first person on Greenwald’s list is Faisal Gill. Gill was a spokesman for the American Muslim Council (AMC) while under the leadership of now-jailed Islamist radical Abdurahman Alamoudi, who was indicted and pleaded guilty in 2003 for financing terrorism and assassination plots.
