U.S. Immigration Law Has Been
Hijacked By Immoral Special Interest

No one knows just how many tens of thousands of Central American nationals — most of them desperate, unescorted children and teens — are streaming across America´s southern border. Yet this phenomenon offers us a proverbial teachable moment about the paradoxes and hypocrisies of Latin American immigration to the U.S. For all the pop romance in Latin America associated with Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, few Latinos prefer to immigrate to such communist utopias or to socialist spinoffs like Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador or Peru. Instead, hundreds of thousands of poor people continue to risk danger to enter democratic,

I´m sure that many wiil pass off what Reuters and Yahoo News have just been caught doing as some kind of an innocent mistake, and perhaps it was. But isn´t odd how often those "mistakes" so often end up giving President Obama and the left more credit than they deserve? Yesterday, a Reuters story at Yahoo News was headlined "President Obama Visits the Border." That´s a pretty remarkable headline, given Obama´s quite widely known refusal — except perhaps by low-information Yahoo readers — to visit the Texas-Mexico border or to visit facilities where Unaccompanied Alien Children are being detained by the

Qatar was not too long ago the toast of foreign-policy insiders. It spread its largesse around Washington, and universities fell all over themselves trying to get their foot in the Qatari door. U.S. Central Command has a forward headquarters at al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar. While some saw Qatar just a few years ago as a symbol of benign neutrality, only a few scholars—COMMENTARY’s own Max Boot, for example, and Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi as well–recognized the danger which Qatar presented. The skeptics were right. Qatar has used its tremendous financial resources to become a major regional and international player. Its

Medical marijuana dispensaries in Berkeley must give some of their pot free of charge to low-income patients under an ordinance approved by the City Council. At least 2% of the marijuana each dispensary doles out needs to be given free to dispensary members who have “very low” incomes and are Berkeley residents, the ordinance, approved Tuesday, says. The ordinance also stipulates that free pot must be the same quality, on average, as the pot that other members buy. According to NBC Bay Area, the City Council has defined very low income as $32,000 a year for one person

A San Diego-based clothing company has landed in hot water over a photo showing its T-shirts featuring the body of a monkey paired off with a customized hanger depicting the face of an African-American boy. The offensive image was shared on Twitter Wednesday, sparking indignation among users who lambasted the manufacturer, Just Add A Kid, for allowing this to happen. (Snip) The company explained that the T-shirts and hooks came separately, and it was up to each individual store carrying the Just Add A Kid brand to match the two. ´The head shots on our hangers are

Detroit — James Davis, one of two remaining defendants in the attack on suburban motorist Steve Utash, received one year in jail and five years probation for his role in the incident during his sentencing before Wayne County Circuit Court Judge James Callahan on Thursday. (Snip) Davis is accused of kicking Utash twice. Lindsey pointed out that Utash was already injured when Davis struck him. She indicated the prosecutor’s office will appeal the lighter sentence. On Monday, two other defendants Wonzey Saffold, 30, and Bruce Wimbush, 18, were sentenced in the case. Saffold received a prison term of 6 years and 4 months to up to

In a stunning display of callousness, the Defense Department has announced that thousands of soldiers — many serving as commanding officers in Afghanistan — will be notified in the coming weeks that their service to the country is no longer needed. Last week, more than 1,100 Army captains — the men and women who know best how to fight this enemy because they have experienced multiple deployments — were told they’ll be retired from the Army. The overall news is not unexpected. The Army has ended its major operations in Iraq and is winding down in Afghanistan. Budget cuts are projected to shrink the Army from its current

British filmmakers ordered to provide

British filmmakers must now meet new targets for ethnic minority, gay and female characters on- and off-screen if they wish to continue receiving funding from Britain’s largest public film fund. The British Film Institute has revealed its “Three Ticks” scheme, which will be implemented in September to ensure diversity in films and behind the scenes, The Telegraph reported. Films must “tick” at least two of three criteria: on-screen diversity; off-screen diversity and “creating opportunities and social mobility,” the paper reported. In the first category, at least one lead character must be “positively reflecting diversity,”

On Wednesday, Glenn Greenwald released the names of five Muslim-Americans on whom, he alleged, the FBI and the NSA have unfairly spied. However, what is clear after further investigation is that the five named individuals in the Greenwald expose’ have alleged ties to extremism, and also have allegedly engaged in radical activities. The first person on Greenwald’s list is Faisal Gill. Gill was a spokesman for the American Muslim Council (AMC) while under the leadership of now-jailed Islamist radical Abdurahman Alamoudi, who was indicted and pleaded guilty in 2003 for financing terrorism and assassination plots.

Calling it guilty of a "profound betrayal of the ideals of the civil rights movement," the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees announced this week that was severing its partnership with the United Negro College Fund. Why? Because UNCF has accepted donations from conservative philanthropists the Koch brothers, and Dr. Michael Lomax, the fund´s president, spoke at a Koch-sponsored event. Lomax told AFSCME to get over it. "UNCF has over 100,000 donors with a wide range of views, but they all have one thing in common: They believe in helping young students of color realize their dreams of

Eddie Wayne Davis was executed by injection at Florida State Prison at 6:43 p.m. Davis declined to say any final words before his sentence was carried out. Executioners put the IV needle into Davis’ left arm around 6:30 p.m. Davis began muttering to himself after the process began, but witnesses in the viewing area couldn’t hear what he was saying because the speakers had been turned off. One published list of participants is from Christian Post: Those who attend the border crisis meeting at Love Field Airport in Dallas include: Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings; Rep. There is no better manifestation of the rancorous partisan gridlock that has gripped Congress in recent years than the parties´ proxy war between Reps. Elijah Cummings and Darrell Issa. Issa, 60, is the firebrand Republican chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He has hammered the Obama administration over its handling of the Benghazi attacks, the IRS and Veterans Affairs scandals, as well the troubled rollout of its heathcare.gov website and a host of other hot-button issues. It has been up to Cummings, 63, the panel’s top Democrat, to be the first line of defense for the administration

President Obama was absolutely swamped the other night, staving off the munchies at a pizza party in the Mile High city, hobnobbing as headliner at numerous Democrat shindigs, collecting big bucks from big donors all day. Whew. Exhausting. Especially exhausting must be trying to change pace and pivot through the fundraising parties, knowing they’re thrown by those much maligned “fat cats” (Obama’s words, not mine). The president conveniently disparages these fat cats in public, but in private their group hugs are a whole lot of cuddlin,’ purrin’ and rolling over for more tummy tickling from the one who feeds them.

Millions of Israelis run, and must pull their children, into shelters each day. Prime Minister Netanyahu has discussed this with French president Hollande and with German chancellor Merkel. But not with President Obama, who has not seen fit to call Netanyahu or take a call from him. This is quite amazing behavior for an ally. I am aware as all readers are that the two men have a difficult relationship, but that is no justification.
