An IRS help line worker has been suspended for 100 days without pay for urging callers to reelect President Barack Obama in 2012, the U.S. Office of Special Counsel announced on Thursday. The employee, who was not named, “acknowledged that he had used his authority and influence as an IRS customer service representative for a political purpose and did so while at work,” according to a news release from the ethics watchdog agency. The “complaint alleged that, when fielding taxpayers’ questions on an IRS customer service help line, the employee repeatedly urged taxpayers to reelect President Obama in 2012 by

Environmental Protection Agency regulations banning the use of the chemical methyl bromide since 2005 are threatening peach orchards in Louisiana, Watchdog reports. Joe Mitchin’s family-owned business of peach orchards in northern Louisiana is slowly dying off. Orchard owners traditionally use methyl bromide to treat diseased peach trees, but owing to the advent of EPA regulations in 2005, Mitchin has been unable to treat his orchard, leading to a steady decline in production. The destruction of peach trees has forced Mitchin to downsize his company, laying off 40 employees, according to Watchdog. Business expenses are difficult to cover, and so the orchard, which

A Democrat-backed super PAC called Maine Forward has committed to spending $2 million against Republican Gov. Paul LePage and for Democratic nominee Mike Michaud in the run-up to the Pine Tree State´s elections this fall, according to the Bangor Daily News. LePage is a top target for the Democratic Governors Association, and a report published in Talking Points Memo that he discussed executing Democrats in a meeting with a sovereign citizen group called the Aroostook Watchmen have only burnished their hopes. LePage said that execution was not a discussion item in the meetings. But regardless, the news didn’t do him

The effect on the congressional immigration debate after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s surprising primary loss should not be about whether to have reform, but whether that reform should be about increasing foreign labor or reducing it. Cantor represented the unanimous views of the leadership of both parties, which have only differed in how and how much to increase lifetime immigrants, guest workers and legalizations of unlawful foreign visitors. By stressing the opposite option — reductions in legal immigration — during his campaign against Cantor, victorious economics professor Dave Brat has suddenly given hope to the

While an estimated 400 illegal immigrant children stream across America´s southwest border every day in August, President Barack Obama will take a 15-day vacation in a $12 million home nearly as far away as it´s possible to travel in the continental United States. The pricey real estate belongs to a wealthy Connecticut widow whose late husband, then a General Electric executive, made $6,900 in donations to Hillary Clinton´s presidential campaign in 2007 and 2008 – then the maximum allowed by law. ´On Saturday, August 9th, the president and the first lady will travel to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts,´ a White House

Back in 2012, I shared a sadly amusing image about how the modern political process has degenerated into two wolves and a sheep voting what to have for lunch. I was making an argument in that column against majoritarianism (and that is a critical issue, as explained in this video), but there’s also a very mportant moral component to this debate. Walter Williams addresses this issue in his latest column. He starts by asking a hypothetical question. Suppose I saw a homeless, hungry elderly woman huddled on a heating grate in the dead of winter. To help the woman, I ask somebody for

Unlike many of his Republican colleagues, Karl Rove advocated Thursday for bipartisan compromise on immigration. “Republicans have to look at this as an opportunity that they have to work,” the Republican strategist said on the Fox News program “Happening Now.” “It’s an opportunity to get some things done to help secure the border.” He suggested that in working with President Barack Obama’s $3.7 billion request for additional funds to deal with the current immigration crisis, Republicans could make policy gains like increasing the amount of border patrols. “They ought to sit down in good faith,” he said of Republicans and the

Washington - President Barack Obama is telling Israel´s leader that the United States is willing to negotiate a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Obama spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, as Israel was intensifying an bombardment of the Gaza Strip in an attempt to thwart rocket fire targeting Israel. The White House says Obama condemned the rockets and said Israel has the right to self-defense. But Obama also urged both sides not to escalate the crisis and to restore calm. Obama also relayed concerns about a Palestinian-American teenager who was detained and apparently beaten by Israeli authorities.

House Speaker John Boehner´s lawsuit against President Barack Obama will focus on Obama´s 2013 decision to unilaterally delay implementation of the so-called employer mandate of the Affordable Care Act. Boehner´s office released a draft document on Thursday of the resolution set to be filed in the House of Representatives, which would authorize the chamber to take legal action against the president. "Today we’re releasing a draft resolution that will authorize the House to file suit over the way President Obama unilaterally changed the employer mandate," Boehner said in a statement.

House Republicans are getting more traction with that idea than impeaching the president himself. enator Ted Cruz (R., Texas) and a group of House lawmakers are building a case for impeaching Attorney General Eric Holder. (snip) Gosar says the process should begin with the House taking a vote of no confidence in Holder, before the August recess (141 lawmakers have co-sponsored his no-confidence resolution). If, as is nearly certain, Obama were to ignore such a no-confidence vote and refuse to remove Holder during the August recess, then impeachment proceedings would begin in September, according to Gosar’s plan.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul claimed this morning that the president did not include a formal request for Congress to change the existing law after telling them in a letter last week he supported revisions because his party successfully pressured him not to. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi did not indicate that her caucus

In a press conference in Dallas on Wednesday, President Obama responded to critics who noted he was refusing to visit the border in a time of crisis. Needless to say, commentators noted the absolute absurdity of that statement - it would be hilarious if the crisis weren´t so serious. According to many critics, Israel is slaughtering civilians in Gaza. It’s “purposefully wiping out entire families,” says an Arab member of Israel’s parliament. It’s committing “genocide—the murder of entire families,” says Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority. Iran says Israel has committed “massacres against the defenseless Palestinians.” The charges are false. By the standards of war, Israel’s efforts to spare civilians have been exemplary. Israel didn’t choose this fight. Hamas and Islamic Jihad, the terrorist organizations that dominate Gaza, claim that Israel provoked the conflict by arresting Hamas members in the West Bank. WASHINGTON — Four minutes after the Senate returned from its Fourth of July recess this week, Harry Reid laced into Mitch McConnell. Senate Republican leaders were throwing a “temper tantrum,” Reid told the Senate. Their conduct was “outrageous.” Once uncommon, it was another ugly yet routine day in the dysfunctional United States Senate. Reid and McConnell can barely stand each other. Their feud echoes America’s political mood: Polarized. Angry. Untrusting. And it’s a key reason Congress doesn’t work. Routine spending bills are caught in the maelstrom, stalled in a standoff that could trigger another showdown in September over funding the federal government. In

David Cameron abandoned his year-long resistance to tightening the accountability of the security services as the price for winning Liberal Democrat and Labour support for emergency surveillance laws. Standing alongside Nick Clegg, the prime minister unveiled emergency laws, to be bundled through parliament in days, designed to shore up the powers of spies, police and government agencies. But Cameron agreed to a "sunset clause" time-limiting the bill to 2016, a full-scale review of intercept laws, a new oversight board and restrictions on the number of public bodies that can make use of surveillance data.
