President Barack Obama has backed off a request for Congress to give his administration more latitude to deport illegal immigrant children coming to the U.S. from Central America, two high-profile Republican members of Congress said today. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul claimed this morning that the president did not include a formal request for Congress to change the existing law after telling them in a letter last week he supported revisions because his party successfully pressured him not to. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi did not indicate that her caucus

In a press conference in Dallas on Wednesday, President Obama responded to critics who noted he was refusing to visit the border in a time of crisis. "This isn´t theater," the President said, before going further and saying "I´m not interested in photo ops." "Not interested in photo ops." Really, President Barack Obama said that. Needless to say, commentators noted the absolute absurdity of that statement - it would be hilarious if the crisis weren´t so serious. A hashtag was spawned on Twitter as people noted the obsession that this White House has seemed to have with photo ops:

According to many critics, Israel is slaughtering civilians in Gaza. It’s “purposefully wiping out entire families,” says an Arab member of Israel’s parliament. It’s committing “genocide—the murder of entire families,” says Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority. Iran says Israel has committed “massacres against the defenseless Palestinians.” The charges are false. By the standards of war, Israel’s efforts to spare civilians have been exemplary. Israel didn’t choose this fight. Hamas and Islamic Jihad, the terrorist organizations that dominate Gaza, claim that Israel provoked the conflict by arresting Hamas members in the West Bank. But arrests in one territory don’t justify

It appears that former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin went out on a limb when she said that the proper way to address President Barack Obama’s executive overreach would be to appeal to the impeachment process. (Snip)The Wall Street Journal editorial board perhaps made the case against Palin’s call for impeachment a bit harshly when they implied that she was speaking purely out of self-interest. “Sarah Palin joined the impeachment calls on Tuesday, which could mean that the former Alaska Governor has been feeling neglected,” the WSJ editorial read. “She is following the talk radio hosts and obscure authors who

New York - The FBI monitored the interactions between Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress and leftwing groups in the US through the 1980s and 1990s as part of its ongoing investigations into what the bureau deemed to be the communist threat to US national security, new documents reveal. Then, for the first time in his presidency, the Secret Service stood down and Obama promised to meet with them before he left. [Snip] ´Come on, sit down. I’ll talk to you afterwards, I promise. Blood feud: Senate leaders

WASHINGTON — Four minutes after the Senate returned from its Fourth of July recess this week, Harry Reid laced into Mitch McConnell. Senate Republican leaders were throwing a “temper tantrum,” Reid told the Senate. Their conduct was “outrageous.” Once uncommon, it was another ugly yet routine day in the dysfunctional United States Senate. Reid and McConnell can barely stand each other. Their feud echoes America’s political mood: Polarized. Angry. Untrusting. And it’s a key reason Congress doesn’t work. Routine spending bills are caught in the maelstrom, stalled in a standoff that could trigger another showdown in September over funding the federal government. In

David Cameron abandoned his year-long resistance to tightening the accountability of the security services as the price for winning Liberal Democrat and Labour support for emergency surveillance laws. Standing alongside Nick Clegg, the prime minister unveiled emergency laws, to be bundled through parliament in days, designed to shore up the powers of spies, police and government agencies. But Cameron agreed to a "sunset clause" time-limiting the bill to 2016, a full-scale review of intercept laws, a new oversight board and restrictions on the number of public bodies that can make use of surveillance data.

On Wednesday, Senate Democrats introduced a bill that would force Christians and other conscientious objectors to pay for drugs and devices, including the "week-after" pill, that may kill human embryos. The new bill was drafted in response to Supreme Court´s ruling last week that Obamacare´s so-called contraceptive mandate as applied to family-owned religious businesses was a violation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The Democrats´ legislation would strip away the religious freedom law´s protections for Americans who provide health benefits to their employees. The text of the bill states that an

A student in Taiwan who kept a pair of disposable contact lenses in her eyes for six months has been left blinded after a microscopic bug devoured her eyeballs. The tiny single-cell amoeba ate away at undergraduate Lian Kao´s sight because she didn´t take out and clean the contacts once during that time. According to a warning issued by doctors the case was a particularly severe example of a young person under pressure who did not take the time to carry out basic hygiene on their contact lenses. As well as being regularly cleaned, contact lenses should also be removed when swimming and washing.

Washington and Lee University expressed regret Tuesday for the school’s past ownership of slaves and promised to remove Confederate flags from the main chamber of its Lee Chapel after a group of black students protested that the historic Virginia school was unwelcoming to minorities. President Kenneth P. Ruscio’s announcement was a surprising move for the small, private liberal arts college in Lexington, which has long celebrated its Southern heritage. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee served as the university’s president after the Civil War, his crypt is beneath the chapel, and the school has gingerly addressed its ties to the Confederacy

Central Texas, especially that sweet spot halfway between Dallas and Austin where small swaths of the legendary old prairies remain, is an earthly paradise. Blowsy live oaks spread their heavy limbs beneath cloud-spattered skies, while creeks and rivers—most prominently the meandering Brazos—ripple alongside gently rolling pastures gilded with waving grasses. These natural glories are precisely what led Laura and George W. Bush to choose the area for their Prairie Chapel Ranch, the retreat they completed in 2001, just after he became the 43rd president of the United States. The terrorist group Hamas claimed late Wednesday that it attempted to target Israel´s nuclear reactor in the desert town of Dimona by firing three long-range M-75 rockets at the facility. One of the rockets was destroyed in mid-flight by Israel´s Iron Dome system, and two fell harmlessly in the rocky Negev. However, merely by targeting the nuclear facility, Hamas has committed nuclear terrorism, according to United Nations treaties. Article 2 (1) of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism states: 1. The NRA went after two or three state senators in a part of Colorado where I don’t think there’s roads,” said Bloomberg in the interview published online Wednesday.
