Newspaper says sorry after
Clooney slams story

LONDON — Britain´s Daily Mail newspaper apologized to George Clooney on Wednesday for alleging his fiancee´s mother opposed the marriage on religious grounds — a story Clooney called both wrong and irresponsible. Clooney is engaged to Beirut-born London lawyer Amal Alamuddin, whose father Ramzi belongs to a prominent Druse family. The Druse are adherents of a monotheistic religion based mainly in Lebanon, Syria and Israel. Citing unnamed family "friends," the newspaper´s MailOnline website reported this week that her mother, Baria Alamuddin, wanted her 36-year-old daughter to marry a Druse man. It said Amal Alamuddin risked being "cast out of the community" if

Actor George Clooney had harsh words for Britain’s Daily Mail in a searing essay penned for USA Today that the paper published on its Web site Wednesday morning. At issue was a recent article in which the British newspaper said that the mother of Clooney’s betrothed, Amal Alamuddin, was against their upcoming marriage because Clooney is not Druze, a small Middle-Eastern religion with communities in Lebanon and Syria. Alamuddin is a British-Lebanese human rights barrister in London. The Daily Mail, citing “close family friends,” reported Alamuddin’s mother, Baria, wanted her to marry someone Druze.

New Poll: A Third Of Hispanics
Blame Obama For Border Meltdown
Daily Caller, by Neil Munro    Original Article

An unreleased poll shows that one third of Hispanic voters and political independents strongly blame President Barack Obama for the border breakdown that has allowed at least 100,000 unskilled Central Americans to flood over the border. The poll matches other polls showing that middle-class Hispanics oppose a large inflow of illegal or unskilled immigrants. The public’s hostile reaction to the border meltdown means trouble for the senators who voted in June 2013 for a business-backed bill that encouraged the Central American migration, said Roy Beck, the director of NumbersUSA. The 2013 bill, which was rejected by House GOP legislators, would have amnestied at

President Obama did not say “yes,” but he also did not say “no” when asked by a man in a Colorado bar Tuesday night if he wanted to smoke marijuana. Obama merely laughed when, as he was greeting a crowd at a Denver bar, 24-year-old Matthew Anton held a joint up in the air and asked “You want to hit this?” “Asked him if he wanted a hit of pot…he laughed! #legalizeit #iinhaled #mrGQ” wrote Anton on Instagram. The offer capped an interesting night for Obama, who is in Colorado to attend two fundraisers. He and Gov. John Hickenlooper were

A note from Paul Solman: Around the world of economic history, in 80 words: In the beginning, humans were hunter-gatherers and lived a pretty easy life, though only until the age of 35 or so, on average. About 12,000 years ago or less, folks discovered agriculture, and population exploded — but material life actually became harder than before. Then came the Industrial Revolution and at least in the West, sudden and steady economic growth that made us rich: “A Farewell to Alms,” as economic historian Greg Clark put it in his first controversial book seven years ago. Budget cuts and tight resources plague Newark public schools, but even in these tough economic times, the Newark Public Schools District has approved tens of thousands of dollars a month in spending on take-out food and catering. An I-Team review of district spending over a 15-month period ending in May found that Newark administrators spent more than $330,000, or an average of about $22,000 a month on food from places like Sandwiches Unlimited, SuzyQue´s BBQ, and King’s Family Restaurant and Catering. This, as the district faces a $42 million budget gap. In the spring, hundreds of Newark high school

The Department of Veterans Affairs paid out more than $100,000 in bonuses last year to top executives at facilities that ignored whistleblower complaints of poor patient care. Whistleblowers have played key roles in uncovering systemic problems at VA hospitals across the country, revealing long wait times, cooked appointment books and bad treatment of veterans. Although the VA later confirmed many of the accusations, officials often failed to take reports seriously and, in some cases, retaliated against the whistleblowers, employees and government investigators told Congress on Tuesday. “A problem isn’t allowed to exist within the Phoenix VA care system unless senior

Last week, conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt interviewed Zach Carter, who is The Huffington Post‘s senior political economy reporter. The interview’s purpose was to discuss Carter’s negative response to Hewitt’s previous interview of former Vice President Dick Cheney. The interview was lively and interesting but it did not go well for Carter, who was forced to admit his ignorance of the historical context of the situation in Iraq. Looked at one way, the interview might almost seem like pointless point-scoring. In response to Hewitt’s questions, Carter admitted he didn’t know who Alger Hiss was and that he hadn’t read The Looming

Yes, that is the commander in chief shaking hands with a person wearing a horse mask in Denver. That was a little bit before someone in the crowd offered the president marijuana -- legal in Colorado -- which he declined, smiling. The horse picture, snapped Tuesday night while President Obama walked and greeted people on the streets of downtown, went viral almost as fast as it was clicked. Needless to say, the Internet had a field day.

The tales of one violent weekend in New York are by turns familiar, surreal and heartbreaking. And they’re growing in number this year. There’s Deleta Crawford, paralyzed from the waist down by a stray bullet after grocery shopping. Ibrahim Diabate, guilty only of working on his jump shot. Renee Shaw, one of four wounded at a joyous neighborhood picnic. The three were carrying on their normal lives until in an instant they became gunshot victims. There were drive-by shootings, and gang disputes, and bullets fired through a third-floor apartment window. Three more victims, in a particularly cruel twist, were targeted

Clooney issued a statement accusing the Mail of irresponsibility in publishing what he said was "a completely fabricated story." It stated that Alamuddin´s mother, Baria,

When President Obama gets outside and tries to meet real people, the White House likes to say that "the bear is loose" -- and such was the case Tuesday in Denver. During a night out in the Mile High City, Obama munched pizza with supporters, greeted residents on a downtown street, and shot some pool. First came a stop at a popular spot called the Wazee Supper Club, where Obama shared pizza with five people who wrote him letters. The president also roamed the restaurant greeting patrons, at one point complimenting a bartender´s multi-hued facial hair by saying, "that´s a

A bad case of whiplash. That’s what it feels like watching the Obama Administration talk about immigration enforcement. Two weeks ago, Obama told ABC News that most of the recent illegal border crossers would be sent home. Then on Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson refused to answer straightforward questions about deporting them. And now as the President seeks an additional $3.8 billion from Congress to deal with the crisis, the White House is trying to convince us anew that they are serious about enforcement. Right, and if you like your health insurance plan, you can keep it. “The immigration

Mark Zuckerberg’s immigration reform push had all the capital, connections and star power to merit success. But not even Silicon Valley could make this investment — and the Facebook founder’s first foray into national politics — pay off. Tech leaders poured millions into FWD.us, an immigration advocacy group that has dominated ad buys, launched elaborate hackathons and coddled conservatives in an effort to revamp the country’s immigration system. It galloped into the debate with the tech industry’s classic certainty but wound up facing the same obstacles that have halted reform for decades.

There is simply no downside for Sarah Palin in calling for Barack Obama’s impeachment. She grabs a nice bit of media attention. She rallies her conservative base. She gets to talk about it on Fox. And since she holds no elective office, she doesn’t have to worry about whether her rhetorical broadside has the slightest chance of succeeding. In fact, the chances that the House will impeach a second straight Democratic president are extremely remote. But so what? Palin gets the issue and positions herself on the leading edge of anti-Obamaism. The former Alaska governor and Fox News contributor launched her attack yesterday
