Three loud explosions rocked Jerusalem on Tuesday night following a day of airstrikes in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip by Israeli forces. Air sirens sounded in the Israeli capital at 9pm local time, shortly followed by four bright flashes lighting the sky southwest of the city. [Snip] The Israeli military launched what could be a long-term offensive earlier in the day, striking more than 100 sites and mobilising troops for a possible ground invasion aimed at stopping a heavy barrage of rocket attacks against Israel. At least 15 Palestinians, including three children, were killed in the attacks from air and sea, Palestinian

Today, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced that Cleveland will host the 2016 Republican National Convention during a live, on-air interview with Fox News. Cleveland beat out Dallas for the rights to host the convention. From Cleveland.com: Cleveland edged out Dallas, the other finalist, as the recommended location for the convention, giving the city an opportunity to strut its stuff to a national crowd while placing Ohio even more firmly in the political spotlight for the upcoming presidential election. “I think it’s great,” Rob Frost, the Cuyahoga County Republican Party Chairman, said in an interview late Tuesday morning. “I’m really

Israel came under a heavy barrage of rocket fire on Tuesday night, with code red sirens sounding off in central Israel, the Jerusalem area and as far North as Binyamina. More than 40 rockets were fired into Israel in the biggest ever salvo of long-range fire from Gaza. The Iron Dome rocket defense system intercepted a number of rockets and no significant injuries have been reported in the attack. An Iron Dome battery intercepted a projectile over the greater Tel Aviv area for the second time on Tuesday evening. Two loud thuds were heard by residents in downtown Jerusalem shortly

Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama draws on the deep well of his wisdom and his foreign policy successes to instruct Israelis on the path to peace in today’s Haaretz column “Peace is the only true path to security for Israel and the Palestinians.” Warning: Reading may induce nausea. “In President Abbas, Israel has a counterpart committed to a two-state solution and security cooperation with Israel,” Obama writes. Benjamin Netanyahu? The observant reader — such as Josh Lederman, the author of this AP story — will note that Obama offered no parallel praise for Netanyahu. He also omits any mention

Parliamentarians from across the aisle submitted a draft constitutional reform on Thursday, requesting that the length of presidential terms be extended to six years, arguing that the current term — four years without the possibility of re-election — is not long enough to deliver a major presidential program. Should the reform ultimately succeed, it would represent the fifth time in Chile’s history that a constitutional reform has altered the length of a presidential term. “A period of four years is not enough to manage and develop large projects,” Socialist Party (PS) Dep. Christian Urízar said, according to La Nación. “The current system

SAN DIEGO - A third plane filled with Central American immigrants landed at Lindbergh Field Monday morning as protests continued at the Border Patrol station in Murrieta. Three Department of Human Services buses shuttled some 140 immigrants from the plane to a Border Patrol station in San Ysidro. Once they arrived, agents wearing plastic gloves conducted pat downs on some of the Central American immigrants. Protesters waited for the immigrants in Murrieta, about 80 miles north of San Ysidro. It was not immediately clear where the immigrants would be taken. Some protesters held signs that read, "If fences don´t work, why does the White

Chile´s support for Britain during the Falklands War has been revealed for the first time by the man who was dispatched, with only hours notice, to secure a South American ally, according to an article in the Daily Telegraph credited to Harriet Alexander. Sidney Edwards, now aged 80, was then a 47-year-old official in the RAF. In conditions of upmost secrecy, he was to play a key role in the conflict, awarded an OBE for his efforts – and believes that Chile´s support was vital to the British victory. Then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was reportedly so reliant on his intelligence

The Australian government has admitted it has 153 people, including children, in custody at sea while it fights a High Court challenge to any plans to send them back to Sri Lanka. Until Tuesday´s court hearing in Melbourne, the government had refused to confirm or deny it was holding the suspected asylum seekers, in line with its policy of not commenting on operational matters under "Operation Sovereign Borders." All those on board are thought to be Tamils who left the Indian port of Pondicherry on a 72-foot boat in mid-June. They include three-year-old Febrina, whose image was released by a worried relative

Conservatives have for a generation spent too much time complaining about the liberal dominance of popular culture, and too little making their own. But — as I argue in National Review this month — there is a growing countercultural revolt against the ingrained (and often unconscious) liberalism of mainstream popular culture, a revolt that has so far escaped widespread notice, though you can find some of it on Liberty Island, a website I founded that is devoted to the best in conservative fiction. After reading my introduction to this literary revolt, the editors of BuzzFeed asked me to suggest a

These vials were labeled “variola,” which the CDC calls “the severe and most common form of smallpox,” so that’s reassuring. The vials were discovered last week in an unused part of a storage room inside a laboratory operated by the Food and Drug Administration, the CDC said in a news release. They were found by employees preparing to move the lab, which has been operated by

A furniture store in Takoma Park, Maryland that calls itself a “Weapons Free Environment” took its policy a bit too far on Independence Day. That’s when a loss prevention officer at IKEA approached Alan Goldberg, who carried a visible, holstered firearm into the store, telling him he would have to leave the premises or place the weapon in his vehicle, according to NBC Washington. The request caught Goldberg off guard: he is Takoma Park’s chief of police, and he was in uniform during his visit.

Thirteen percent of the UK population equates to about 8.4 million people, or the entire population of London. A number of Israelis have already been injured, though thankfully without

Lawyers representing Dinesh D’Souza’s newest film, America, have fired off a letter to Google demanding that the search engine correct problems that they say are hampering the ability of consumers to figure out where the movie is playing. The letter claims that Google has been confusing America with 2016: Obama’s America, which was D’Souza’s first movie and has been out of theaters for two years, while Lionsgate released America on July 2 and it is currently playing in about 1,100 theaters nationwide. Google, according to the letter, has been "misdirecting many users who mistakenly believed the film was not playing in theaters.

Sen. Robert Menendez is asking the Justice Department to pursue evidence obtained by U.S. investigators that the Cuban government concocted an elaborate plot to smear him with allegations that he cavorted with underage prostitutes, according to people familiar with the discussions. In a letter sent to Justice Department officials, the senator’s attorney asserts that the plot was timed to derail the political rise of Menendez (D-N.J.), one of Washington’s most ardent critics of the Castro regime. At the time, Menendez was running for reelection and was preparing to assume the powerful chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. According to
