Feds limit reporters on

As members of Congress and reporters ask to visit federal facilities housing children who have been apprehended by the U.S. in recent months, federal officials are slapping limits on members of the news media who want a glimpse inside. For example, an email sent to news organizations by Jesus Garcia, a public affairs officer for the Administration for Children and Families, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, sets out a number of restrictions on reporters if they want to visit "Unaccompanied Alien Children" being held at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. "The purpose of this 40-minute tour

A US diplomat has been ordered to leave Bahrain after meeting members of a leading Shia opposition group, say Bahrain officials. Tom Malinowski, US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, went to Bahrain on Sunday. While there, he met members of al-Wefaq, a move which the foreign ministry of Bahrain says intervened in the country´s domestic affairs.[Snip] In meeting al-Wefaq, Mr Malinowski´s actions ran "counter to conventional diplomatic norms", the foreign ministry argued. The small island nation near the Arabian Peninsula has experienced frequent protests by Shias, who seek enhanced political rights.

Afghan presidential contender Abdullah Abdullah has claimed victory in last month´s poll, despite results giving a lead to his rival, Ashraf Ghani. Addressing supporters in Kabul, Mr Abdullah repeated claims that the election process was marred by fraud. US Secretary of State John Kerry had earlier warned against a power grab, amid reports that Mr Abdullah was planning a "parallel government". Meanwhile, a bomb near Kabul has killed 16 people, including four Nato troops. Ten civilians and two police officers were also reportedly killed in the attack on a clinic near Bagram, home to the largest US base in the

Israel must avoid being drawn

As Israel intensifies its air strikes against Hamas´ positions in Gaza, it is important to remember that no one should blame the Israelis for this sudden resumption of violence. Whenever the Jewish state takes action to defend itself against the volleys of Hamas missiles being fired indiscriminately--and without provocation--against Israeli residential neighbourhoods, Israel usually gets all the blame. If only the Israelis would make peace with the Palestinians and stop occupying their land then none of this would be happening, or so the argument goes. If only it were that simple. For the reality of the situation is that Israel today increasingly

Shrapnel from rockets landed on the deck of a German cruise ship as it left the Israeli port of Ashdod. German news sources said the 2,000-plus passenger ship AIDAdiva (a German arm of the Costa Cruises brand owned by Carnival Corporation) was leaving the Israeli Mediterranean port at around 8.30pm yesterday when sirens began to sound, warning Israeli cities of attacks. Explosions in Ashdod, Israel’s fifth largest city, could be seen from the ship, AIDAdiva. Guests on board were immediately informed by the ship’s officers, according to a press statement released by AIDA Cruises last night.

Israel is laying preparations for an invasion of Gaza as its latest conflict with Hamas intensifies, it was reported on Tuesday. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, isued the orders to the Israeli army for a possible ground offensive in a three-hour meeting with defence chiefs, according to Israel´s Haaretz newspaper. "The prime minister´s instruction by the end of the meeting was to prepare for a thorough, long, continuous and strong campaign in Gaza," a senior Israeli official told Haaretz. "The prime minister instructed the army to be ready to go all in. A ground offensive is on the table."

Hefty performance bonuses were paid last year to 64 Department of Veterans Affairs medical directors who oversaw hospitals, including some where patient wait lists were falsified and preventable patient deaths occurred, according to data obtained by the Washington Examiner. Also collecting a merit bonus of $12,579 last year was John Pierce, the head of the agency´s medical inspection unit, who retired this month after being slammed by the independent Office of Special Counsel for downplaying whistleblower complaints about inadequate patient care. Almost 300 top managers, members of the Senior Executive Service, collected merit bonuses totaling more than $2.7 million last

[Snip] Writing in emotional terms, he said he couldn´t imagine the pain suffered by the parents of the three Israeli teens, but was also heartbroken by the senseless murder of a Palestinian teenager who many suspect was killed as payback. As of Tuesday morning, one day before he flies to Texas for political fundraisers, President Obama had no plans to visit any of the overwhelmed Border Patrol stations in Texas, nor did he plan to visit the facilities where thousands of Central American children are being housed on the taxpayers´ dime. "We´re not worried about those optics," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told a reporter who asked him if the Obama administration should be worried about how it will look for the president to be in Texas and ignore the border crisis. 1) No matter what they fail at, it´s always someone else´s fault. George Bush did it, the Republicans are mean, the dog ate Obama´s homework. It´s not his fault that he´s flunking every class! 2) They don´t read history, they think their parents are stupid, and they don´t need to know anything other than how they feel to make a decision. So despite the fact that everyone tells them that tying a towel around their neck will not allow them to jump off the roof like Superman, they´re going to do it anyway.

A massive influx of unlawful immigrants from Central America has policymakers searching for quick fix. El Salvador remains home base for the most violent regional street gangs, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18 (M-18). Barack Obama will be in Texas this week to pick up some more payola from his fat cat Democrat friends. He’ll attend fundraisers in Dallas and Austin followed by a speech on the economy at the Paramount Theater so he can stick the taxpayers for the travel bill. But according to his top men, he won’t be hugging any lice-ridden children staying at makeshift shelters on the border. Both his Department of Homeland(DHS) and Press Secretary were asked if Obama would check out the “humanitarian crisis” on the Texas-Mexico border. The president offered no parallel praise for Netanyahu, who is only mentioned by name once in the piece. Obama´s comments, published in Hebrew, Arabic and English, were his first public comments on Middle Eastern affairs since the murder of three

Back in the heyday of the British Empire, a man from one of the colonies addressed a London audience. "Please do not do any more good in my country," he said. "We have suffered too much already from all the good that you have done." That is essentially the message of an outstanding new book by Jason Riley about blacks in America. Its title is "Please Stop Helping Us." Its theme is that many policies designed to help blacks are in fact harmful, sometimes devastatingly so. These counterproductive policies range from minimum wage laws to "affirmative action" quotas. This book untangles the controversies,

As Americans celebrated this nation´s birthday on July 4, most were likely unaware of a less uplifting commemoration that fell on the calendar during the same holiday weekend. That was Cost of Government Day, or July 6, 2014. The date´s significance is one of political math and symbolism. By the time 2014 ends, local, state and federal governments will have consumed the equivalent of every dime of national production created between New Year´s Day and July 6. The money goes to government spending and regulatory compliance. Americans have only from Monday until year´s end to produce anything for themselves. The concept

Who has done more to brighten the lives of the world’s less fortunate: Hillary Clinton (1947-present)? Or the Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997)? Put another (less trollish) way: What has Hillary Clinton done for poor people that distinguishes her from any other liberal celebrity with a massive bank account and a burning desire to prove to the world how much she cares by raising money and attending galas? What has she done recently, now that her salary is no longer funded by the American taxpayer? Obviously, the Clinton Foundation does some laudable work, as do many well-funded charity organizations, such as

It’s beginning to sink in with the intelligentsia: The flood of illegal aliens (yes, I said “illegal”) and particularly the tsunami of children traveling alone — parents risking their youngsters’ lives by sending them from Central America through gang-ravaged Mexico — threatens to turn the immigration debate into a major political liability for Democrats in November. While immigration is typically low on the list of issues Americans care most about, it was to be a trump card for the left in turning out otherwise apathetic or demoralized Hispanic and liberal voters four months from now. But, as seems to be the

Often, crazy things seem normal for a time because logical catastrophes do not immediately follow. A deeply suspicious Richard Nixon systematically and without pushback for years undermined and politicized almost every institution of the federal government, from the CIA and the FBI to the IRS and the attorney general’s office. Nixon seemed to get away with it — until his second term. Once the public woke up, however, the eventual accounting proved devastating: resignation of a sitting president, prison sentences for his top aides, collapse of the Republican party, government stasis, a ruined economy, the destruction of the Vietnam peace accords
