Ramadan Rage: How Crime Increases

The Holy Month of Ramadan is upon us. Most people know the month-long fast is a time Muslims are expected to demonstrate self-control, humility and submission to the will to Allah. What you might not know is that throughout Ramadan emergency services are overwhelmed by a spike in crime—a phenomenon known as “Ramadan rage,” which affects not just Muslim countries, but cities with high concentrations of believers, from Dearborn to Deptford. The effects of this gruelling annual fast have been widely studied. Researchers say those taking part risk migraines, dehydration, dizziness, tachycardia, nausea, circulatory collapse... and even gout, owing to

After introducing a panel containing the D.C. bureau chiefs of three major American newspapers on Monday morning, MSNBC’s Chuck Todd took a swipe at NewsBusters by joking that this segment would be a “nightmare scenario” for the conservative media watchdog site and its founder Brent Bozell. “With me a trio of chiefs,” Todd began his intros. “Carolyn Ryan is Washington bureau chief and political editor for the New York Times, Dan Balz is the chief correspondent for the Washington Post, and Susan Page is Washington bureau chief for USA Today.” “This is really a nightmare scenario for Brent Bozell,” he joked

Illegal aliens presumed to have exposed border patrol agents in San Diego, California, to scabies may have been released into the general population, according to a July 4 letter from Ronald Zermeno, director of Health and Safety of a local chapter of the National Border Patrol Council, the union representing Border Patrol agents. “We do not know exactly which detainee was infected and processed at Brown Field that resulted in the agent contracting this disease," the letter, sent to Paul Beeson, Chief Patrol agent at the U.S. Border Patrol in Chula Vista, CA, said. "We suspect that they could have

Inside Politics’ John King quoted Red State blogger Erick Erickson this morning about House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) “political stunt” to sue President Barack Obama over his executive orders rather than begin impeachment proceedings, as the GOP base wants. Erickson, not known for his delicacy, basically accused Boehner of not having the balls to go full-impeachment. King apologized beforehand for the phrasing. “It’s not exactly morning television language,” he said, “but here we go.” Reckon not. Light fare on the internet, though, where “testicular fortitude” doesn’t even merit an NSFW. Watch the clip below, via CNN:

Michelle Obama is a popular first lady. On average, her favorable ratings have been higher than those of her predecessors, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. This may well reflect the fact that more so than other first ladies, Mrs. Obama has a stand-alone personal image. Unlike other recent first ladies, her popularity has not fallen or risen with her husband’s. How popular is Michelle? A steady two-thirds of the public has held a favorable view of Mrs. Obama, according to nationwide Gallup poll and Pew Research Center surveys, for most of her time as first lady. At 69 percent, her average

RALEIGH, N.C. — Most evenings, Sean Haugh is a pizza deliveryman. But every other week or so, the Libertarian Party’s Senate nominee in North Carolina opens a few craft beers on the counter of the bar in his campaign manager’s basement. He takes deep gulps from a pint glass bearing an image of Austrian-school economist Murray Rothbard and expresses his Everyman frustrations with the current political system into a video camera. So far, Haugh’s campaign barely exists anywhere but on YouTube. But it is doing surprisingly well in a high-stakes Senate contest in which candidates and outside groups have already

So much has been happening in the Middle East that the huge diplomatic effort now under way to settle the confrontation over Iran’s nuclear ambitions risks falling off the radar. But a new round of talks in Vienna began last week and the clock is ticking on a deadline of July 20 for signing a comprehensive agreement that would resolve the issue once and for all. First, the good news: the US and Iran are talking with such regularity and on matters of such substance that their meetings have ceased to be noteworthy. Sarah Palin’s reality show Amazing America just got picked up for a second season by the Sportsman Channel and to mark the occasion, the former Republican governor and vice presidential candidate spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s first season and her future ambitions, including a possible spot on ABC’s The View. With Barbara Walters’ semi-retirement underway and the pending departures of Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy, The View is actively looking for new co-hosts. And as Palin revealed in Monday’s interview, she’s actively interested. All reporter Marisa Guthrie had to do was ask Palin if she was generally

Border guards in Texas are on high alert after two child immigrants were confirmed to have swine flu following their interception trying to cross the border from Mexico. The minors were diagnosed with the highly-contagious H1N1 virus on Friday at two separate military detention facilities in Brownsville, Texas. Both centres, at Brownsville and nearby Fort Brown, were today on lockdown as border officials scrambled to contain a potential outbreak, placing some 120 people who came in contact with the juveniles in isolation. It comes days after Texas officials renewed demands that the federal government take further steps to secure the

A federal appeals court might be on the verge of blowing a massive hole in the foundation of Obamacare. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit is expected to rule any day now in a lawsuit that aims to block the law´s insurance subsidies in more than half the country. If the challengers ultimately prevail, the Affordable Care Act´s complex framework could begin to unravel as millions of people lose financial assistance. For now, the stakes are a lot higher than the odds of success—challenges to the insurance subsidies have a 0-2 record in federal courts. But the pending D.C.

Why Does Obama Want

As his policies, foreign and domestic, are collapsing on pretty much every front, President Obama has increasingly sought refuge in talk about global warming. He wants the U.S. to reduce its emissions of carbon dioxide, and the EPA has done its best to bring this about via increasingly stringent regulations on coal-fired power plants. The Democrats wanted to enact cap-and-trade, but couldn’t get it through Congress, so Obama is doing the best he can through administrative action. Simultaneously, the administration has poured billions of dollars into specious “green” energy projects, many of which can’t be kept alive even with lavish

By all rights, the GOP should easily pick up the North Carolina Senate seat currently held by Kay Hagan. (Snip)"Four polls lately put his support somewhere between 8 and 11 percent — not enough to suggest a realistic possibility of winning, but conceivably enough to affect the outcome of the race. The same surveys show the margin between incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan and her GOP challenger, state House Speaker Thom Tillis, at six points or less."

Thomas Piketty’s Capitalism in the Twenty-First Century has reached the New York Times’ bestseller list for the past 10 weeks — it was first in nonfiction shortly ago and near the top for the last few weeks. For an academic book consisting mostly of statistics, this is remarkable, though, having read it, I think it is likely to chiefly end up sitting on many bookshelves perhaps briefly browsed but largely unread. Its market popularity undoubtedly derives from Piketty’s denunciation of what he claims to be the growing inequality in Western nations, especially in the United States. Piketty is an

BILLINGS, Mont. – Coal industry representatives say lawsuits against mines in three Western states could have consequences across the U.S. as environmentalists seek changes in how mining is approved on federally owned reserves. In civil cases unfolding in Colorado, New Mexico and Montana, the group WildEarth Guardians asserts coal companies benefited from lax oversight by federal regulators. The group says the U.S. Department of Interior approved mining plans without enough public involvement, and gave little heed to the pollution caused by digging, shipping and burning coal. The group asked the courts to stop mining until the plans are re-done. The

Not all of the tens of thousands of border rushers flooding the U.S. sleep with teddybears; not many of them would stand in awe at the appearance of border greeter Nancy Pelosi, and some would never be mollified by the lollipops distributed by Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. Here they come, America: Bloodthirsty MS-13 members and jihadists rushing the border, having posed as innocent children. It’s the cowardly way out for authorities like Murrieta City Manager Rick Dudley to describe the queue jumpers as little children desperate to be reunited with parents and relatives in the U.S., when flooding the same unsecured

Anthony Cumia gets attacked all the time: Most often for telling the truth about black crime and violence that is stratospherically out of proportion. And how reporters condone it. On Thursday night, July 3, his bosses at Sirius XM radio fired him for it. “The decision was made, and Cumia informed, late Thursday, July 3, after careful consideration of his racially charged and hate-filled remarks on social media,” said the suits at Sirius. “Those remarks and postings are abhorrent to SiriusXM, and his behavior is wholly inconsistent with what SiriusXM represents.” Cumia was typically defiant: “Sirius decided to cave and fire me,” he

The San José Mine is situated inside a round, rocky, and lifeless mountain in the Atacama Desert, in Chile. Once every dozen years or so, a storm system sweeps across the desert, dropping a torrent of rain. When that happens, the dust turns to mud as thick as freshly poured concrete. Charles Darwin briefly passed through this corner of the Atacama in 1835. In his journal, he described the desert as “a barrier far worse than the most turbulent ocean.” In the deeper desert, miners are the only conspicuous living presence; they ride in trucks and buses to the mountains, which

ONE small consolation of our high-priced health care system — our $2.7 trillion collective medical bill — has been the notion that at least we get medical attention quickly. Americans look down on national health systems like Canada’s and Britain’s because of their notorious waiting lists. In recent weeks, the Veterans Affairs hospitals have been pilloried for long patient wait times, with top officials losing their jobs. Yet there is emerging evidence that lengthy waits to get a doctor’s appointment have become the norm in many parts of American medicine, particularly for general doctors but also for specialists. And that includes patients
