More than 60 women and girls abducted in April by suspected Boko Haram militants in northeast Nigeria have escaped their captors, sources have told the AFP new agency. Local vigilante Abbas Gava said he had “received an alert from my colleagues ... that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home.” A high-level security source in the Borno state capital Maiduguri, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed the escape. Gava, a senior official of the local vigilantes in Borno State who are working closely with security officials, told journalists the women escaped when their

The al Qaeda offshoot terrorist group conquering parts of Iraq is gaining strength thanks to prisoner releases and its social media magnetism for foreign fighter recruits. As its ranks grow, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, sometimes called the Islamic State, has become the first terrorist organization to plan and execute a two-front land war, presenting yet another challenge to the United States in its long war against Islamic extremists. Last week, ISIL showed it could capture towns and territory in Syria and Iraq at once. Al Qaeda and its franchises have not accomplished such a feat. ISIL has demonstrated that it is an organized

Addressing the ongoing immigration crisis involving tens of thousands of undocumented women and children who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border, Republican Congressman Raul Labrador said Sunday that what this administration needs to do is clear: “deport these families, these children.” [Snip] Appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Senator Lindsey Graham echoed his Republican colleague saying, “We have to send them back, because if you don’t you’re going to incentivize people throughout that part of the world to keep sending their children here.” Graham also added, “This is a specific problem created by an impression that if you get to America

Lawyers for Guantanamo Bay detainees have filed motions asking U.S. courts to stop officials from barring the inmates from participating in communal prayers during Ramadan, claiming their rights are protected under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and citing the recent Supreme Court Hobby Lobby ruling in their defense, reports Al Jazeera America. U.K.-based human rights group Reprieve filed the motions on behalf of Emad Hassan of Yemen and Ahmed Rabbani of Pakistan, whom the group says requested the intervention after Guantanamo Bay military officials, “prevented them from praying communally during

The defunct Occupy Wall Street´s legacy, in part, was bringing the term "one percent" into the lexicon. The term targeted the rich, who apparently weren´t paying their fair share to society. Gene Simmons begs to differ. In fact, the Kiss mainstay and proud one percenter says the country would be in shambles without that unfairly maligned group. [Snip] What’s it like being part of the 1 percent? “It’s fantastic!” he replied. “The 1 percent pays 80 percent of all taxes. Fifty percent of the population of the U.S. pays no taxes. The Australian Government has ignored calls from the opposition and human rights groups who say they fear for the lives of 41 asylum seekers who were turned around and sent back to Sri Lanka on Sunday. Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has received a lashing for his handling of the issue from all sides of government, including former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser who said the return of asylum seekers at sea was similar to how Jews were treated by the Nazis back in the 1930s. The news has also outraged Labor frontbencher Penny Wong who has hit out at Mr Morrison´s ´brief

Greg Wodack, the owner and operator of Elite Shooting Sports LLC, and his team broke ground on the location just off of Interstate 66 in Gainesville, Virginia, in April and have been working at a breakneck pace to open on schedule in October. The facility will house two 25-yard ranges, a 50-yard range and a 100-yard range, a 1,600-square-foot, two-story live-fire shoot

The gun-control group founded by former New York mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I) on Monday will begin surveying all federal candidates in the 2014 midterm elections on gun issues as it tries to become a political counterweight to the National Rifle Association. This is the first big step by Bloomberg — who has committed to spending $50 million of his personal fortune this year to build a national grass-roots movement that will pressure lawmakers to pass more restrictive gun laws — to devise a political strategy heading into the November elections. Amid calls for expanding the nation´s temporary skilled worker program, some Americans are pushing back. They argue the so-called H-1B program has been hijacked by staffing companies that import cheaper, lower-level workers to replace more expensive U.S. employees. Lawsuits have cropped up around the country. And some tech worker groups are calling for a boycott of firms that they say are ignoring qualified U.S. workers. The emergence of the highly-secretive Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi from the shadow of Iraq’s sectarian crisis put a face to the threat of a global Islamic caliphate. The Islamic State leader spoke publicly for the first time at Mosul’s Great Mosque of Friday, an intervention in which he called on the world’s Muslims to “obey” him as “the leader who presides over you”. But the self-anointed ‘Caliph Ibrahim’ also brought a touch of branding into the bloody conflict, with many who have seen the 20-minute sermon commenting on his bulky and expensive wristwatch.

Former Rep. Todd Tiahrt is a man on a mission — to reclaim the Republican Party for earmarkers. Tiahrt represented Kansas´ 4th district for 16 years, and for 14 of those years he sat on the House Appropriations Committee. From that perch, Tiahrt was a prolific porker, dealing out earmarks as if they were playing cards. In 2010, when Sen. Sam Brownback stepped down to run for Governor, Tiahrt ran for the open Senate seat but lost the GOP primary to his House colleague Jerry Moran. Lawyer and businessman Mike Pompeo took Tiahrt's place. Now, Tiahrt wants his seat back and is challenging Pompeo in the 2014

At the eleven minute mark of this 15 minute interview, Kansas Senator Pat Roberts is reduced to a stumbling, bumbling pile of a 47 years in Washington incumbent who can´t manage to coherently explain why he doesn´t actually live in Kansas anymore. And perhaps the worst of it is when he admits that he does click his heels together to go back to Kansas on occasion .... seemingly only when he gets an opponent. Roberts may not have distinguished himself as that much of a wizard in D.C. over the years but if a slot opens up in Oz, perhaps Dorothy will consider him as a write in after hearing this embarrassing performance.

It is especially unusual since the pupil in question has actually had a constitutional law degree conferred upon him by an esteemed Ivy League institution and lectured on constitutional law at an equally esteemed institution of higher learning.
