Cairo - An Egyptian court has sentenced the Muslim Brotherhood leader, Mohamed Badie, and 36 other Islamists to life in prison, and confirmed death sentences for 10 others, most of them on the run. Badie – convicted of involvement in deadly protests – had already received death sentences in two other cases in a crackdown on Islamist opposition after last year´s military overthrow of Mohamed Morsi. Of the 10 defendants condemned to death last month in the same case, whose sentences were confirmed, an Islamic cleric has since been arrested. Another defendant was sentenced to three years. Egyptian courts have sparked international

The Declaration of Independence is the birth certificate of the American nation—the first public document ever to use the name "the United States of America"—and has been fundamental to American history longer than any other text. It enshrined what came to be seen as the most succinct and memorable statement of the ideals on which the U.S. was founded: the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; the consent of the governed; and resistance to tyranny. But the Declaration´s influence wasn´t limited to the American colonies of the late 18th century. No American document has had a greater impact

President Barack Obama is fond of describing the deep inequality afflicting American society. And then he goes off to play golf. He´s getting near the 200-round mark for his entire presidency, a sporting feat perhaps worthy of Teddy Roosevelt for its sheer audacity. Golf is the most unequal sport in America, demanding expensive fees or country club memberships. Yet if the president plays it so often, golf must be inherently patriotic--right? So, while visiting Chicago, in the Fourth of July spirit, I recovered an old set of clubs from my parents´ garage and headed to the local nine-hole. My brother

DAYTON — Security will increase at a Dayton store where the owner fatally shot a teenager who, along with another suspect, was allegedly trying to rob the business at gunpoint Monday. The death of Isiah Haggins Jr., 16, of Trotwood, was officially ruled a homicide by the Montgomery County Coroner´s Office. The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds. Dayton police said the teen and another suspect entered the Step-N-Style store at 3217 W. Siebenthaler Ave. armed with guns and demanded cash. The store owner, who´s been robbed before, also had a gun and shot Haggins. The second suspect fled

It wasn’t exactly a reprise of the photo of Farmer-Laborite Gov. Floyd B. Olson speaking to thousands in Powderhorn Park that helped to spark Ed Felien’s idea, but his attempt to organize a Minneapolis version of London’s famed Speakers’ Corner at least drew a few curious onlookers on Friday. Felien’s open invitation to Minneapolitans to gather in the park for some old-fashioned July 4 oratory drew a score of speakers, and an audience that topped at 22, many of them those same speakers. This being Minneapolis, and more specifically the Powderhorn neighborhood, the politics ran from left to lefter.

A key federal agency, ICE, begins the process of naturalizing the illegal alien flow into the U.S. Controlling the verbiage and words is a key element in deceiving the public, and keeping the electorate unaware of what is actually going on. In the foreground we will continue to see President Obama and fellow travelers say they are opposed to the influx and committed to stopping it. However, in the background they are giving specific instructions to the federal agencies to continue promoting the process and affirming the intent. In essence they are doing the exact opposite of what they are

No so. Here you see the same response from uber-liberal Chicago’s South Side. But that doesn’t fit the Pravda narrative, so you probably won’t see Anderson Cooper or Rachel Maddow calling Chicagoans “bigots” or “racists”. TRENTON — Do you approve of the job President Obama is doing? Obama captured 58 percent of the vote in New Jersey when he was re-elected in 2012. But a Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press poll released this week showed about 51 percent of New Jersey voters disapprove of Obama´s performance, while 45 percent approve of his work. That´s a 4 percentage-point drop since April, when 49 percent approved and 47 percent disapproved. Pollsters say Obama´s Affordable Care Act — his controversial overhaul of the U.S. health care system — and his handling of U.S. involvement in Iraq appear to have

HOUSTON — Rocky Carroll was inside his cluttered boot shop here on Tuesday, watching television as the dusty ceiling fan jangled. Dolly Parton’s white boots were behind him. President George W. Bush’s cigar-color alligator boots were by the front door, next to President Ronald Reagan’s Italian calf. A fly swatter was within reach. Then Mr. Carroll heard the bad news: Gov. Rick Perry had recently announced that he had given up on cowboy boots. The governor, who had appeared on the cover of Newsweek in 2010 with boots emblazoned with the Texas battle cry “come and take it,” said he had

With the newest border crisis focusing on the influx of immigrants from Central America, many of them children, the political punching bag that is immigration reform is again leading the news. Democrats, incongruously, claim that the obvious ineffectiveness of our border is proof that we need to reform immigration laws to allow current foreigners who are here illegally to stay. How this stops the flow rather than increase it is not explained. Many Republicans have taken up the cause of amnesty by raising the curious proposition that many of those currently here illegally may eventually join the ranks of the

A Taliban bomb attack on the outskirts of Kabul set ablaze 200 fuel trucks that the militants claimed were supplying foreign troops in Afghanistan, officials said. The tankers were set on fire as they sat in a parking lot waiting to enter the Afghan capital, which is currently gripped by a fraud dispute over presidential elections in June. Taliban insurgents fighting a 13-year-war against US-led forces in Afghanistan often attack western supply convoys and claimed responsibility for the late Friday night attack. Television footage showed black smoke billowing above the site of the attack, with the charred wreckage of dozens of trucks

That fits with his current economic interests: banning coal-fired power plants will boost the value of his solar projects. But it was not always thus. There were farmers and businessmen, doctors and lawyers, ministers and a kite-flying scientist. Those early patriots may have come from different backgrounds and different walks of life. There’s nothing like the Fourth of July, a day to bask in America’s glory and to dream of better days ahead. That’s part of the genius of the Declaration of Independence. It isn´t just about what America was. It’s a vision of what she could be, of what we should always strive for. A land where the people rule, and where the common man or woman can advance themselves and the common good. [Snip] America’s greatness has always been rooted in our creative minds and entrepreneurial spirit, our ability to make things ... to make the most of our resources, to control our economic destiny. To get them released, Scudder submitted a request under the Freedom of Information Act — a step that any citizen can take, but one that is highly unusual for

Pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine have fled their eastern stronghold of Sloviansk amid an offensive by the military, rebel sources say. President Petro Poroshenko has ordered the military to hoist the Ukrainian flag over the city council building. Sloviansk´s rebel mayor said fighters had left, with reports saying they had headed towards the town of Kramatorsk. Ukrainian forces launched an offensive against the separatists this week after a 10-day ceasefire broke down. The BBC´s David Stern in Kiev says the military´s capture of Sloviansk - where the eastern insurgency began in April - will be a major victory for the government.

Dr. Ben Carson once made the observation that “political correctness” acts as a “muzzle” to quell legitimate dissent against the status quo. That is undoubtedly a true statement. But to drive in the stakes and build our intellectual ramparts on this point is little more than ceding coveted ground in an argument against a completely unfounded doctrine that presents falsehoods as facts. There is a more fundamental observation upon which we can mount our legitimate defense against the doctrine of “political correctness,” and it lies in the simplest inspection of the phrase “politically correct.” Inherent in those two words’ juxtaposition is
