Madness on the border
Washington Times, by Editorial    Original Article

The spirit of independence is alive in Murrieta, Calif., where townspeople heard that the federal government was about to send 170 illegal-alien children flooding across the border to their town in Riverside County. Three hundred residents stood in front of the buses, blocking the way. The federales withdrew, rerouting the buses to San Diego. But soon, the federales were on their way back. Allowing a crowd to block a public highway can’t be tolerated, but “the humanitarian crisis” on the border is the work of President Obama. The wishes of Murrieta are of no concern to this administration. No one can

After celebrating our Declaration of Independence from the British oppressor, we will return to work Monday having consumed 155 million hot dogs and, for some 41 million of us, bucked traffic jams, long security lines at airports, or storm-induced flight delays in order to visit family or whatever place attracts us in this huge country of ours. The weekend began on a high note after a modestly strong jobs report on Thursday. Non-farm payroll employment, the “jobs” in the “jobs report,” rose by 288,000 in June, and the figures for April and May were revised upward by 29,000 jobs. The

Hillary Clinton says she’s “deeply disturbed” by the Supreme Court decision this week to uphold Hobby Lobby’s rights under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Basically, the former first lady, senator and secretary of state is saying the court is letting bosses who oppose contraception impose their religious views on employees. Of course, it does nothing of the kind. For one thing, Hobby Lobby has no objection to — and continues to pay for — 16 forms of birth control. It’s just one reason The Washington Post gave Hillary “Two Pinocchios” for her claims. It helps to remember that the 1993 law that determined

The tragedy of the Arabs
The Economist, by Staff    Original Article

A THOUSAND years ago, the great cities of Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo took turns to race ahead of the Western world. Islam and innovation were twins. The various Arab caliphates were dynamic superpowers—beacons of learning, tolerance and trade. Yet today the Arabs are in a wretched state. Even as Asia, Latin America and Africa advance, the Middle East is held back by despotism and convulsed by war. Hopes soared three years ago, when a wave of unrest across the region led to the overthrow of four dictators—in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen—and to a clamour for change elsewhere, notably in Syria.

In an act of patriotism this Fourth of July, a pair of business executives has paid the fines for a Florida veteran who faced foreclosure for displaying a small American flag in a flower pot on his front stoop. The two senior executives for Los Angeles-based Lear Capital had read the story of 73-year-old Larry Murphree, of Jacksonville, whose homeowners association at Tides Condominium at Sweetwater began hitting him with fines of $100 a day last year for violating his homeowners association’s flag display rules, and have offered to pay the bill which has climbed into the thousands. “When we read his

WASHINGTON-- First ladies typically avoid getting into public scraps, but Michelle Obama has jumped into perhaps her biggest battle yet. She´s fighting a House Republican effort to soften a central part of her prized anti-childhood obesity campaign and she says she´s ready "to fight until the bitter end." Mrs. Obama even mocked the GOP effort in an opinion column and argued her case before her Twitter followers. "Remember a few years ago when Congress declared that the sauce on a slice of pizza should count as a vegetable in school lunches?" she wrote in The New York Times. "You don´t have to be

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Which of those solemn promises has Barack H. Obama not betrayed? I can’t think of a single one. If Obama is different from other presidents, it’s not for the color of his skin, which is just a PR hustle to blackmail suckers into proving they aren’t racists. No: Obama will be historic for his fanatical leftism, which has no precedent in American history. The biggest headline

Who needs Fourth of July fireworks when you have Joan Rivers around? The comedian known for her lack of self-censoring recently officiated a same-sex wedding and was asked by a photographer if she believed the United States would ever see the first gay or female president. Her response was typical Rivers. "We already have it with Obama, so let´s just calm down," she said. "You know Michelle (Obama) is a trans." When asked to further explain Rivers said, "A transgender. We all know it." A representative for Rivers released the following statement to CNN from the comic about her remarks to the photographer:

The walls seem to be closing in on the Obama presidency. Iraq and Syria are overrun with terrorists. Violence is flaring in Ukraine and on Israel’s borders. A humanitarian crisis is developing on our own southern border, but immigration legislation, like most all legislation, is moribund. Probes of the veterans’ health-care system, the IRS and Benghazi are sucking up attention and the administration’s time. After making fighting income inequality an early focus of his second term, President Obama has largely abandoned talk of the subject this election year in a move that highlights the emerging debate within the Democratic Party over economic populism and its limits. During the first half of this year, Obama shifted from income inequality to the more politically palatable theme of lifting the middle class, focusing on issues such as the minimum wage and the gender pay gap that are thought to resonate with a broader group of voters. The pivot is striking for a president who identified inequality as

Egypt will start raising petrol prices by up to 78% from midnight on Friday, an oil ministry source told Reuters, as it tries to cut energy subsidies to ease the burden on its swelling budget deficit. "The increase will start being implemented by midnight," the source said. Food and energy subsidies traditionally eat up a quarter of state spending and the government is taking steps to reform its subsidy programme and revive an economy that has been battered by more than three years of political turmoil. The source said the price of 92-octane petrol would be 2.60 Egyptian pounds (21p) a litre, up 40% from its current price of 1.85 pounds,

The left-wing online publication Vox finds the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the Hobby Lobby case to be part of a “deeper trend” in a nation that has made an “unprecedented” turn to a pro-life stance. Writing at Vox, Sarah Kliff notes that, since 2010, “states have moved aggressively to restrict access to abortion and taken new steps to defund family planning programs. Advocates on both sides of the issue describe the wave of changes as unprecedented.” Also affirming the success of the pro-life movement is Elizabeth Nash of the pro-choice Guttmacher Institute. “Abortion access has changed dramatically,” said Nash,
