The Day Lou Gehrig Delivered
Baseball’s Gettysburg Address

Two years before his death, an ailing Lou Gehrig stood in a packed Yankee Stadium and proclaimed himself ‘the luckiest man on the face of the earth.’ Ray Robinson was born in 1920 and during his childhood lived on the corner of 115th Street and Broadway across the street from Columbia University. When he was 3 or 4 years old, his father took him to watch the Columbia baseball team play, specifically to watch a young man named Lou Gehrig. Robinson was too young to remember anything specific about “Columbia Lou,” but he still recalls the idea of Gehrig, that he

A lot of the folktales we were told as children involved starving peasant children begging for scraps of bread. [SNIP] It is a region that is troubling the world needlessly when you consider the big picture. The Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region has 500 million Arabs, Persians, North Africans and others living in an area with an agricultural system that can support half that number. The region as a whole has a population doubling time of 34 years. While they are being fed, they breed. All that does is increase the number of people who ultimately will be dying of

Political courage these days is generally defined as a politician doing something that might make it harder to get re-elected. Real civic leadership has always been about convincing people to do what’s right and hard rather than what’s popular and easy. Courage is part of that. People are less likely to follow a leader who asks them to sacrifice and struggle when he or she will not. But now, that sacrifice generally refers to a politician having to spend more of other peoples’ money on a primary election contest or, in rare cases, moving to a lucrative career in punditry or influence

According to an author I´ve never heard of who wrote a book I´ve never read, there are 3 types of dog intelligence: Adaptive Intelligence (learning and problem-solving ability), Instinctive Intelligence and Working/Obedience Intelligence. That being said, if you believe 60-year-old, Wesley Mark Terrell, then his dog was the president of the brand new Mensa canine chapter. On Wednesday in Oconee County, Georgia, police responded to a call reporting a dog locked in a car at a Bell´s food store on a day when the temperature outside reached 99 degrees. Sheriff Sgt. Partain was first on scene and measured the internal

A local Japanese legislator has become an Internet darling after an overwrought, sob-filled apology to his constituents over potential corruption was posted online. Forty-year-old Prefectural Assemblyman Ryutaro Nonomura, who represents the southwestern prefect of Hyogo, was accused of spending more time in Japanese famed hot springs than serving his constituents. According to Kobe Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper, Nonomura escaped to the hot springs 106 times during 2013. His trips were paid for by public funds, but not illegal; the Sydney Morning Herald notes that Nonomura spent three million yen on visits to a preferred resort in the hot springs in

Justice is blind, and for about 10 minutes Wednesday she couldn´t hear or speak either. Ahmed Abu Khattala, alleged mastermind of the Benghazi attacks, took his place at the defense table for his detention hearing and put on his headset. But as soon as proceedings began, the accused terrorist let it be known that he wasn´t hearing the English-to-Arabic translation. "One, two, one, two," attempted the interpreter, who sat at a table behind Abu Khattala´s. "Are you speaking English?" the public defender, Michelle Peterson, asked the interpreter. "I´m speaking Arabic," the interpreter answered, in English. A clerk walked over to investigate. Magistrate Judge Deborah Robinson´s face tightened

But this is the Great Female Hope of the Democratic Establishment, so nary a peep from mainstream media. Still and all, it is disturbning. Americans hardly need an excuse to display the flag, but few occasions bring the red, white and blue out in fuller force than our national birthday. Jeane Kirkpatrick once said, “Americans need to face the truth about themselves, no matter how pleasant it is.” The truth is that the United States is an exceptional nation: It’s the world’s oldest and most stable capitalist democracy, older even than Great Britain, which did not become a mass democracy until the late 19th century. It’s the first nation founded in an act of rebellion against a colonial power. It’s the first nation founded

Imagine a Fourth of July tradition like Hollywood´s where each year the Oscars pay homage to fallen stars. Liberty-loving Americans would fete public servants who’ve honored Thomas Jefferson’s rule to "leave no authority existing not responsible to the people." Might celebrating trustworthy public stewards inspire Americans to rediscover our founders’ insights, ingraining a culture that prizes democratic accountability and lawful government, the one that transformed our risky political experiment into history’s freest and most prosperous society? We´d be celebrating two recently passed stalwarts who put country and constitutional order before party: Sen. Howard Baker, the Watergate committee´s ranking Republican who famously

Nowhere in the Declaration of Independence does the historic document call itself the Declaration of Independence. No matter. The 1,317 words in this enduring and then-revolutionary statement of principles and universal human rights were largely written by Thomas Jefferson between June 8 and June 28, 1776. [Snip] No surprise, the 33-year-old lawyer had a reputation as an intellectual, a skilled writer, multilingual speaker and staunch democrat. Indeed, it was Jefferson as POTUS No. 3 who introduced the political handshake as a gesture of equality among American citizens. The revered Gen. Washington deemed such common contact beneath the office.

“Let me be absolutely clear: I do not doubt that Wheaton genuinely believes that signing the self-certification form is contrary to its religious beliefs. But thinking one’s religious beliefs are substantially burdened — no matter how sincere or genuine that belief may be — does not make it so.” Those words from Justice Sotomayor will, we predict, go down as among the most notorious ever to issue from the high bench. She is dissenting from a temporary injunction issued by the Supreme Court to protect the rights of Wheaton College under the First Amendment. What the justice is saying

So much for secular stagnation. Thanks to the headline figures and revisions for previous months contained in the Labor Department’s jobs report for June, which was released a day early because of the July 4th holiday, we know that, since the end of March, the economy has generated more than a quarter of a million jobs a month. For June, the payroll figure was 288,000, well above economists’ expectations. During the past three months, the unemployment rate has fallen from 6.7 per cent to 6.1 per cent, and it’s now at its lowest level since Lehman Brothers collapsed in the fall

HOUSTON, Texas--The federal government has launched a campaign targeted at Central Americans to deter the wave of illegal immigrants from making the trek north and crossing into the United States. Newly released television ads warn of the dangers that come with illegal immigration. The commcerials feature a young migrant, saying goodbye to his mother and father before making the journey north. He finds himself embarking on a much more dangerous trip than he had bargained for.

Andrew Breitbart famously said, "more voices, not less." Reuters blogger Jim Gaines says, essentially, "shut up." Gaines´ new Reuters column doesn´t just review the new docudrama America from the team behind 2016: Obama´s America. He implores readers not to see the film at all. Gaines´ column kicks off with this headline: "To celebrate the Fourth of July, don’t go see this movie." What follows is a clumsy assault on the arguments raised throughout the film. Nothing wrong with that. If Gaines wants to critique a film and miss so many of its points, be our guest. That´s not his mission.

A family’s livestock enterprise in New Mexico is in danger of being completely shut down now that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has declared the meadow jumping mouse to be an endangered species, Watchdog reports. The new regulations came into effect from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last month, and as a result, the U.S. Forest Service is considering installing 8-foot high fences to protect the mouse, which would permanently prevent the Lucero family’s livestock from grazing. The family is already in possession of grazing permits from the federal government, but the permits become irrelevant in the event that a

An EU official told the newspaper that Brussels was seeking more information on the nature of the tax deal that had been struck between Luxembourg and Amazon. The move could lead to a full-blown investigation into the retailer´s European tax arrangements. The online retail giant has joined a growing

Tribune-Review owner and philanthropist Richard Mellon Scaife, whose vision and funding reinvigorated conservative politics in America, died Friday, July 4, in his home. His death came just one day after his 82nd birthday. Many of the nation´s leading conservatives considered him to be the man who sustained the Republican Party after its crushing defeat in the 1964 presidential election and the Watergate scandal in 1972. His support for and promotion of a conservative agenda led to Ronald Reagan´s election as president in 1980 and the nation´s turn toward the principles those two men shared. Only days after Patrick Moore, the disillusioned co-founder of Greenpeace, said the green movement has become a "combination of extreme political ideology and religious fundamentalism rolled into one," Greenpeace seems determined to prove Moore was right. The group has launched a fun-sucking, fundamentalist attack on the toy company Lego, claiming "Shell is using Lego to clean up its image for dirty oil drilling" in the Arctic. Greenpeace, like an environmental Bible-thumper, demands, "Lego, how will you rebuild what Shell destroys?" In fact all Lego has done is agree a deal in which the Anglo-Dutch petroleum giant gives away Shell-branded Lego

The American Revolution, meanwhile, was famously fermented by brewers such as Samuel Adams. So to honor Independence Day, we compiled a list of the 10 most patriotic beers in Boston.
